Rebirth of the Useless Young Master’s Counterattack Chapter 54

Chapter 54: Another Business Opportunity

Mu Lichuan considered himself low-key and hadn’t done anything outrageous at school. So why did some government officials know he was a "superstitious practitioner"? Someone was definitely targeting him.

"Please watch your tone." Mu Lichuan's voice was soft, but an icy aura radiated from him.

Perhaps his face was too deceiving, many people underestimated him. But it also gave him a certain advantage in misleading others.

"I can sue you for slander!" Before the man could respond, Mu Lichuan emphasized coldly.

Qi Wei and the others shrank back, afraid of provoking Young Master Mu. After witnessing his abilities, they knew people like him were eccentric and hard to deal with.

Yuan Dacheng wiped sweat from his forehead and hurriedly said, "The bribery has nothing to do with Young Master Mu. I’ll cooperate, but why trouble a middle school student?" His words carried a clear warning.

The anti-corruption officers were intimidated by Mu Lichuan’s sharp gaze. They had assumed he was just a delusional kid, but now they realized this young master was not to be trifled with. "Since he’s just a student, there’s no need to involve him." They quickly backed down.

Mu Lichuan wanted to know why they recognized him. If this wasn’t resolved, more trouble would follow. "Why do you know who I am?"

Even though Master Zhang had invited him before, he hadn’t done anything noteworthy, just destroyed a tree. He thought those people were a disorganized mess, lacking even basic unity. Of course, if their organization grew too powerful, the government would never allow such a group to operate outside their control.

"We all have pamphlets warning against superstition, and you’re listed as a ‘misguided youth who returned to the right path.’" The man explained, feeling his authority crumbling before a teenager.

Mu Lichuan almost laughed. "The propaganda department did this?" He found it strange that someone would use him this way. Becoming "famous" like this was never his intention.

"Not sure." The previously arrogant officer now spoke meekly, surprising his colleagues.

Mu Lichuan nodded and let them leave. Yuan Dacheng’s construction site issue was resolved, and whether he bribed officials was none of his concern. As for whoever was using his name, he’d track them down eventually.

Yuan Chengzhi, worried about his father, was restless but still respectfully escorted Mu Lichuan out. The payment would be transferred once his father was released.

Mu Lichuan found his soul power incredibly convenient. An ordinary feng shui master would need many tools and time to dismantle a Yin Sha Array, but he could do it instantly. The downside? His mental energy was nearly drained. Unless necessary, he wouldn’t push himself like this again.

"Let’s check the old courtyard." Hands in his pockets, Mu Lichuan spoke to Xiao Mo.

He still didn’t know where the spirit in his spiritual sea came from or why it sought its body. But one thing was certain - he knew many secrets and possessed treasures. Without it, he’d have been stuck as a "useless waste" after rebirth.

What was happening with the Mu family now? And what about Chuan City? He hadn’t inquired, afraid of drawing attention. If people connected him to the Mu family of Chuan City, things could get complicated.

The courtyard looked unchanged from the outside, its gates tightly shut. Mu Lichuan frowned, unsure whether to climb the wall. But then he sensed eyes on him, someone was watching this place. The moment anything happened, the police would arrive.

Mu Lichuan lowered his head, waiting for the watcher to reveal themselves, then quickly grabbed him as he peeked out. "Who are you? What’s your goal?" He doubted anyone would tail him personally, unless they wanted to use him against Master Zhang’s group.

"Kid, what goal could I have? Let go first!" The man, clearly a hired thug, was the one who had called the police.

Mu Lichuan sneered. "Fine, I’ll hand you over to the police." Some people only learned through suffering.

"Wait! I-I was just told to watch this place and report if anyone gathered here. That’s all!" The middle-aged man stammered, shocked by the boy’s strength.

Knowing he wouldn’t get more info, Mu Lichuan let him go. Glancing at the locked gates one last time, he turned and left.

At the same time, a woman spat out blood - a backlash from her spell. Her face paled as someone rushed to support her.

The woman, beautiful with tightly pressed red lips, had thoroughly researched the occult forces in the capital. Given the target’s connections, he shouldn’t have been able to hire a hidden expert. So who ruined her array?

"Miss Chen, are you alright?" The man assisting her looked worried.

"The array was destroyed by a formidable method. Investigate who did this," Miss Chen said coldly.

The man froze. "How… how is that possible? The array shouldn’t be breakable!"

"Are you questioning me?" Her gaze turned piercing. "Tell your boss this land is lost. Find out what expert has appeared in the capital."

"N-No, of course not!" The man bowed his head. This master was introduced by the old man, her name was Chen Ying. He had coveted the land but lost it to Yuan Dacheng’s schemes. Resentful, he lied to Chen Ying, claiming the old man wanted it for its auspicious feng shui.

Everything had been going smoothly, Yuan Dacheng was on the verge of collapse. But now, even Chen Ying was powerless. His revenge would have to wait.

The capital’s waters ran deep. He had acted only after confirming Yuan Dacheng had no mystical support. Now, he’d have to retreat and investigate before making another move.

Chen Ying was stunned to learn a teenager had dismantled the array, as she'd instructed against any rash actions. With her foundation damaged, she needed time to recover.

Unaware of these events, Mu Lichuan continued attending school, training his body, and absorbing trace spiritual energy to break through to Qi Refining’s second layer.

Yuan Dacheng’s case wasn’t major by the capital’s standards, but certain interested parties took note, especially of the rising star behind the resolution.

Yuan Dacheng had a friend, Lao He, whose recent project faced inexplicable disasters. He had been too preoccupied with his own troubles earlier, but now he called to lend a hand.

"Lao He, heard you’ve hit some snags?" Having once doubted mysticism himself, Yuan Dacheng now believed.

"Don’t ask. The project’s cursed, even my daughter got into a car accident." Exhaustion laced He Chen’s voice.

"Did you consult anyone about it?" Unlike Yuan Dacheng's single plot, He Chen was developing an entire mountain into luxury villas.

"I did, I paid a feng shui master over ten million for a half-month of 'adjustments,' but saw no improvement. As a man of science, I find it hard to accept, but something definitely feels off." He Chen sounded defeated. Since taking the project, everything went wrong, even his wife fell down the stairs and was hospitalized. His family was crumbling.

Yuan Dacheng sighed. "Lao He, at first I was skeptical too. My son’s classmate introduced a young master to me, and the problem solved instantly. Want me to arrange a meeting?"

After a pause, He Chen decided, "Do it!" At worst, he’d be scammed again.

When Mu Lichuan returned home, a luxury car waited outside. Qi Wei greeted him with flattery. "Young Master Mu, brought you another client!"

"Sure you’re not a pimp?" Mu Lichuan teased him.

"Hey, I know you’re the real deal!" Qi Wei grinned.

Mu Lichuan was pleased with the power of faith he’d accumulated. Glancing at the new client, he smirked. "Him? His troubles are practically glowing." The man’s forehead was darker than any he’d seen, this would be interesting.

The Sweet little Fulang Chapter 173

Chapter 173

Lu Gu was overjoyed. Last night before falling asleep, he had been thinking that Shen Xuanqing should be returning soon. Though Shen Xuanqing had taken eight days' worth of dry rations, but as a skilled hunter, he wouldn't go hungry in the mountains. Catching pheasants or rabbits was no trouble at all. Yet Lu Gu couldn’t help but worry.

