The Young Master Becomes a Wife Chapter 80 Part 2 (End)

"Who was it?" Jiang Rongjia asked, his face solemn. This matter absolutely could not be dropped.

"A palace maid who tends the incense in Zhaohua Palace. But that maid was likely acting under someone else's orders. The person behind it still needs to be investigated," Xiao Yanchu said. A mere palace maid wouldn't have the nerve to drug him herself.

Jiang Rongjia nodded. "I will tell my father about this. We must find the mastermind behind it." Jiang Chenghan's Inspectorate was directly under the emperor's command, so this matter fell squarely within the official duties.

Having made up his mind, Jiang Rongjia wanted to leave the palace immediately to inform Jiang Chenghan. Starting the investigation sooner would mean eliminating the threat to Xiao Yanchu sooner. Compared to Xiao Yanchu's safety, nothing else mattered.

But before leaving, he still couldn't help worrying and instructed Xiao Yanchu: "Your Majesty, please focus on resting and recovering properly. You should retire for the night early, and pay close attention to your meals. Be certain to avoid any foods that might cause irritation or inflammation, and take great care to keep the wound completely dry to prevent any worsening of the injury..."

He continued on, offering a lengthy and detailed list of instructions and cautions. Xiao Yanchu listened patiently, a soft smile gracing his features as he nodded in acknowledgment and agreement to each one. Only then did Jiang Rongjia feel slightly reassured. After taking his leave, he turned to go. Xiao Yanchu personally saw him out to the palace door.

Descending the steps, Jiang Rongjia, for some reason, glanced back. The hall was brightly lit by candles. Under the majestic and ornate palace eaves, Xiao Yanchu stood quietly by the door, his solitary and slight figure making Jiang Rongjia's heart inexplicably ache.

Returning home, Jiang Rongjia immediately told Jiang Chenghan about the drugging incident involving Xiao Yanchu in Zhaohua Palace. Jiang Chenghan's face instantly turned stern and serious, and he left home at once for the Inspectorate.

After seeing Jiang Chenghan off, Yan Jingshu couldn't help but sigh. "Even if we uncover this one, I'm afraid there will be a second, a third… Until the matter of appointing an Empress is settled, neither the court nor the inner palace will have true peace…"

Jiang Rongjia's body stiffened. He pressed his lips together, a struggle visible in his eyes. After a long moment, he finally spoke. Some things were ultimately inescapable.

"Dad, half a month ago, His Majesty summoned me to Zhaohua Palace…" Jiang Rongjia took a deep breath and poured out everything that had happened over this period—Xiao Yanchu's words, his vows, his own confusion and hesitation—all in one go.

Yan Jingshu listened quietly throughout, his expression not changing in the slightest, as if he wasn't surprised at all. After Jiang Rongjia finished speaking, he thought for a moment, then asked him one question: "Jiajia, if you weren't a shuang'er, but a woman, would you still find this situation difficult?"

Jiang Rongjia instinctively said, "Of course not, but—" His words cut off abruptly because he instantly understood why Yan Jingshu had asked that.

If he were a woman, receiving such deep affection and commitment from Xiao Yanchu, he would be deeply moved—how could he possibly be troubled, hesitant, or indecisive? But he wasn't a woman. Not only was he not a woman, he was a shuang'er who had difficulty conceiving offspring. Even if he and Xiao Yanchu were together, it was highly likely they would have no heirs in the future.

Moreover, he could not bear to disappoint Xiao Yanchu's sincere feelings or leave him isolated and alone. Yet, even more than this, he had never forgotten the earnest teachings instilled in him by his two fathers. He was unwilling to throw away his own future and cause them the pain of disappointment.

Jiang Rongjia had come to understand. What he was uncertain about was not how to reject Xiao Yanchu, but how to avoid both hurting Xiao Yanchu and disappointing his two fathers. As for whether he himself had feelings for Xiao Yanchu, it was now clearer than ever.

Suddenly realizing this, Jiang Rongjia could not help but feel somewhat ashamed.

Seeing him like this, Yan Jingshu smiled gently and, just as he had done in his childhood, softly stroked his hair. Then, as if able to read his thoughts, he said warmly, "Jia'er, Yanchu is also a child we have watched grow up. Your father and I both trust his character and have long been aware of his feelings for you, so we had anticipated this day would come..."

Jiang Rongjia suddenly looked up, his eyes widening slightly in surprise.

But Yan Jingshu brought up another matter, saying, "Do you still remember when the Thirteenth Prince sought to marry you?"

Jiang Rongjia did not know why his father suddenly mentioned this, but he nodded nonetheless.

Yan Jingshu then proceeded to tell him about the plans Xiao Yanchu had devised with Jiang Chenghan and Mu Chongyan after that incident, concluding, "...At that time, I already understood his intentions. I just never expected he would restrain himself until now to speak to you."

Jiang Rongjia lowered his gaze and remained silent, but the shock in his heart was known only to himself.

Yan Jingshu understood his feelings and did not require any response from him. He simply continued, "Dad knows your concerns, but Dad wants you to understand more than anything that no wealth or status is half as important as you and Kang'er. Don't force or compromise yourself for the sake of your father and me. Doing what you truly wish to do is the only thing your father and I want to see."

After a long silence, Jiang Rongjia said slowly, "...I understand, Dad."

