Chapter 50: Naming
Seeing Jiang Chenghan and Yan Jingshu both smiling and nodding, the unprepared Xie Huan was suddenly at a loss, not knowing how to react. He stammered, "This—this isn’t appropriate. After all, this is your first child. Why not… why not let the Dowager Lady choose the name instead?"
With elders present, no matter how moved Xie Huan felt in his heart, he couldn’t bring himself to accept such a significant responsibility so readily.
Before Jiang Chenghan or Yan Jingshu could respond, the Dowager Lady Yan smiled kindly and said, "I’ll pass. I was the one who named Jingshu back then, so I won’t take on this task again. Jingshu's uncle, you should do it. This is Jingshu and Chenghan’s wish, so don’t hesitate—just choose a name."
When Yan Jingshu’s eldest brother was born, as the first son of the Yan family, his name was chosen by the family head, the Duke of Anguo. By the time Yan Jingshu was born, the Duke had intended for Xie Shi to name him, but Xie Shi deferred to the Dowager Lady. It wasn’t until Yan Jingyu was born that Xie Shi, without waiting for the Duke’s input, chose the name "Yu" (jade) for her daughter.
Jiang Chenghan and Yan Jingshu had already prepared several names for their child in advance, but even at the moment of birth, they hadn’t settled on one. They weren’t in a hurry, as the name only needed to be finalized before registering the child. However, they hadn’t expected Xie Huan to return on the very day Yan Jingshu gave birth.
Unaware of the deeper circumstances, Yan Jingshu assumed Xie Huan had rushed back out of concern for him and was deeply moved. After giving birth, he discussed with Jiang Chenghan the idea of letting Xie Huan select a name from the ones they had brainstormed.
Jiang Chenghan had no objections—in fact, he even suggested letting Xie Huan name the child outright. Though surprised by Jiang Chenghan’s generosity, Yan Jingshu ultimately agreed.
With the Dowager Lady’s words, Xie Huan could no longer refuse. He nodded and accepted the task. Despite his initial reluctance, deep down, he was both delighted and willing.
Overcome with joy and excitement, Xie Huan couldn’t contain himself and stood up to approach the bed to see his grandchild. The tiny infant was swaddled in bright red cloth, its skin as fair and tender as a peeled egg. The delicate little features bore a striking resemblance to Yan Jingshu.
Gazing at the child, then at Yan Jingshu, Xie Huan recalled the Dowager Lady’s earlier words. His heart ached faintly, and his lips moved softly as if murmuring two syllables—"Rongjia…"
Though Xie Huan’s voice was quiet, the room was silent, so Jiang Chenghan, Yan Jingshu, and the Dowager Lady all heard the name.
"Rongjia (容嘉)?" Yan Jingshu repeated the name softly and, for some reason, instantly took a liking to it. He couldn’t help saying, "Is this the name Uncle chose for the baby? Is it ‘Rong’ as in ‘composure,’ and ‘Jia’ as in ‘to offer fine wine and receive abundant blessings’?"
Xie Huan looked at Yan Jingshu in surprise, then his expression softened with emotion. "Yes, those are the characters. I hope that your child—yours and Chenghan’s—will face all things in life with composure and lead a beautiful existence, no matter the hardships encountered."
"Thank you, Uncle. I love this name," Yan Jingshu said with a bright smile, turning to the baby beside him. "Little one, you have a name now. You are Rongjia—Jiang Rongjia. Doesn’t it sound lovely?"
"It’s a fine name," the Dowager Lady remarked. Though not as well-read as Xie Huan, she recognized the auspicious meaning behind "Rongjia." She thought to herself that Xie Huan, as a disciple of a great scholar, had effortlessly come up with such an excellent name.
Jiang Chenghan, however, noticed Xie Huan’s lingering gaze on Yan Jingshu and had a very different thought. The name "Rongjia" was likely not something Xie Huan had just conceived—it was probably a name he had prepared eighteen years ago but only now had the chance to voice.
After the ordeal of childbirth, Yan Jingshu was understandably exhausted. Once the baby’s name was settled, he barely spoke a few more words before drowsiness overtook him. The Dowager Lady and Xie Huan urged him to rest, then quietly left the bedroom. Since it was time to feed the baby, they took the child with them.
Jiang Chenghan stayed behind, intending to keep Yan Jingshu company until he fell asleep before leaving.
It was midsummer, and though Ningcheng was in the north, the heat was still intense. Fortunately, Jiang Chenghan had stored plenty of ice in their cellar during winter, so he placed several basins of ice around the room to keep it comfortably cool.
Yan Jingshu soon drifted off. Seeing him asleep, Jiang Chenghan gently drew the bed curtains and instructed Wenxiu to keep watch before leaving the bedroom.
After a quick meal and checking on the baby, Jiang Chenghan hurried to the Governor’s residence as it was getting late.
Many in the Governor’s residence had seen the servant delivering news to Jiang Chenghan earlier. Upon his arrival, they inquired, and upon learning that his fulang had safely given birth, they congratulated him warmly.
After making his rounds and reporting to Kou Shijun, Jiang Chenghan headed to the new recruits’ camp to continue their training—his primary duty at the time. Though the task was tedious and somewhat beneath his abilities, he had volunteered for it and thus had to see it through diligently.
For nearly three hours that afternoon, Jiang Chenghan drilled the recruits until they were crying for mercy, only then leaving the camp satisfied and returning home.
By then, Yan Jingshu had already woken, though the discomfort of childbirth kept him bedridden. The Dowager Lady and Xie Huan remained in the bedroom to keep him company.
Upon arriving home, Jiang Chenghan didn’t immediately go to see Yan Jingshu and the baby. After spending the afternoon under the sun with the recruits, he was drenched in sweat. Not wanting to subject his wife and child to the smell, he first went to the bathhouse to wash thoroughly and change into fresh clothes before heading to their bedroom.
"What’s got you so happy?" Jiang Chenghan asked as he reached the doorway, hearing Yan Jingshu’s delighted voice from inside.
Without pausing, he lifted the door curtain and entered, seeing Yan Jingshu propped up against the headboard, cradling the baby while looking at Xie Huan with joy-filled eyes. "Uncle, is what you just said true?"