He hurried outside and had just reached the main hall when he saw Guaizi charging in through the courtyard gate, followed by the equally excited Dabai. For a moment, the big and small dogs were barking together, and even Zhao’er was babbling excitedly. Having grown up around the family’s dogs and hearing their barks daily since birth, the child showed no fear.

Guaizi wagged his tail so vigorously, his whole rear seemed to sway, whining and pressing insistently against Lu Gu for attention. After running and jumping around to release his excitement, he even rolled onto his back, exposing his belly, hoping for a rub.

Dahui and Dahei also crowded close, nudging for head pats. With two hands barely enough to manage them all, Lu Gu finally freed himself from the pack’s enthusiastic greeting. Just as he stepped off the eaves’ stairs, Shen Xuanqing walked through the gate.

"You're back," Lu Gu said, eyes brimming with happiness. After eight days apart, it would be a lie to pretend he hadn’t missed him.

The moment Shen Xuanqing saw his fulang, a bright smile spread across his handsome face. "I'm back," he replied.

Strapped to Lu Gu’s back, Zhao'er waved his little hands and babbled. Shen Xuanqing led a male sika deer and a black-hoofed goat toward the backyard, his bamboo basket looking heavily laden. Noticing Ji Qiuyue’s absence, he asked, "Where’s Sister-in-law?"

"Sister-in-law and Mother are working in the fields. I stayed home with Zhao’er to cook and boil water," Lu Gu answered cheerfully.

The antlers of the sika deer were strikingly large and beautiful, leaving Lu Gu in awe. Too cautious to handle the deer, he reached for the rope tied to the black-hoofed goat, but Shen Xuanqing avoided his hand.

"You’re carrying Zhao’er and pregnant. This goat’s temper isn’t great, let me handle it. It’s just a few steps anyway," Shen Xuanqing said with a smile, tugging the two animals along as Lu Gu followed.

After the long trek down the mountain, Shen Xuanqing was exhausted. Once he tied up the goat and deer and set down the bamboo basket, he let out a relieved sigh, rubbing his shoulders. Seeing Lu Gu trailing after him eagerly, he couldn’t help but laugh. "In spring, most female game are either pregnant or nursing, so I had to target males."

Having spent eight days in the wilderness, he had managed to stay clean earlier in the trip to avoid alerting prey with his scent. But last night, too tired to bother, he had only given his face a cursory wash. After today’s long journey, his clothes and hair were filthy. While alone in the mountains, it hadn’t bothered him, but now, face-to-face with Lu Gu, he longed to embrace him—yet the stench of sweat and grime made him restrain himself.

Overcome with happiness, Lu Gu stood grinning foolishly at Shen Xuanqing for a while before remembering to fetch water. He hurried toward the water vat, asking, "Are you hungry? There are steamed buns in the steamer, still soft from lunch. I’ve already chopped the spring vegetables, I’ll stir-fry them now."

Seeing his haste, Shen Xuanqing’s brow twitched in concern. "Slow down, no rush. I ate the last two dry buns on the way back, I’m not that hungry yet."

Only then did Lu Gu ease his steps. After ladling water and bringing wild soapberries, he also filled the dogs’ water bowl to quench their thirst. He didn’t know why, but today he couldn’t tear his eyes away from Shen Xuanqing, his heart was simply too full of joy.

Once Shen Xuanqing washed his hands, he noticed Lu Gu still carrying Zhao’er and offered, "Let me hold him, give yourself a break."

But then, glancing at his soiled sleeves and clothes, he hesitated. The baby was dressed cleanly. "Let me change my outer garment first. Wait a moment."

Lu Gu followed him into the bedroom, still beaming, with Zhao'er strapped to his back.

After days apart, Zhao’er was unfamiliar with Shen Xuanqing’s hold. He let out a few cries, stretching his arms toward Lu Gu.

Back when they were all at home, Ji Qiuyue or Wei Lanxiang usually handled the baby, Shen Xuanqing had only held him briefly to play. He had no experience soothing a truly upset child. No matter how he rocked or teased, Zhao’er refused to look at him, tears streaming down his cheeks - a far cry from his usual fake wails. Flustered, Shen Xuanqing suggested, "Maybe you should hold him. I’ll cook instead."

Handing the crying child back, he watched as Lu Gu patted Zhao’er’s back, murmuring soothing sounds. Remembering that Shen Xuanqing had cooked a few times in the mountains, Lu Gu nodded. "The vegetables are already chopped, just stir-fry them in the wok."

They headed to the thatched kitchen. Guaizi, Dahui, and Dahei sprawled panting in the main room, exhausted from their earlier run.

Though Zhao’er had grown accustomed to being carried by Lu Gu these past two days, he continued to fuss. Shen Xuanqing placed the wok on the clay stove while Lu Gu, cradling the baby anxiously, finally managed to calm him—only for Zhao’er to start sucking his thumb.

Realizing the child was hungry, Lu Gu said, "Zhao’er needs milk. Sister-in-law must’ve been delayed in the fields, I’ll go find her."

Leaving Shen Xuanqing to fend for himself, Lu Gu hurried toward the back gate with Zhao’er. Halfway there, he spotted Ji Qiuyue returning with a water jug and sighed in relief.

"Erqing’s back," Ji Qiuyue said as she approached, her eyes widening at the sight of the two hunted animals. Settling into a chair under the rear eaves, she unbuttoned her top to nurse.

"I’m back, Sister-in-law," Shen Xuanqing replied with a smile, keeping his gaze averted as he waited for the oil in the wok to heat.

With nothing else to do, Lu Gu took over the cooking.

Soon, Shen Xuanqing sat in the main room eating his meal. The soft steamed buns were far better than the dried-out ones, and the stir-fried vegetables were rich with oil. As he ate, Lu Gu peeled a boiled egg for him.

The eggs had been cooked before dawn - ten in total. Everyone else had eaten two, but Lu Gu, finding the taste slightly off, had only had one. Shen Xuanqing’s return was timely - had he been any later, the egg would’ve gone to Shen Yan by dinner.

Though cooled by the heat of the day, Shen Xuanqing didn’t mind.

"Have they eaten yet?" Lu Gu asked, noticing Guaizi still lying motionless on the ground, clearly worn out.

"They have," Shen Xuanqing said between bites. "Caught a rabbit on the way, didn’t even need skinning. They tore it apart and devoured it. We can feed them properly later."

Reassured, Lu Gu sat contentedly beside him, watching with quiet delight. When Ji Qiuyue finished nursing, he brought her a chair.

"Sister-in-law, want some?" Lu Gu nudged the bun basket toward her.

"No, I drank plenty of water, I’m full for now. I’ll eat after work." Ji Qiuyue played with Zhao’er a while longer before handing him back to Lu Gu. Grabbing the refilled jug, she returned to the fields, telling Shen Xuanqing to rest, the mountain trek was no small feat.

Despite her words, after eating, Shen Xuanqing and Lu Gu still headed to the fields.

Wei Lanxiang, overjoyed to see her second son, called out despite being covered in mud and sweat, urging him to go rest. Ji Qiuyue had already whispered about the sika deer - announcing it loudly would seem like boasting. Privately, Wei Lanxiang swelled with pride, feeling that her son truly was remarkable.