After speaking with Yan Jingshu, Jiang Rongjia returned to his room and lay awake all night. The next morning, he went to Hanlin Academy at the usual hour as scheduled. After the emperor concluded his court session, Jiang Rongjia once again went to Zhaohua Palace to see Xiao Yanchu.

However, contrary to Yan Jingshu's expectations, no announcement followed regarding Xiao Yanchu appointing Jiang Rongjia as empress. The situation appeared unchanged. Though perplexed, Yan Jingshu refrained from questioning Jiang Rongjia—since he had already told him to follow his own wishes, he did not question him about it.

But not long after, rumors suddenly spread from the palace that Xiao Yanchu had been poisoned, leaving him bedridden. As the poison was severe and medicine proved ineffective, he was nearing his final moments.

The news caused an uproar throughout the capital, and naturally, many began to stir with ambition. It was at this time that Master Huizhi of the Wanfa Temple on the capital's outskirts, while praying for blessings, received divine guidance through the Buddha's mercy. He calculated a specific birth chart, stating that the emperor's fate was too weighty, hence this life-and-death calamity. If someone with this birth chart could be registered as his companion, he would overcome this trial and live a life free of worry.

The emperor immediately issued an edict, ordering a search for the person with this birth chart. Regardless of whether the person was woman or shuang'er, commoner or noble, they would be made empress.

The capital was once again thrown into an uproar, with countless people discussing and marveling, the commotion growing increasingly fervent. Another month passed in this manner. Just as the emperor, critically ill and on the verge of death, seemed unable to hold on, heaven finally took pity. The one and only person with this birth chart was found: Jiang Rongjia, son of Jiang Chenghan, Chief Commander of the Inspectorate, and a Compiler in the Hanlin Academy.

The enthronement ceremony was grand and magnificent. To everyone's greater joy, after the emperor's grand wedding, his health gradually began to improve. Although the poison had damaged his foundation, leaving him far less healthy than before, this outcome was still met with immense relief. Towards Jiang Rongjia, who had a promising future but was compelled to become empress, people felt both sympathy and profound gratitude.

To ensure Jiang Rongjia would not face the slightest criticism, Xiao Yanchu had exhausted all his ingenuity. Fortunately, he ultimately achieved his wish, and his efforts were not in vain.

Five years after the emperor and empress's grand wedding, as the empress had not produced an heir, the matter of selecting consorts and taking concubines was raised again. The emperor seemed to soften under repeated persuasion. However, as soon as the selected women entered the palace, the emperor fell ill once more. The master from Wanfa Temple stated that the union of the emperor and empress was a heaven-bestowed marriage by the Buddha's grace. If others were involved, it would hinder this celestial harmony and be greatly detrimental to the emperor.

Thus, the selection had to be stopped. After all the selected women left the palace, the emperor's illness unexpectedly healed without medicine. While ministers and the populace marveled, they could not help but worry about the imperial succession.

However, as Master Huizhi had stated, since this was a marriage predestined by heaven, how could it be incomplete? Therefore, not long after the selection process was stopped, joyous news emerged from the palace: the empress was expecting a child.

The emperor was overjoyed. He issued an imperial decree granting amnesty to prisoners, reduced taxes, held En Ke, and prayed for blessings for the empress. Six months later, the empress successfully gave birth to a daughter. The emperor was exceedingly fond of her and immediately enfeoffed her as Crown Princess.

For the Crown Princess's full moon celebration, the emperor and empress invited their closest kin to Zhaohua Palace to celebrate, sharing the joys of family life.

Chapter 80 Final Chapter

"Your Majesty, I, your subject, do not understand..." Jiang Rongjia was bewildered, his words even becoming slightly stuttered.

Xiao Yanchu was still smiling, but a trace of something like plaintive melancholy seemed to flicker in the depths of his eyes as he gazed at Jiang Rongjia and said plaintively, "Does Jiajia truly not understand, or is it that you do not wish to understand?"

Jiang Rongjia opened his mouth, but his throat seemed choked by something, leaving him unable to speak.

Xiao Yanchu had acted on impulse today. Although he was somewhat disappointed at not receiving Jiang Rongjia's answer, he was not entirely surprised. Unwilling to pressure Jiang Rongjia further, he took a slight step back.

Only then did Jiang Rongjia unconsciously let out a small sigh of relief and relax considerably.

But the next moment, he heard Xiao Yanchu say, "...There is only one person in the world fit to be this emperor's empress. If I can gain that person companionship, it will naturally be my lifelong fortune. If I cannot, then I will simply be a lone ruler for the rest of my life."

Xiao Yanchu's tone was gentle, yet the resolute determination in his words was unmistakable. They fell on Jiang Rongjia's ears like a clap of thunder. His body trembled slightly, and he looked at Xiao Yanchu, almost unable to believe what he had just heard

In the end, Jiang Rongjia still could not give Xiao Yanchu the answer he desired. Even after being personally escorted home by the carriage and guards sent by Xiao Yanchu, and seeing the imperial guards take their leave, his mind remained in turmoil and his spirit unsettled.

He took a deep breath, vigorously rubbed his face, and then put on his usual expression before stepping through his home's doorway. Instinctively, he did not want his family to know about his matters with Xiao Yanchu, at least not before he had figured things out for himself.

Jiang Rongjia was intent on hiding it, so Jiang Chenghan and Yan Jingshu did not notice anything. The next day, when he returned to the Hanlin Academy and was initially troubled about how to face Xiao Yanchu, Jiang Rongjia did not receive any further imperial summons from the emperor, which made him sigh with relief.