Shen Xuanqing had initially planned to help in the fields despite his grimy state, but one look at Lu Gu’s shining eyes changed his mind. He was already home, half a day’s delay wouldn’t matter. Tomorrow morning would be soon enough.

Back home, before sunset, Shen Xuanqing heated water for a thorough wash, emerging refreshed and invigorated.

Lu Gu, tired from carrying Zhao’er all day, felt the fatigue of pregnancy more keenly now. Though he ate well, his energy wasn’t what it used to be. He settled Zhao’er into the wooden cradle in the west room.

Since Ji Qiuyue and Shen Yaoqing now slept there, the cradle had been moved too. Zhao’er, no longer the tiny newborn he once was, needed the crib to prevent rolling off the bed at night.

When Shen Xuanqing entered, the light in Lu Gu’s eyes brightened unmistakably. Shen Xuanqing, equally pleased, met his gaze with a smile that reached his star-bright eyes.

My Fulang is a Delicate Flower Chapter 21 Part 1

Chapter 21

Ji Taoyu saw his father’s strong reaction, and his heart skipped a beat. But he honestly didn’t deny it, nodding lightly.

Ji Yangzong widened his eyes: "The villagers privately told me this man is hard to get along with, not only does he not greet others when coming and going, but he barely responds even when others greet him. How come he’s gone out of his way to look after you so many times? Could it be this fellow…"

"Dad, can you stop jumping to conclusions? Just because a man talks to me, you assume he has ulterior motives."

Ji Taoyu quickly cut him off: "It’s ridiculous, making it seem like I’m some kind of heavenly treasure."

Ji Yangzong scowled at Ji Taoyu, his brow furrowed in displeasure: "You’re still young, a little ger who doesn’t understand anything."

Then he tapped Ji Taoyu’s hand lightly: "Besides, my ger is a treasure."

Ji Yangzong continued: "Today at the city gathering, the village head of Hongli Village asked about you, saying their second son is now of marriageable age."

"I’ve met the second son of Village Head Zhou. Though not as handsome as that little bastard from the You family, his features are decent. I’ve come to realize that while scholars are good, their pride is too high for ordinary families like ours to handle. It’s better to find someone steady and reliable."

"That second son of the Zhou family is hardworking and dependable. He’s already dug his own fishpond to raise shrimp and fish, making good money. It’s not a bad choice…"

Ji Taoyu, seeing his father ramble on endlessly - even more than his mother, turned away before he could finish: "I don’t understand anything, I’m going back to grind medicine."

"Ah, Dad knows you’re still upset about You Erlang, but life must go on, right?"

Ji Yangzong watched as his ger walked away without looking back and quickly stood up to follow: "Alright, alright, if you’re unwilling, we won’t rush. We’ll take our time, okay? Don’t be mad at Dad, or your mother will scold me again…"

The next day, Ji Taoyu woke up early, unlike his despondent self from the past few days.

He packed all the finished frostbite ointment into bottles and placed them in a box, telling Ji Yangzong and Huang Manjing that he was going to the city to sell his goods.

In the tenth month, Ji Yangzong was busy collecting taxes and had been worried about not having time to comfort Ji Taoyu. Seeing him willing to go out on his own, he felt much more at ease.

Naturally, he didn’t stop him from going to the city. Instead, he even took out some loose silver for Ji Taoyu to buy food or something fun in the city.

"Your grandfather still doesn’t know about the broken engagement. Since you’re going, you can inform him first."

After speaking, Ji Yangzong couldn’t help but sigh: "When he’s free, he’ll surely come to the village."

Huang Manjing picked up some food and placed it in Ji Yangzong’s bowl: "This isn’t your fault. Weren’t you just thinking of what was best for Xiao Taozi from the start?"

Ji Taoyu, biting into a steamed bun, sensed his father’s worry about being scolded by his grandfather.

He raised his face and whispered: "Is Dad also afraid of his father-in-law?"

"You don’t understand anything, yet you dare laugh at your dad." Ji Yangzong pinched Ji Taoyu’s cheek and took the steamed bun from his hand: "Eat less. Save some stomach space for wontons at the city’s breakfast stalls. Don’t you like those?"

Huang Manjing slapped Ji Yangzong’s hand: "What kind of father stops his child from eating their fill?"

Ji Yangzong chuckled, dispelling the gloom that had hung over the family these past few days. He put down his chopsticks and stood up: "Alright, I need to hurry and collect taxes early."

As he draped his outer robe over his shoulders, he added: "Xiao Taozi, if you plan to stay at your grandfather’s house tonight, send word back first."

Ji Taoyu also set down his chopsticks: "Got it."

Ji Yangzong left first, and soon after, Ji Taoyu picked up a small box, ready to leave as well.

Huang Manjing had originally wanted Ji Taoyu to take some cured meat to his grandfather, but considering he was already carrying a box and would struggle with the extra weight, she gave up.

Instead, she straightened his cloak, her heart aching as she looked at his thinner face: "Go, have fun."

"Mm."

Ji Taoyu walked through the morning mist with his small box. Before even reaching the village entrance, he spotted a man leading a horse slowly along the main road.

The majestic black horse followed its master at a leisurely pace, occasionally lowering its head to nibble at the few remaining green blades of grass that had managed to  survive the withering effects of autumn.

Huo Shu didn’t call out to the ger. He stopped, waiting for him to approach, then took the small box from his hands when no one was around.

He then mounted the horse: "I’ll wait at the village entrance."

With that, he rode off.

Ji Taoyu rubbed the back of his hand, reddened by the chilly late-autumn wind from carrying the box, and quickened his pace toward the village entrance.

Like last time, one rode a horse while the other took an ox cart, entering the city one after the other.

By the time they reached the city, the mist was still thick. Ji Taoyu lifted his hood and looked around but couldn’t spot Huo Shu in the fog.

Just as he wondered where to find him, a familiar voice came from behind: "Here."

Ji Taoyu saw the man holding the box alone and sighed in relief: "Where’s the horse?"

Huo Shu replied: "Took it to the stable."

Ji Taoyu nodded and reached for his small box: "Let’s sell my ointment first."

Huo Shu walked beside Ji Taoyu, glancing at the box: "What kind of ointment?"

"Frostbite ointment."

The Rebirth of Crazy ger Chapter 52 Part 2

Wang Jin had always enjoyed others’ envy—in his past life, he especially reveled in their admiration of his wealth.

When it came to material possessions, he could generously share them, even giving things away. But Yuan Heng was different. Yuan Heng was one of a kind.

Just like Yuan Heng’s possessiveness, Wang Jin felt the same, that man belonged only to him. Not a single strand of Yuan Heng’s hair could be given to anyone else.

Annoyed, Wang Jin rapped his knuckles on the table and said sternly, “What are you thinking? Brother Heng is already taken!”

“……” The group fell silent, clearly not expecting Wang Jin to react so sharply. Of course, every ger present knew Yuan Heng was taken, their words were just innocent admiration, with no ill intent.

But judging by Wang Jin’s expression, he seemed deeply displeased, as if he’d misunderstood them…

Well then…

So these two are equally possessive of each other!

Awkward, one ger coughed and changed the subject. “Actually… the leader isn’t bad either, right?”

The others quickly took the bait.

“Of course not! He’s the leader, how could he be lacking?”