The days that followed seemed no different from the past. Xiao Yanchu did not seek out Jiang Rongjia again, nor did he make any other moves. Jiang Rongjia simply went to and from his office on time each day as usual. This gave him a faint illusion, as if the words he had heard that day were merely his own delusion, and that nothing had actually happened at all.

But Jiang Rongjia knew that some things could not be truly treated as if they never happened just because he pretended to know nothing. Especially since, although he could not attend court, as Xiao Yanchu's reign progressed and court affairs stabilized, the matter of appointing an empress and taking consorts had reached a point where delay was no longer possible.

Besides the court officials pressing him relentlessly, many restless clan relatives also took advantage of the situation to fish in troubled waters, stirring up quite a few incidents. Yet Xiao Yanchu remained unchanged in his original intention, refusing to yield on this matter no matter how earnestly the court officials and imperial clan pleaded or urged.

Jiang Rongjia couldn't help but worry for Xiao Yanchu. He wanted to see him, but didn't know what to say, feeling both anxious and conflicted.

As the situation seemed to intensify, even rumors began spreading rampantly among the common people, with some even circulating that Xiao Yanchu might be impotent. Jiang Rongjia finally couldn't bear it anymore. Shortly after a morning court session ended one day, for the first time, he took the initiative to go to Zhaohua Palace and request an audience with Xiao Yanchu.

Jiang Rongjia actually didn't know what to say to Xiao Yanchu upon meeting him, but no matter what, he could not keep avoiding him like this. This matter had to be resolved one way or another.

On the way there, Jiang Rongjia kept thinking about the scene of meeting Xiao Yanchu again, what Xiao Yanchu might say, and what he should say in return. However, he had considered many possibilities, but the one thing he never expected was that Xiao Yanchu would refuse to see him.

Having never been refused by Xiao Yanchu before, Jiang Rongjia froze on the spot upon hearing the palace attendant's reply, momentarily unsure how to react.

"Is Brother Moyan angry with me? Is it because I have been avoiding him and refusing to meet all this time?"

Jiang Rongjia felt somewhat wronged. Although he hadn't taken the initiative to seek him out, Xiao Yanchu had also never summoned him since that day. He had initially felt a sense of relief, but now, upon reflection—after confessing such heartfelt words, to then withdraw completely without a single meeting—could it all have been merely to toy with his feelings?

Jiang Rongjia pressed his lips together without saying a word, turned around, and was about to leave. He would never come here again, he thought to himself, stepping heavily down the stairs in front of Zhaohua Palace, one step at a time.

Just then, the sound of hurried footsteps approached. "Quickly, quickly, the imperial physicians are here—"

Jiang Rongjia instinctively paused his steps and looked towards the sound. He saw one of the palace attendants who served closely by Xiao Yanchu's side leading several imperial physicians, rushing hurriedly into Zhaohua Palace.

A moment later, Jiang Rongjia abruptly spun on his heel and broke into a run, charging back toward Zhaohua Palace. Disregarding the attendants' attempts to block him, he pushed the door open and barged in, heading straight for the bedchamber with the familiarity of one who knew the way well.

"Lord Jiang, Lord Jiang, you must not—" The attendant trying to stop Jiang Rongjia chased after him inside but was unable to hold him back.

His eyes were shut, his features drawn with exhaustion as he lay reclined on the bed. One hand pressed against his temple in a slow, circular motion, while the other arm lay limp over the edge of the bed. His sleeve was rolled up, revealing a forearm stained with bright red blood.

In the bedchamber, there were imperial physicians and palace attendants, creating a somewhat noisy atmosphere. Because of this, Xiao Yanchu did not initially hear Jiang Rongjia's footsteps. It wasn't until the palace attendants who were trying to stop Jiang Rongjia chased inside that he opened his eyes and looked over. "Jiajia?"

After a moment of surprise, remembering something, Xiao Yanchu hurriedly pulled down his sleeve to cover his forearm. But by then, it was already too late.

The stark, vivid red blood caught Jiang Rongjia's eye. His pupils constricted sharply, his expression changing drastically. "What happened? Who hurt you?"

Even though the injury was on his own body, Xiao Yanchu didn't seem the least bit nervous. He even smiled to reassure Jiang Rongjia, saying, "Jiajia, you know my skills. Who could possibly hurt me? Don't worry, it's just a superficial wound. It'll heal in a few days."

But Jiang Rongjia wasn't someone Xiao Yanchu could fool with just a few words. His face remained stern and grave. He stopped engaging with Xiao Yanchu and instead stood silently to the side, watching the imperial physicians examine and treat Xiao Yanchu. After the physicians finished taking Xiao Yanchu's pulse and bandaging the wound, their diagnosis matched what Xiao Yanchu had just said—confirming it was indeed only a superficial wound with no other serious issues. Jiang Rongjia still said nothing.

Once the treatment was finished, the imperial physicians took their leave and departed. Seeing that Jiang Rongjia's expression still hadn't softened in the slightest, Xiao Yanchu felt somewhat helpless. He then dismissed all the palace attendants as well.

Only then did Jiang Rongjia speak, looking directly at Xiao Yanchu. "What exactly happened?"

Just as Xiao Yanchu opened his mouth to offer an explanation, Jiang Rongjia cut him off, his voice firm and leaving no room for evasion. "Don't even think about trying to deceive me. If you choose not to tell me the truth today, then you need not ever speak of it again."

Xiao Yanchu paused. The words on the tip of his tongue ultimately didn't dare come out. Seeing Jiang Rongjia's resolute expression, he had no choice but to say, "It's really nothing. I just drank some soup that had something added to it. To alleviate the effects of the drug, I made a small cut on my arm, that's all."

Upon hearing this, Jiang Rongjia immediately frowned. "Someone dared to drug you?! Are the effects resolved? Could it affect your health?" Since Xiao Yanchu had already told him it was just a superficial wound, those physicians naturally had to follow Xiao Yanchu's lead in their statements.

Xiao Yanchu shook his head. Knowing this matter couldn't be brushed off lightly, he explained truthfully: "It was just Hehuan San (a type of aphrodisiac). It's not harmful to the body, but the effects are strong, and it came on quite violently. The effects have now been resolved, so it's fine."

Jiang Rongjia was not an ignorant child, he naturally knew what Hehuan San was, which made him even angrier. Using such a filthy thing on Xiao Yanchu to force his compliance was utterly despicable.

The Young Master Becomes a Wife Chapter 79 Part 4

A clear and bright, pleasant voice began to read at a steady pace, like jade falling into a clear spring or a gentle breeze brushing across the face, making Xiao Yanchu's fatigue and weariness seem to vanish in an instant.

After finishing one memorial, Jiang Rongjia returned it to Xiao Yanchu, who took it back with a smile and said, "Thank you for your hard work, Jiajia."

"It is my duty to share Your Majesty's burdens," Jiang Rongjia replied.

Xiao Yanchu sighed inwardly. Now that he was emperor, things were ultimately different from before. Fortunately, he had long been mentally prepared for this and did not dwell on it for too long. After reviewing the memorial with a vermilion brush, he picked up another one and handed it to Jiang Rongjia.
[朱批 (zhū pī): lit. vermilion brush; fig. the emperor's personal comments and instructions, written in red ink on official documents, which carried his absolute authority.]

This time, however, Xiao Yanchu instructed, "Jiajia, you can skim through the memorial first, summarize and condense it, and just tell me the main points. That way, you won’t have to exert yourself too much, and we can save some time."

If Jiang Rongjia really were to read every single memorial word for word, he would likely lose his voice before tomorrow. How could he bear that?

Jiang Rongjia didn't perceive that Xiao Yanchu's original intention was to spare him, but he also felt that what Xiao Yanchu said made sense. Thus, he followed the advice and first quickly read through the memorials himself from beginning to end, then summarized the main content of the memorials and relayed it to Xiao Yanchu.

With Jiang Rongjia's companionship and assistance, Xiao Yanchu was in a pleasant mood, making reviewing memorials increasingly easier and much faster. However, it didn't take long before Xiao Yanchu could no longer smile.

The cause was a memorial submitted by the Censor-in-Chief, stating that the emperor's rear palace was empty, with no heir to the throne, which might cause unease among the officials and people, jeopardizing the stability of the state. This argument advocated for the emperor to conduct broad selections of accomplished women to serve as empress and consorts, thereby populating the rear palace to ensure the perpetuation of the imperial bloodline.
[后宮 (hòugōng): lit. rear palace; fig. the secluded living quarters for the emperor's consorts, concubines, and female attendants, which was a central part of the imperial household's inner court.]

When Xiao Yanchu first ascended the throne, it was customary to hold a selection of consorts, but he used the reason of observing mourning for his imperial grandfather to cancel the large-scale selection. However, this reason clearly did not convince the court officials. Even if Xiao Yanchu was only the imperial grandson, as the successor to the throne, there was no precedent for refusing to marry and produce an heir due to mourning.

So, despite Xiao Yanchu's stance, the court officials continued to press the issue. They brought it up in court discussions, and now it was written in memorials, denying Xiao Yanchu any moment of peace.

Although annoyed by the officials' persistence, Xiao Yanchu wasn't worried. As long as he didn't relent, others' words were useless. But he hadn't expected Jiang Rongjia to learn about this matter today, which suddenly left him feeling unsettled.

He initially thought to set the memorial aside and ignore it, to let Jiang Rongjia understand his stance, but seeing Jiang Rongjia with downcast eyes, appearing indifferent, Xiao Yanchu paused.

"Jiajia, do you think the Censor-in-Chief is right?" Holding the memorial, Xiao Yanchu looked directly at Jiang Rongjia, his smile unchanged, but something hidden deep in his eyes.

Jiang Rongjia didn't expect Xiao Yanchu to ask him this. He pursed his lips and thought for a moment before saying, "What the Censor-in-Chief said isn't without reason..."

Although he had anticipated this, hearing these words still made Xiao Yanchu's heart ache, his grip on the memorial tightening until his knuckles turned white.

But Jiang Rongjia didn't notice Xiao Yanchu's unusual reaction and continued, "However, whether it's the empress or consorts, they are ultimately the emperor's intimate partners and should suit the emperor's preferences. If Your Majesty is unwilling but feels compelled to comply for other reasons, it may not benefit the state, and it would... wrong Your Majesty."

Upon hearing this, the bitterness in Xiao Yanchu's eyes instantly vanished. Jiang Rongjia was different from others after all, compared to matters of court and state, he ultimately cared most about Xiao Yanchu himself.

A happy smile tugged at his lips, and he relaxed his hand, dropping the nearly crumpled memorial on the corner of the desk. Overjoyed, Xiao Yanchu couldn't help but add, "Suit my preferences? But what if the one who suits my preferences is unwilling to enter the palace?"