“Yue ger is lucky to be with the leader.”

“He really is. Let’s just hope he cherishes it.” Suddenly, a voice cut in from behind the group. They turned to see Xi ger.

Dark circles hung under his eyes, as if he hadn’t slept all night, making him look haggard.

“A-Jin, I need to talk to you.”

The others quickly gathered their things and tactfully left.

Mu ger also moved to leave, but Xi ger shook his head, signaling for him to stay.

Mu ger and Wang Jin exchanged puzzled glances.

Xi ger poured himself a cup of water, drank it, and took a moment to compose himself before speaking calmly. “A-Yue… is married now. Do you think his feelings for the leader are genuine?”

“……” Wang Jin and Mu ger froze, neither speaking, but Xi ger seemed to understand their silence.

He smiled bitterly. “So you both know already.”

Mu ger, as if finally making up his mind, turned to Wang Jin and said, “A-Jin, I’ve been meaning to tell you...last night, Yue ger was acting really strange. Even though marriage is a good thing, and now that he has a beastman, he might not dare openly pursue Brother Heng… but as the leader’s ger, he holds influence in the tribe. If he still hasn’t given up, or if he targets you…”

“Exactly. That’s what I’m worried about too.” Xi ger picked up where Mu ger left off. “A-Yue…”

Calling his friend’s name softly, Xi ger shook his head wearily. “He seems different now. I can’t say for sure if he’ll do anything, but A-Jin, you need to be careful. You must guard against him.”

Wang Jin nodded. “I know.”

That person had already made his hostility clear, of course Wang Jin would be on guard.

Xi ger continued, “Master is getting older, and his movements are slower now. He needs constant care, so I won’t be coming around much these days…”

Wang Jin paused. So Xi ger was trying to distance himself from both him and Yue ger…

He didn’t need to say it, Xi ger and Yue ger had been close friends. Now, caught in this situation, Xi ger probably wanted to intervene but didn’t know how… so he chose to retreat instead.

Wang Jin didn’t approve of Xi ger’s avoidance, but he understood.

After all, Xi ger had shared a deep bond with Yue ger. The fact that he had come to warn Wang Jin showed that his sense of right and wrong was intact, he was just too emotionally attached to act decisively.

Mu ger frowned, about to say something to Xi ger, but Wang Jin grabbed his wrist to stop him. Instead, he forced a smile and said, “Alright.”

If Xi ger didn’t want to confront Yue ger, then staying away was better than not.

Xi ger’s expression relaxed, as if a heavy weight had been lifted. He gave Wang Jin a grateful look. “If you ever need anything, you can always come to me.”

“Okay.” Wang Jin smiled faintly. With that, Xi ger didn’t linger and left.

Mu ger gripped Wang Jin’s hand. “A-Jin, Xi ger and Yue ger are friends, maybe he could talk some sense into Yue ger. Why did you let him walk away? We should’ve convinced him to stand with us, to make him see that Yue ger is in the wrong and get him to persuade Yue ger to let go. If Yue ger can just live peacefully, we won’t have any problems.”

Wang Jin pressed his lips together. “Xi ger looked so troubled. If he could’ve persuaded Yue ger, he would’ve done it by now.”

Muttering under his breath, he added, “Besides, what’s there to fear? It’s not like Yue ger can actually eat me.”

Mu ger didn’t catch Wang Jin’s earlier mumble, only hearing his bold declaration, and sighed in exasperation.

Wang Jin was good in many ways, but sometimes he was too trusting. Yue ger was clearly scheming, once he started playing dirty, it’d be hard to guard against.

Just as Mu ger was about to speak, a voice called out from the courtyard gate.

“Who’s trying to eat A-Jin?”

The two looked over to see none other than Yue ger himself, leading a group of gers straight toward them.

The Sweet little Fulang Chapter 172 Part 2

Just as he was lost in thought, Ji Qiuyue arrived with Zhao’er on her back. Not seeing Lu Gu in the front yard, she noticed the oil-paper packet on the chair - candied haitang fruits. She popped one into her mouth and, upon entering, found Lu Gu trimming chives.

"Craving chives?" she asked with a smile.

Lu Gu snapped out of his thoughts. Turning, he saw Zhao’er’s little face peeking over Ji Qiuyue’s shoulder and smiled. "Yan Yan said she wanted chive-and-egg dumplings tonight, so I’m prepping the vegetables while it’s still early."

"Dumplings sound good," Ji Qiuyue said. "Let’s make extra for tomorrow morning, we can reheat them for breakfast. Much better than dry buns."

Lu Gu nodded. "I cut plenty, it’ll be enough."

Seeing the generous amount of chives in the basket, Ji Qiuyue agreed. Rolling up her sleeves, she said, "I’ll go knead the dough first."

The two divided the work smoothly, both accustomed to labor. By the time Shen Yan returned from the fields, they were indeed eating dumplings.

During the busy farming season, even feeding the dogs could be neglected - sometimes, even people missed meals. With so many animals at home, it was good Lu Gu was there. Before leaving for the mountains, Shen Xuanqing had specifically reminded the family not to let him transplant seedlings, the work was too strenuous. So he stayed home to tend the livestock, feed the dogs, and cook.

Zhao’er sometimes slept in a little later in the mornings. Waking such a small child could lead to endless crying. Last night, thinking that the new house was closer to the paddy fields - making meals and rest more convenient without crossing the entire village, even Shen Yaoqing and Ji Qiuyue had stayed there with the child, locking the old house’s gate.

Early in the morning, Wei Lanxiang and Shen Yaoqing didn’t have time to feed the animals. After a quick breakfast, they hurried to the fields with Shen Yan, leaving Lu Gu and Ji Qiuyue to manage things at home.

Zhao’er had woken up crying because the adults weren’t around. The backyard was large and far away, Ji Qiuyue had been chopping grass for the chickens and ducks and hadn’t heard him at first. It was only when Dabai and the pups started barking that she noticed and rushed over.

With her gone, Lu Gu who had just finished watering the cows and sheep squatted to chop the chicken grass. The pig feed was still boiling in the pot, but since Ji Qiuyue had gone to the front, she would tend the fire.

After soothing Zhao’er and feeding him, Ji Qiuyue carried the pig feed to the back while holding the baby.

By the time they finished, a good while had passed. When things weren’t busy, Shen Yaoqing shoveled manure daily. But during these hectic days, priorities shifted - manure could wait until after the fieldwork. Lu Gu, now pregnant, retched at the smell in the rabbit hutches, so Ji Qiuyue took over to feed them instead.

With Zhao’er no longer crying and content after feeding, he only needed to be carried. Spring plowing was important, and Ji Qiuyue was anxious about the fieldwork. Locking the gate and leaving the three dogs to guard the house, she and Lu Gu went to check on the paddy fields. It was still early, Shen Yaoqing had taken an earthenware jug of water when he left, and it probably wasn’t empty yet, so they didn’t bring more.

Along the way, every family was busy in their paddies. Men, women, and shuang’ers had to take off their shoes and roll up their pants to wade in. The life of farmers was like that, when fieldwork demanded it, no one cared whether girls or shuang’ers were married. With mud clinging to legs and feet, only lecherous idlers would stare.

The paddies were muddy, so they didn’t enter. Ji Qiuyue stood at the edge and called, "Mom, is there still enough water?"