"Unwilling to enter the palace?" Jiang Rongjia was stunned, a strange emotion rising in his heart. He didn't know whether to be surprised that Xiao Yanchu had someone he liked or astonished that this person could reject even an emperor like Xiao Yanchu. He couldn't help saying, "Your Majesty is the ruler of the world, dragon-like and majestic, peerless in nobility. How could anyone refuse Your Majesty?"

But Xiao Yanchu shook his head and sighed, "It's not that this person is unwilling to enter the palace, but the palace rules are complex and restrictive, unlike the freedom and comfort outside. I cannot bear to bind and trap this person within these towering palace walls for life, as I am."

Faced with such deep affection from Xiao Yanchu, how could Jiang Rongjia remain unmoved? But that inexplicable emotion in his heart suddenly swelled, leaving him confused and at a loss for words.

After a long while, he finally moved his lips and said softly, with downcast eyes, "Your Majesty's deep affection, if that person knew, would surely be moved and couldn't bear to leave Your Majesty alone in solitude."

If Xiao Yanchu married and eventually had children, the court officials would no longer pressure him, his throne would be more secure, and he would be marrying someone he loved, ensuring a happy and fulfilling life. Jiang Rongjia felt he should be happy for Xiao Yanchu, though he couldn't see how forced his smile was at that moment.

But Xiao Yanchu saw it clearly. Whether it was Jiang Rongjia's strained smile or his unconsciously clenched fingers, it all stirred waves of joy in Xiao Yanchu's heart that lingered for a long time.

After Jiang Rongjia finished speaking, he heard no response from Xiao Yanchu for a long time. When he snapped out of his inexplicable emotions and looked up, Xiao Yanchu was already close at hand. "Your Majesty—"

Xiao Yanchu gazed at Jiang Rongjia, his eyes filled with unmistakable tenderness. In a gentle voice, soft as a whisper, he said to Jiang Rongjia, "Jiajia, you said yourself that you couldn't bear to leave me alone in solitude. You must keep your word."

Jiang Rongjia's eyes widened in shock.

The Young Master Becomes a Wife Chapter 79 Part 3

Seeing Jiang Rongjia answering so diligently, Xiao Yanchu felt immensely proud. At the same time, he worried that Jiang Rongjia might be hungry. However, he did not dare to go and disturb him. He could only stay in the hall and watch over him carefully, naturally having no appetite for a meal himself.

The palace attendants thought about urging him to eat, but their new emperor, who seemed gentle, sincere, and easy-going, was actually a man of his word who particularly disliked others defying his wishes. Thus, they did not dare to say more.

Another half hour passed like this. Just as Xiao Yanchu was almost becoming impatient with waiting, Jiang Rongjia finally let out a long sigh of relief and set down his brush.

Xiao Yanchu promptly gave an order to those around him. The palace attendants, upon receiving the command, left the Taihe Hall without a moment's delay. By the time Jiang Rongjia had finished reviewing his examination paper from start to finish, ensuring there were no issues, and set it down again, palace attendants from the Imperial Kitchen entered the Taihe Hall at just that moment, carrying food boxes filled with fresh, steaming dishes.

As dusk fell, the drum sounded, marking the official end of the palace examination. After paying respects to the emperor, the scholars were led out of the Taihe Hall and out of the palace by officials from the Honglu Temple, while the examination papers were sealed by sealing officers, stamped with official seals, and then sent to the grading officers for evaluation by the ministers in charge of reading the papers.
[Honglu Temple (Hónglú Sì, 鸿胪寺): an ancient Chinese government institution responsible for ceremonial rites, diplomacy, and hosting state guests during the Ming and Qing dynasties.]

Outside the palace gate, many carriages and people were already waiting to pick up the scholars who had taken the exam. The Jiang family's carriage was naturally among them. By this time, Jiang Chenghan had already left his office and came with Yan Jingshu to pick up Jiang Rongjia.

On the way back to the residence, Jiang Chenghan and Jiang Rongkang rode on horseback on either side of the carriage, while Jiang Rongjia, Yan Jingshu, and Xie Huan rode inside the carriage. Neither Xie Huan nor Yan Jingshu had ever participated in the palace examination, and seeing that Jiang Rongjia was in high spirits without any sign of fatigue, they immediately asked him about the palace examination. Jiang Rongjia naturally shared everything he knew.

Unlike the imperial examination, the results of the palace examination were announced much more quickly. On the third day after the palace examination, the golden list was posted. Anyone who had been present at the palace examination that day would have noticed that the top three scholars on this year's list were the three who had focused on their papers, undisturbed by the delicacies or external distractions. Jiang Rongjia was naturally among them, though this time he did not take first place but instead ranked third as the Tanhua Lang.
[探花郎 (tàn huā láng): lit. one who explores the flowers; fig. the scholar who achieved the third highest score in the palace examination, a title historically and popularly associated with being the most handsome and talented young scholar among the top three.]

Although Xiao Yanchu was fond of Jiang Rongjia, the ranking was decided after discussions with eight grading ministers. He did not let his personal feelings make Jiang Rongjia the Zhuangyuan, as that would have discredited Jiang Rongjia. However, even though Jiang Rongjia was not the Zhuangyuan (top-ranked scholar), at just seventeen years old, he was the youngest Tanhua Lang since the dynasty's founding.