Wei Lanxiang straightened up and shouted back, "Plenty! No need to bring more yet. It’s slippery here, you two go back."

With a full eight mu of paddy fields, Lin Jinhu and his brother, as well as He Zhi’s family, had to tend their own land first before coming to help. Standing there, Ji Qiuyue thought it over. Since she was here anyway, and Zhao’er was familiar with Lu Gu, she turned to him and said, "Guzi, why don’t you take Zhao’er back? He’s full and won’t fuss much. Just bring water later."

Shen Yan was only thirteen, she couldn’t work as hard as an adult. Lu Gu agreed. These two days were crucial, fieldwork took priority. He carried Zhao’er back to boil water.

A large earthen pot sat on the clay stove, kept warm with kindling. Even in hot weather, drinking unboiled water wasn’t good for people.

Lu Gu reached back with his right hand to steady Zhao’er’s legs before carefully bending to add a stick of firewood to the stove. As he straightened, a chubby little hand pressed against his neck, tiny fingers wiggling mischievously.

Zhao’er’s nails were short, but they still pinched a little. Thankfully, he soon switched to grabbing Lu Gu’s collar, amusing himself quietly. He was a well-behaved child, at least he didn’t cry or fuss when separated from his mother.

Lu Gu patted him gently with the hand supporting his back. With things less hectic now, he dug up a spring vegetable from the garden. Hard work made people hungry, chopping the vegetables early meant they could cook soon. The steamed buns were ready, and warming them up would keep them soft. They’d brought the cooking ladle yesterday, once they said they were hungry, a quick stir-fry would be ready in no time.

With a baby on his back, Lu Gu moved more carefully - squatting or standing, he took care not to jostle Zhao’er.

After chopping the spring vegetables, he sliced a piece of pork. Stir-fried together, these would make a hearty dish. During busy farming seasons, meat kept people strong and satisfied. As he pondered what else to cook, he suddenly remembered Ji Qiuyue’s reminder and quickly unwrapped Zhao’er to hold him over the ground to pee. The baby squirmed and whined, refusing to go, but after some coaxing and soft whistles, he finally relieved himself. Otherwise, if he wet his clothes, they’d both have to change.

With no time to gather toon shoots or wild vegetables from the mountains these past two days, Lu Gu cut a handful of chives from the garden after securing Zhao’er on his back again. Stir-fried chives with steamed buns made a tasty meal too.

The whole family was busy, with some working in the fields and others handling tasks inside the house. Though the first day of spring plowing was exhausting, no one minded. Only by transplanting seedlings now could they harvest rice in autumn.

The next afternoon, as Lu Gu prepared dinner with Zhao’er on his back, he suddenly heard Dabai bark, followed by several more barks outside. His heart leapt - Shen Xuanqing was back.

My Fulang is a Delicate Flower Chapter 20 Part 3

Huo Shu, seeing Ji Taoyu enjoy the pastry, took one too: “Didn’t you say no proper job means no good match?”

“Huh?”

Ji Taoyu’s frown eased into a smile. All those careful notes on matchmaking criteria from village wives and fulangs hadn’t gone to waste: “Brother Huo takes advice so well, you’ll surely find a good match.”

He blinked, whispering: “When you find someone you like, I’ll ask Mother to speak for you. She still has some influence.”

Huo Shu found his earnest enthusiasm amusing, as if pulling strings was a point of pride.

He didn’t argue, just nodded: “Mn.”

“What kind of work are you thinking of?”

Huo Shu said: “What do you think suits me?”

Ji Taoyu pondered: “With your skills, you’ve got options. Hunter and butcher  would work. Or find something in town.”

“But I’m no expert. Best ask my father.”

Huo Shu almost said your father’s not that reliable either, picking a fiance like that for you, but held back. No need to offend him now. He just nodded.

They ate the pastries in silence, yet it didn’t feel awkward.

Huo Shu sipped his tea: “I’m going to town tomorrow. Want to come?”

“To see Third Sister Wu?”

“Mn.”

Ji Taoyu chewed the pastry, then shook his head: “I’ll pass.”

Huo Shu’s brow twitched imperceptibly.

After a pause, he urged: “Come. It’ll cheer you up.”

Ji Taoyu felt a peculiar warmth at Huo Shu’s concern.

Even someone he’d just met cared, while the person he’d grown up with had agreed to break the engagement without a word and disappeared.

All those years of childhood friendship, perhaps they meant nothing compared to fame, fortune, and beauty.

No wonder he’d been so disheartened.

Since childhood, he’d been told to uphold propriety, that he’d marry into a scholarly family, that he’d wed You Lingxiao.

He'd grown accustomed to the idea, never questioning whether he even liked You Lingxiao - it was just fate.

Then, in an instant, everything he’d believed was overturned. The shock had been overwhelming.

Not just the collapse of his beliefs, but You Lingxiao’s sudden change, or perhaps his true nature which was hidden until now.

The abrupt shift, the shattered future his parents had painted, it had all crushed him.

Ji Taoyu looked at Huo Shu, who was watching him too. He set down the pastry, unable to meet his gaze: “I… I’m not sad anymore. No need to cheer up.”

“If you’re not sad, then come.”

Huo Shu paused, then added: “I should bring something for Changsui’s son. I don’t know what to buy.”

Ji Taoyu pouted. So that was the real reason.

Still, he hesitated, because going shopping with Huo Shu seemed improper. But then he remembered, he was no longer engaged. He was free.

While Tongzhou valued propriety, it wasn’t so strict as to forbid respectable interactions between unmarried men and women.

As long as they weren’t alone in a room doing something scandalous, it was fine.

Considering Huo Shu’s kindness, he relented: “Alright.”

Huo Shu’s brow smoothed at Ji Taoyu’s agreement.

“Sorry for the wait.”

Ji Yangzong returned after dealing with the villagers. A few families with good harvests had delivered their grain and taxes early, easing his burden.

Every year, collecting taxes from dozens of families was a hassle. Those who paid voluntarily were a blessing.

At least his efforts for the village paid off.

“I asked you to serve Brother Huo, but you ended up eating yourself.”

Ji Yangzong entered to find his ger at the table, snacking on pastries and tea, utterly at ease, even unafraid of Huo Shu’s grim demeanor.

Ji Taoyu smiled sheepishly and stood, nudging his father into the seat while he stood dutifully beside him.

Ji Yangzong sat and asked: “What did you need, Huo-lang?”

Huo Shu stated his purpose.

“Looking for work? That’s good.”

Ji Yangzong nodded approvingly. He’d worried about idle youths causing trouble. If everyone had jobs, the village would be more peaceful.

Someone as imposing as Huo Shu could intimidate the villagers, especially women and children. If he caused trouble, no one could stop him.

It was perfect that he came looking for honest work. Even if he hadn't shown up, Ji Yangzong would have eventually asked Yuan Huiru to persuade him. Now, that effort was spared.

“Our village butcher, Master Qiao, was looking for apprentices recently but hasn’t found the right ones. If you don’t mind hard work, I’ll take you to see if it suits you.”

Huo Shu glanced at Ji Taoyu, who widened his eyes and nodded encouragingly. He said: “Fine.”

Ji Yangzong, pleased Huo Shu wasn’t picky, took a sip of tea.

It was refreshing to meet a man who wasn't pretentious.