With the palace examination results announced, Jiang Rongjia was not yet free. First, he followed the Zhuangyuan in a parade on horseback, and then he attended the Qionglin Banquet. His family also held a grand banquet to celebrate, and he received invitations from classmates, close friends, and old acquaintances, which he could not refuse entirely. Thus, even though the palace examination was over, Jiang Rongjia felt even more exhausted than during the preparation period.
[Qionglin Banquet: the prestigious banquet held in honor of scholars who had successfully passed the palace examination during the Song and subsequent dynasties]

Fortunately, this busy period did not last long. Soon enough, it was time for Jiang Rongjia to assume his position at the Hanlin Academy. As the third-ranked candidate in the first tier, he was appointed as a Compiler in the Hanlin Academy. Although it was only a seventh-rank minor official position and not as conducive to accumulating political achievements as being assigned to a local post like the Zhuangyuan and Bangyan (the second highest score in the palace examination), it was a position close to the emperor, which reflected Xiao Yanchu's personal intentions.
[Hanlin Academy: the imperial academy and top-tier administrative body composed of the nation's most distinguished scholars and officials in imperial China.]

Jiang Rongjia had no objections to this. After all, he was still young, and if he were assigned to a local post, not only would Xiao Yanchu be worried, but Jiang Chenghan and Yan Jingshu would also be concerned. Staying in the capital allowed him to serve the country while avoiding his family's worries, which was a win-win situation.

Although the Hanlin Editor-Compiler was originally responsible for drafting imperial decrees, edicts, and confidential documents, due to Xiao Yanchu's personal intentions, Jiang Rongjia spent most of his time in the emperor's living quarters in Zhaohua Palace, rather than in the Hanlin Academy.

Jiang Rongjia was initially summoned to Zhaohua Palace under the pretext of serving as a shidu. However, once inside, Xiao Yanchu dismissed most of the palace attendants, leaving only two trusted aides to serve tea. Instead of taking out a book to read, he directly picked up a memorial from the imperial desk and handed it to Jiang Rongjia.
[侍读 (shìdú): an official scholarly title for a court academician whose duty was to read and discuss classical texts with the emperor or the imperial heirs.]

Jiang Rongjia naturally did not dare to accept it and hurriedly said, "Your Majesty, I dare not."

Xiao Yanchu simply shoved it into Jiang Rongjia's hands and said with a troubled and weary expression, "Jiajia, please help me out. I've been reviewing memorials for two hours since the morning court, and my eyes are almost blurry. Could you read it to me?"

Jiang Rongjia was initially startled, but upon hearing that he only needed to read it to Xiao Yanchu, and although it was not his duty, serving the emperor was a subject's responsibility. Moreover, seeing that Xiao Yanchu's eyes were somewhat bloodshot, he finally agreed.

The Young Master Becomes a Wife Chapter 79 Part 2

Jiang Rongjia looked out the window. Indeed, dusk had deepened. Although he felt somewhat reluctant, he had to gently wake Xiao Yanchu up. "Your Majesty? Your Majesty, wake up. It's time to return to the palace."

Xiao Yanchu was a light sleeper and woke up quickly. Once he stood up, there was no trace of drowsiness in his eyes, only an apologetic look as he said to Jiang Rongjia, "I'm sorry to have troubled you. I don't know how I fell asleep." He had been sitting on the chair, and as drowsiness washed over him, he had unknowingly fallen asleep, his head leaning against Jiang Rongjia.

Jiang Rongjia shook his head and looked at the unmistakable dark circles under Xiao Yanchu's eyes. He couldn't help but say, "Your Majesty is the one who is truly hardworking. With state affairs being so demanding, Your Majesty must also take care of your health and get more rest."

"Alright, I will sincerely remember Jiajia's advice," Xiao Yanchu replied, still smiling cheerfully. However, unlike the smile he wore when facing imperial relatives, officials, and other outsiders, this smile was the most genuine and came straight from the heart.

Then, he thought of something, and the smile on his face deepened. He said, "Fortunately, En Ke is about to begin. Jiajia, you are knowledgeable, have a strong memory, and possess exceptional literary talent. You are certain to rank among the top. When that time comes, you can enter the court as an official, and then I will be able to relax much more."

"Your Majesty praises me too highly..." Jiang Rongjia was not an arrogant or proud person by nature and was deeply aware that there was always someone better. The imperial examination gathered outstanding talents from across the land. Although he considered himself diligent and studious, he did not dare to be presumptuously overconfident or place himself above everyone else.

However, Xiao Yanchu had great confidence in Jiang Rongjia. Before Jiang Rongjia could finish speaking, he said, "Is Jiajia unwilling to help me?"

Jiang Rongjia had no choice but to say, "Of course not."

Only then did Xiao Yanchu smile and say, "Then I will await Jiajia in the Taihe Hall." The Taihe Hall had always been the venue for the palace examination. By saying this, Xiao Yanchu was expressing his certainty that Jiang Rongjia would pass the metropolitan examination and obtain the qualification to participate in the palace examination.

Although Jiang Rongjia was not a proud person, Xiao Yanchu believed in him so much that he did not want to fail his expectations. Therefore, in the following days, he declined all visitors and focused wholeheartedly on the imperial examination. Xiao Yanchu, knowing that this was a critical time for Jiang Rongjia, did not disturb him again afterwards. Just as he had said, he simply waited to see Jiang Rongjia again in the Taihe Hall during the palace examination.