“Don’t underestimate butchery. It’s lucrative. Every butcher I know lives well.”

Huo Shu said: “Thank you, Village Head.”

“No trouble. If I can help fellow villagers, I will. The rest is up to you.”

Ji Yangzong said: “Master Qiao’s out butchering for someone these days. Once he’s back, I’ll introduce you.”

“Alright.”

With that settled, Huo Shu glanced at Ji Taoyu, then stood to leave.

“This guy doesn’t seem to know how to chat. Says his piece and leaves.”

Ji Yangzong saw him out, then grumbled upon returning.

Ji Taoyu pressed his lips. Huo Shu didn’t seem that taciturn to him.

Odd, really.

“Wait, I just saw Huo Shu holding a black cloak. Looked familiar.”

Ji Yangzong suddenly remembered something and stopped Ji Taoyu: “Wasn’t that cloak in your room before?”

Before Ji Taoyu could answer, Ji Yangzong realized: “So it was him who brought you home the other day!”

The Rebirth of Crazy ger Chapter 52 Part 1

Chapter 52

Mu ger’s heart skipped a beat, and he felt a pang of worry, would Yue ger suddenly change his mind and refuse to marry after all?

They had already paid respects to the Beast God…

Mu ger nervously watched Yue ger, seeming even more anxious than Wang Jin that the marriage might not go through.

Fortunately, after a short while, Yue ger turned his face back, his expression full of tenderness.

“It’s just that I didn’t get along with A-Jin before, so I wanted to invite him to come along and improve our relationship.”

He made no mention of his earlier insistence on having Yuan Heng accompany them, only bringing up Wang Jin, and the leader actually believed him.

“My A-Yue is so kind-hearted. Even after that lunatic treated you so poorly, you still care so much.”

“What a shame, they…” Yue ger cast a disappointed glance inside, and the leader followed his gaze. The entangled figures naturally didn’t escape his notice. He paused slightly and coughed awkwardly.

“In that case, let’s go back.” The leader reached out his hand to Yue ger, and Mu ger’s heart seemed to leap into his throat.

Take it, take it!

Mu ger screamed inwardly. As if hearing his plea, Yue ger placed his hand in the leader’s palm and let himself be led away from the courtyard.

Before leaving, Yue ger turned to glance at Mu ger. Her gaze as cold and calculating as a venomous scorpion lurking in the shadows, sizing up its prey.

Mu ger’s momentarily eased heart clenched again, the brief relief now feeling like a cruel illusion.

He had a strong premonition: even though Yue ger had successfully left with the leader, he wouldn’t let Brother Heng go.

Compared to before, Yue ger was even more terrifying now. No one could guess his thoughts, and the speed at which his expressions changed was startling.

Mu ger followed them out of the courtyard, reunited with Lai Yuan, and then found an excuse to slip back home.
____

The next day.

Yuan Heng left early in the morning. With Xi ger absent, the other gers, as usual, gathered at Wang Jin’s place.

Truthfully, Wang Jin wasn’t teaching much anymore, and they no longer bothered him. Sometimes a dozen or so gers would weave together, occasionally discussing clothing styles or cosmetics, and sometimes gossiping - it had become their daily routine.

When Yuan Heng went hunting, Wang Jin found it quite dull, so having them around was a good thing.

Yesterday, after Yue ger’s marriage ceremony, he had distributed fresh meat and fruits, earning everyone’s goodwill. Today, those present couldn’t stop praising Yue ger.

They even complimented the leader’s good judgment, with those who had seen the fireflies last night saying how deeply in love the leader and Yue ger seemed.

Hearing this, Wang Jin felt slightly relieved and chimed in, “At least he’s settled now. Being with the leader is good.”

The other gers chuckled, and one ger replied, “Now you can relax, Jin ger. Yue ger won’t be pining for your Brother Heng anymore.”

The group burst into friendly laughter. Wang Jin’s ears burned, but he stubbornly retorted, “Of course I’m relaxed. Even if he hadn’t found someone, Brother Heng wouldn’t have been swayed.”

The ger who had accompanied Yue ger to Wang Jin’s courtyard last night nodded emphatically. One of them added, “That’s true. You wouldn’t believe it.”

Leaning toward the uninformed ger, he continued, “Last night, Yue ger invited Brother Heng and Jin ger to see the fireflies. When he got too close to Jin ger, Brother Heng actually got jealous of Yue ger!”

As if recalling something amusing, the ger laughed. “His expression looked like he was ready to duel Yue ger!”

“Good thing Yue ger has moved on. If he still liked Brother Heng, wouldn’t he be heartbroken?” another ger added, only to be lightly smacked by the person beside him. “Are you saying you’d actually feel bad for Yue ger if he still liked Brother Heng?”

The ger’s expression shifted, and he quickly shook his head. “I didn’t say that.”

Seeing the conversation take an awkward turn, another ger intervened, “Alright, enough nonsense. Both gers are taken now… these hypotheticals don’t matter.”

Don’t matter?

Mu ger glanced subtly at Wang Jin, hesitating as if he wanted to say something.

“Honestly, Brother Heng is such a good beastman in the tribe. He dotes on Jin ger so much, he even gets jealous if another ger gets too close!”

“Why the surprise? Don’t you remember? Even when we just cling to Jin ger a little, he gets possessive. Imagine how he felt last night when Yue ger was practically on top of Jin ger!”

The others nodded in agreement. One ger sighed, “Brother Heng is so adorable… He’s so fierce during hunts, always decisive in front of other beastmen, and commands so much respect in the tribe. He usually acts so gentlemanly and composed, who’d have thought he’d be so petty over his own ger?”

“You’re just realizing this now? Brother Heng has always been like this.”

“Wow, I’m so jealous of Jin ger. To have such a good beastman…”

The group cast envious looks at Wang Jin, whose lips twitched, his face darkening.

Rebirth of the Useless Young Master’s Counterattack Chapter 53 Part 2

The victim had taken safety measures, but for some reason, the steel bars suddenly snapped, costing him his life. The incident had been suppressed, but when another death occurred two days ago, it became impossible to cover up. The construction site had since shut down completely.

"I’m not a fortune-teller, and I don’t have that kind of ability." Mu Lichuan spoke indifferently after listening. He was certain something supernatural was at work.

Qi Wei nodded. "Yeah, we just want you to take a look. If you can’t solve it, we’ll have to abandon the project." This would bankrupt his buddy's family.

Mu Lichuan didn’t refuse. Since he wasn’t walking the righteous path, he might as well embrace the darker side. Not to mention, he had Yin-Yang Eyes, why waste them? Helping others earn gratitude points while making money was a win-win.

So Qi Wei happily introduced Mu Lichuan to his buddy’s father - a portly middle-aged man currently overwhelmed by the situation. When he saw it was just a teenager, he waved dismissively. "Qi Wei, are you messing with us?"

At first glance, Mu Lichuan noticed the man was shrouded in dark energy - a sign of impending disaster, possibly even imprisonment.

"If you don’t believe me, there’s no point continuing." Mu Lichuan turned to leave.

"Dad, Dad, let him take a look. You’ve already hired other masters, and they all failed…" Qi Wei’s buddy, Yuan Chengzhi, interjected quickly.

Yuan Dacheng found the boy’s face unconvincing, but his son had a point, they were out of options. He forced a smile. "Young Master Mu, my apologies for my ignorance. If you can resolve this, I’ll pay you five million."