Jiang Chenghan, Yan Jingshu, Xie Huan, Mu Chongyan, and others were the same, naturally providing their full support and care for Jiang Rongjia. However, not wanting to put too much pressure on him, they never went to disturb him in person. Instead, after each class, they would ask Xie Huan for updates.

Soon, a month passed, and the metropolitan examination was imminent. On the day of the first exam, aside from Jiang Chenghan, who was on duty, and Mu Chongyan, who could not show up directly, Yan Jingshu, Xie Huan, and Jiang Rongkang all personally saw Jiang Rongjia off to the examination venue.

Like the provincial examination, the metropolitan examination consisted of three sessions, each lasting three days, making a total of nine days. After nine days, the gates of the examination compound opened once more. The candidates emerged in small groups, but their appearance was completely different from when they first entered the compound nine days earlier. Almost everyone was listless, disheveled, and grimy. Among them, Jiang Rongjia, whose clothes were slightly disheveled and who had lost some weight but was still in high spirits, clear-eyed, and steady on his feet, appeared particularly striking.

Yan Jingshu and the others, who had been waiting outside the examination compound to greet him, were not surprised by this. Jiang Rongjia had practiced martial arts with Jiang Chenghan since childhood. Although his innate talent was average and not as gifted as Jiang Rongkang's, years of practice had given him some skill, and his physical constitution was much stronger than that of the typical frail scholar who could not carry a load on his shoulders or lift a weight with his hands, and who immersed himself solely in books, paying no attention to worldly affairs.

Furthermore, Jiang Chenghan had a sudden idea to build a mock examination cell at home, allowing Jiang Rongjia to undergo a simulated exam in advance. This also made Jiang Rongjia much more composed about this metropolitan examination.

Upon returning home, Jiang Rongjia said nothing about the exam, and Yan Jingshu and the others did not ask. After he washed up and had a good meal, they let Jiang Rongjia go rest. Although there were beds in the examination compound, they were nowhere near as comfortable as those at home. As for the metropolitan examination, since it was already over, the results were determined, and asking about it wouldn't change anything, it was better to let Jiang Rongjia get a good rest first.

Ten days later, the results of the metropolitan examination were announced. As everyone had anticipated, Jiang Rongjia was on the list. Moreover, just as Xiao Yanchu had said, he was ranked first. Naturally, Xiao Yanchu got his wish and saw Jiang Rongjia again during the subsequent palace examination.

The palace examination usually lasted an entire day. Most emperors in the past would leave after the exam began. However, Xiao Yanchu could not bear to miss this rare opportunity to see Jiang Rongjia openly and legitimately. Therefore, even after the exam started, he remained in the Taihe Hall. He even descended from the dragon throne to walk among the scholars and observe them.

Naturally, Xiao Yanchu had an ulterior motive. Although he looked at the other scholars as well, he ultimately passed by Jiang Rongjia's side the most times and lingered there the longest.

Around noon, palace attendants brought food for the scholars. To everyone's surprise, while in the past the palace examination only provided steamed buns and tea to relieve hunger and thirst, the meal delivered by the palace servants today included both meat and vegetable dishes, along with soup and pastries, each one exquisitely prepared and delicious.

The Young Master Becomes a Wife Chapter 79 Part 1

Chapter 79: En Ke

On the night after the emperor's passing, Xiao Yanchu came in plain clothes under cover of darkness to visit Jiang Rongjia, but after only saying a few words, he was driven away. After that, Xiao Yanchu obediently listened and did not come again. However, aside from his relationship with Jiang Rongjia, there were also the emperor's funeral and the new emperor's enthronement ceremony. As the crown prince, Xiao Yanchu was indispensable in all these matters, keeping him so busy he had no time to spare, so naturally, he couldn't come even if he wanted to.

The two met again a month later. It was still at the Jiang residence, in Jiang Rongjia's courtyard. Different from before, this time Xiao Yanchu came during the day, but to avoid unnecessary trouble, he was still in plain clothes and traveling incognito.

With the new emperor's ascension to the throne, to demonstrate his benevolence, a general amnesty was declared and an extra special imperial examination, known as En Ke, was announced. Although Jiang Rongjia was somewhat troubled in his heart about his relationship with Xiao Yanchu, once the edict for En Ke was issued, he temporarily set this matter aside and buried himself in books, preparing for the examination.
[恩科 (ēn kē): lit. grace examination; fig. an extra imperial examination held outside the regular schedule to celebrate a special occasion, such as a new emperor's ascension, often granting more candidates the opportunity to pass.]

Xiao Yanchu did not have the servants announce his arrival when he came. Jiang Rongjia was focused on writing an essay and did not notice his arrival for a while. Xiao Yanchu did not disturb him either, only standing quietly by Jiang Rongjia's side watching.

It wasn't until Jiang Rongjia finished an essay and lifted his sore, stiff neck that he felt a pair of warm hands land on his neck, kneading it gently but firmly, that he suddenly came back to his senses.

"Brother Mo—Your Majesty?!" Seeing that the person beside him was actually Xiao Yanchu, Jiang Rongjia was very surprised and delighted. However, the next moment, he suddenly remembered Xiao Yanchu's current status and hurriedly took a step back, avoiding Xiao Yanchu's hands, then bowed and bent his knees to perform the ceremonial greeting.

Before Jiang Rongjia could actually kneel down, Xiao Yanchu's hands firmly held his arms, directly helping him up.

Forced to stand up, Jiang Rongjia was about to say something, but Xiao Yanchu spoke first: "Is Jiajia going to keep his distance from Brother Moyan now?"