Qi Wei’s eyes nearly popped out at the sum. No wonder Mu Lichuan lived so comfortably, this "profession" was ridiculously lucrative.

Mu Lichuan remained calm. "Let’s take a look first. Whether I can solve it depends on what I find."

They arrived at the construction site. The moment Mu Lichuan stepped in, he sensed a sinister, malicious energy - something was very wrong here.

"Someone set up an array here. You must have offended someone." Mu Lichuan knew business rivals were common, but his eyes detected faint, swirling energy encircling the area. Prolonged exposure would bring misfortune, and deaths here were no accident.

"Can you fix it, Master?" Yuan Dacheng’s eyes lit up. Though doubtful, he knew better than to probe too deeply into a master’s methods.

"It’s a feng shui array, and it hasn’t been here long. Otherwise, more than a few lives would’ve been lost." After listening to Xiao Mo’s words, Mu Lichuan explained, "Once we find the array’s core, we can break it." His tone was casual, but to Qi Wei and the others, it sounded profoundly mysterious.

A well-placed feng shui array could attract wealth and ensure safety, but the opposite was also true. To dismantle it, they needed to locate its core.

As they walked further in, Qi Wei shuddered. "Why does it feel so cold?" Despite the blazing sun, an eerie chill ran down his spine.

"That’s yin energy. Too much exposure isn’t good for you." Mu Lichuan’s ominous tone made Qi Wei shiver before realizing he was teasing him.

Though it was a joke, the others couldn’t shake their unease. When Mu Lichuan found the spot where yin energy converged most densely, he announced, "Found the core…"

"Do we need to prepare anything?" Yuan Dacheng wasn’t entirely clueless. He’d never believed in "superstition," but the incidents here were too bizarre. Previous masters had all claimed helplessness.

"No." Standing atop a high point, guided by Xiao Mo, Mu Lichuan channeled his soul power to destroy the four key points of the array. But the effort drained his spiritual energy, leaving him pale and drenched in sweat.

Despite the summer heat, Mu Lichuan had always remained cool—now, his sweating proved the exertion. The others didn’t dare disturb him, fearing unforeseen consequences.

After an unknown length of time, Mu Lichuan finally steadied himself. "It’s done."

Yuan Dacheng and the others stared in disbelief. They hadn’t expected the solution to be so simple, it felt anticlimactic.

"Thank you, Young Master Mu." Yuan Dacheng spoke half in gratitude, half in doubt.

Mu Lichuan looked at the man. "Don’t resume work yet. Let the sunlight purify the area first."

As they left the hillside construction site, anti-corruption officers arrived. "We suspect you of bribery. Come with us."

Mu Lichuan sighed. Yuan Dacheng looked embarrassed. "I’ll cooperate, but they have nothing to do with this."

"Everyone comes in for questioning! No excuses!" The officer glared at Mu Lichuan. "Isn’t this the superstitious lunatic?"

Rebirth of the Useless Young Master’s Counterattack Chapter 53 Part 1

Chapter 53: The Yin Sha Feng Shui Array

[阴煞风水阵 (Yīn Shà Fēngshuǐ Zhèn): lit. Yin Sha Feng Shui Array; fig. A type of hostile or malicious geomantic arrangement in Chinese metaphysics designed to attract negative energy and inflict harm, misfortune, or spiritual oppression on a target]

"Uncle, it really wasn’t me. Look at my thin arms and legs, how could I possibly push someone away?" Mu Lichuan wore a perfectly measured smile on his face.

Fortunately, Qi Wei, that idiot, hadn’t revealed his appearance, or things wouldn’t have been resolved so easily. At the same time, he knew someone must have deliberately led the police here.

He hadn’t offended anyone else, aside from the "Qingyun Ring" and the "evil object," both of which were related to Su Yun. Or perhaps it was the enemies of Master Zhang and his group.

The middle-aged policeman had only come to this place after receiving an anonymous tip. In his eyes, children were the future flowers of the nation and must not become swindlers—otherwise, it would bring no benefit to the country’s future.

Their generation was already like this, so they could only pin their hopes on the younger generation.

"You’re newcomers from Chuan City?" The middle-aged man held some documents in his hand. The capital had a large floating population, and this villa had often been the site of deaths. Now that all the trees had been cut down, the gloomy atmosphere was gone, and he felt much more comfortable.

In his opinion, the previous owner of the villa should have chopped down the trees long ago. Staying in a shady environment for too long could easily lead to depression and even suicide.

Rich people keeping mistresses, abandoning their wives and children, such things were common. If they couldn’t take it anymore, they might choose a tragic end.

"That’s right. We came from Chuan City. It’s just the two of us, grandfather and grandson, relying on each other. Grandpa is planning to contact a school to arrange my transfer." Mu Lichuan spoke with a "shy" expression, giving off an introverted vibe.

The capital had certain rules for schooling children of migrant populations—otherwise, they could only attend expensive private "aristocratic" schools. Judging by the young man’s appearance, he probably wasn’t short on money.

"If you encounter any superstitious organizations in the future, report them immediately. Don’t let yourself be fooled." The middle-aged policeman couldn’t do much to a minor. After offering this earnest advice, he left.

Mu Lichuan was currently at the first level of Qi Refining. Though he could barely sense spiritual energy, his body had undergone significant changes, making him acutely aware of how different he was from ordinary people. Even if he meditated all day, he’d still be full of energy the next morning.

"Money can make the devil turn the millstone, "Mu Lichuan directly enrolled as a transfer student at International Tianyuan School. As for Master Zhang and his group, they were probably still being "reformed"—otherwise, they would have come to see him by now.
[有钱能使鬼推磨 (yǒu qián néng shǐ guǐ tuī mò): lit. Money can make ghosts turn millstones; fig. Money can accomplish anything.]

Mu Lichuan had fair features, and the aura around him - something ordinary people lacked, made him very popular among the girls. Life in the capital gradually settled into a routine.

"Is Mu Lichuan here?" Mu Xiaoran was exercising when he saw a young boy peeking in cautiously before asking in a low voice.

"Lichuan, someone’s looking for you." The old man didn’t dwell on things anymore. He understood the exhaustion in his body, if he didn’t make further progress, he only had a year or two left.

He didn’t have any grand wishes now, only hoping his great-grandson could become self-sufficient so he could pass away in peace.

Mu Lichuan came out in sportswear. "What’s the matter?"

Qi Wei shuddered at his harmless appearance before saying, "Want to make some money?"

"Do I look like I need money?" Mu Lichuan let him in, then raised an eyebrow in question.

"Young Master Mu, I know you’re amazing, but please help my buddy out." Qi Wei scratched his head. He was treating this as a last resort, if the boy refused, there was nothing else he could do.

Mu Lichuan’s brow twitched slightly. "Tell me what’s going on?" Though he wasn’t interested in feng shui, he did like the power of faith, because it could save his life at critical moments.

As it turned out, Qi Wei’s buddy’s father was a construction contractor. After buying land, he naturally started building high-end residential complexes. But from the very first day, accidents kept happening - first minor injuries, then lost limbs, and finally, deaths.

Rebirth to Erase Dark History Chapter 58 Part 2

"Morning’s long gone. Go wash up. We missed the flag-raising today, but I’ll take you to the Forbidden City first, then explore some Beijing alleys. Brother Ren’s courtyard house is beautiful, we’ll visit sometime. Thanks to your cordyceps, Grandpa Ren’s cough is much better. He’s been wanting to meet you."

Yang Jiabo: "I brought another box this time, emptied my stock. Perfect for gifts."

Wei Jing: "I thought you were going to fleece the rich?"

Yang Jiabo: "Changed my mind. Figured clinging to a tycoon’s leg is more profitable."

Wei Jing: "Oh, Brother Ren said he’s treating you to dinner tonight. Anything specific you’d like?"

Yang Jiabo: "No, you guys decide."

That day, Wei Jing took Yang Jiabo sightseeing. At noon, they ate famous Beijing snacks at Wangfujing.

"Sightseeing is exhausting, my legs feel like noodles." Yang Jiabo stomped his sore feet.

Wei Jing: "You’re just out of shape."

Yang Jiabo: "I disagree, I get plenty of exercise."

Wei Jing glanced at his shoes. "Your shoes aren’t great for walking. Let’s buy you a pair."

Yang Jiabo looked down at his comfortable oxhide loafers but didn’t object. Wei Jing took him to buy branded hiking shoes. Once he changed, his feet felt much better.

"My outfit doesn’t match these shoes, it’s ruining my image." Yang Jiabo frowned at his casual clothes paired with hiking boots.

"Then let’s keep shopping." So Wei Jing took him to buy a new outfit.

Freshly dressed, Yang Jiabo felt much better. "This sightseeing trip turned into a shopping spree."

Wei Jing checked the time. "Took you long enough. Let’s meet up with Brother Ren."

"Feels like a waste buying these now." Yang Jiabo muttered.

"Not a waste. We’re hiking the Great Wall tomorrow." Wei Jing reminded him.

Ren Boying had reserved a private courtyard-turned-restaurant. Xu Chen, Meng Fan, and Chang Jin were all there.

Chang Jin asked immediately, "Jiabo, did you bring my flowers?"

Wei Jing cut in, "They’re at my grandpa’s place. Pick them up tomorrow."

"Perfect! I broke the old man’s flowerpot, he’s pissed. It’s just a pot, right?"

"Chang Five-Year-Old, is the plant okay?" Meng Fan asked.

"Probably still alive…?" Chang Jin sounded unsure.

"Chang Jin, where’s your girlfriend?" Yang Jiabo asked.

Chang Jin sighed dramatically. "She’s traveling with her family."

Xu Chen: "Jiabo, did you bring what I asked for?"

Yang Jiabo: "Everything’s in Wei Jing’s car, plus gifts for you all."

"Jiabo, what’d you get us?" Meng Fan asked curiously.

Yang Jiabo: "I foraged a lot of porcini mushrooms recently and dried them. Also, honey from my dad’s bees and my special eight-treasure fish. Nothing fancy, just a token of thanks."

Xu Chen: "Jiabo, you’re the best. Ever thought of opening a farmstead in Beijing?"

Yang Jiabo stared at him in surprise. Where did that come from? "No way. Beijing’s too big, I wouldn’t adjust. I like slow, easy living."

Xu Chen: "What a shame."

The dinner was lively among friends. Afterward, everyone dispersed. Ren Boying was busy, and Meng Fan, the lightweight, was drunk. Ren Boying helped him out, a routine everyone was used to.

Full and exhausted, Yang Jiabo didn’t want to move. Wei Jing’s car was parked far, so he waited roadside. Spotting Ren Boying’s familiar SUV, he went to say goodbye.

The interior light was on. Meng Fan was slumped in the passenger seat. Ren Boying leaned over to buckle his seatbelt—from Yang Jiabo’s angle, it looked like a kiss.

But Yang Jiabo saw clearly: Ren Boying did peck Meng Fan’s lips. Just a brush, but undeniable.

Eyes wide, Yang Jiabo froze. Ren Boying noticed him, smiled, and pressed a finger to his lips in a shh gesture before driving off.

"Jiabo, what’re you staring at? Get in." Wei Jing pulled up.

"Coming." Yang Jiabo got in. On the way back, he couldn’t resist asking, "Brother Ren and Meng Fan are really close, huh?"

"Yeah. Brother Ren’s the oldest among us, Meng Fan’s the youngest. The elders always had Brother Ren look after him, and it just… stuck."

Yang Jiabo thought it was like feeding a lamb to a wolf.

The next few days followed the same pattern: sightseeing with Wei Jing by day, dinners hosted by Meng Fan and the others by night. On Yang Jiabo’s fourth day in Beijing, Wei Jing finally took him to visit the Ren family.

Only Grandpa Ren and Ren Boying lived in the courtyard house, with a housekeeper and nurse tending to the elder. The place was impeccably maintained, exuding timeless elegance. Grandpa Ren, frail and less spirited than Wei Jing’s grandfather, chatted briefly with Yang Jiabo before retiring.

Ren Boying apologized, "Don’t mind him, Jiabo. Grandpa’s health has been declining."

"It’s fine. Mind if I look around?"

"Go ahead."

Just then, Wei Jing got a call, something at the company required his attention. He left Yang Jiabo with Ren Boying.

As they toured the courtyard, Ren Boying suddenly asked, "You saw it that day, didn’t you?"

Caught off guard, Yang Jiabo stammered, "S-saw what?"

"That kiss."

Yang Jiabo froze. "You… and Meng Fan are together?"

"No."

"Eh?!"

Ren Boying: "I’m the one with feelings. He’s still young, and I don’t want to drag him into this."

"But he seems to rely on you a lot?" Yang Jiabo recalled how Meng Fan always talked about Ren Boying.

"What about you and Wei Jing? You rely on him too, don’t you?"

Yang Jiabo said matter-of-factly, "We’re just good friends, brothers."

Ren Boying: "Really? Don’t you think your relationship’s unusually intimate? Beyond normal friendship?"

Yang Jiabo stood stunned, Ren Boying’s words echoing in his head.

Ren Boying sighed. "I didn’t mean anything by it."

"Oh." Yang Jiabo replied dumbly.

Even when Wei Jing returned to pick him up, he was still dazed. On the way back, he stole glances at Wei Jing’s profile. Objectively, Wei Jing was exceptional - handsome, composed, intelligent, from a good family.

Someone like him would inevitably marry a well-matched, accomplished woman once his career took off. The thought made Yang Jiabo’s chest tighten, as if he’d lost something precious.

Then Ren Boying's words replayed in his mind, and his face drained of color. Could he have fallen for Wei Jing without even realizing it? Panic took hold.

Back at Wei Jing’s apartment, Wei Jing noticed his distress. "Jiabo, what’s wrong? Are you sick?"

"I’m fine. Just homesick." Yang Jiabo deflected, then changed the subject. "Brother, did you date anyone while studying abroad?"

"No. Between school, starting a business, and worrying over a certain fool, I had no energy for girls." The answer inexplicably relieved Yang Jiabo. Wei Jing eyed him. "Why the sudden question?"

"Just curious. You’re in your twenties."

"Wait—do you want a girlfriend?" A sharp glint flashed in Wei Jing’s eyes.

"Not at all. My condition can’t handle stress, I’m not cut out for relationships." The words tasted bitter, his heart aching.