Even though he was the sovereign of all under heaven, the one who ruled over all, Jiang Rongjia seemed to hear a hint of grievance in Xiao Yanchu's tone. When he looked up, Xiao Yanchu's face had indeed lost its previous gentle smile, replaced only by full disappointment and melancholy.

Jiang Rongjia's heart clenched. He subconsciously stepped forward and hurriedly said, "Of course not..."

Only then did a smile reappear on Xiao Yanchu's face. "I knew Jiajia wouldn't ignore me."

This time, Jiang Rongjia was somewhat helpless. He deeply understood that now he and Xiao Yanchu were separated by the distinction between ruler and subject. But every time he tried to harden his heart and interact with Xiao Yanchu according to protocol and rules, to avoid causing gossip and criticism for both himself and Xiao Yanchu, Xiao Yanchu would look deeply hurt and abandoned, making Jiang Rongjia not know what to do.

Xiao Yanchu didn't know Jiang Rongjia's concerns. Seeing that Jiang Rongjia was no longer distant and reserved with him, he stepped forward, pulled Jiang Rongjia to sit on a chair, and said gently, "You've been writing essays for a long time, you must be tired. Here, let me massage you for a bit."

"Your Majesty, you must not!" Jiang Rongjia quickly stood up. Although he had said he wouldn't keep his distance from Xiao Yanchu, after all, times were different now. It was absolutely impossible for him to interact with Xiao Yanchu as casually as in the past.

"Why not?" Xiao Yanchu, however, wouldn't let Jiang Rongjia refuse. He pressed him back down and said, "Back when we were in Ningcheng, didn't we often give each other massages? Now I'll massage you first, and later you can massage me. I've been reviewing memorials for several days in a row, my neck is stiff. Jiajia, you have to give me a good massage."

When Xiao Yanchu and Jiang Rongjia lived in Ningcheng as children, besides studying and practicing calligraphy with Yan Jingshu, they also practiced martial arts for an hour every day under Jiang Chenghan's guidance. Although, considering their young age, it was only basic skills like horse stance, it still left them sore and aching every day.

During afternoon breaks or in the evening, they would help each other, taking turns massaging one another. Over time, if nothing else, they both became self-taught and quite skilled at massage techniques.

Hearing Xiao Yanchu talk about the past, Jiang Rongjia couldn't help but recall their days in the border city. Even though several years had passed, thinking about it now still felt like it was just yesterday.

"Your Majesty, are you uncomfortable?" Jiang Rongjia was initially lost in memories brought on by Xiao Yanchu's words, but upon hearing that Xiao Yanchu was uncomfortable, he immediately snapped back to attention. He then stood up, pulled Xiao Yanchu to sit on the chair he had just been sitting on without allowing refusal, rubbed his hands together vigorously a few times to warm his palms.

"I'm fine. I haven't finished massaging you yet, there's no hurry." Xiao Yanchu had actually just said that to keep Jiang Rongjia from refusing him. But Jiang Rongjia's concern for him was just like his concern for Jiang Rongjia. Knowing he was uncomfortable, Jiang Rongjia couldn't possibly remain indifferent.

"I'm really fine, it's okay without a massage. You're the one who doesn't look fine—your shoulders are as hard as wood." As Jiang Rongjia spoke, he already began applying pressure, massaging Xiao Yanchu.

Being cared for by someone he cherished naturally made Xiao Yanchu happy. Feeling Jiang Rongjia's hands repeatedly moving over his back, he couldn't help but smile contentedly and narrow his eyes in comfort. "Jiajia is so good."

Behind him, where Xiao Yanchu couldn't see, Jiang Rongjia pursed his lips, his cheeks unconsciously flushing slightly.

Xiao Yanchu didn't want to hear Jiang Rongjia call him "Your Majesty." It would be best if he could call him Brother Moyan like when they were children, but he knew that wasn't possible now, so he didn't say anything more. Then he closed his eyes, savoring this rare time alone with Jiang Rongjia.

After some time, a voice came from outside the room—it was the palace attendant who had come with Xiao Yanchu reminding him that it was time to return to the palace.

The Young Master Becomes a Wife Chapter 78 Part 5

The turmoil in the court had nothing to do with the Jiang family.

After the Thirteenth Prince's death, Jiang Chenghan and Yan Jingshu returned to the capital. Then, together, they went to Prince Rui's residence to pick up Jiang Rongjia and Jiang Rongkang and bring them home. Life seemed to return to its usual peace. During this time, Jiang Rongjia followed the plan and participated in the imperial examinations. He first passed the preliminary imperial examination and earned the status of Xiucai, a qualified scholar. He then sat for the provincial-level examination, achieving a high ranking on the list of successful candidates.

He had planned to advance to the next stage by taking the national-level metropolitan examination. However, on the eve of that examination, the emperor suddenly passed away, leading to its cancellation.

However, compared to the cancellation of the exam due to the emperor's death, another event shocked Jiang Rongjia even more. On the day the emperor passed away, Jiang Chenghan returned home from the palace and brought them a piece of news.

In front of the emperor's spirit hall, when the various imperial grandsons were again on the verge of armed conflict over the throne, Prince of Chuxiang, Mu Chongyan, appeared with an imperial decree. The decree, written in the emperor's own hand, restored the title of Crown Prince to Xiao Yanchu's father, the former crown prince, and named Xiao Yanchu as the imperial supreme grandson, the official heir to the throne.

Jiang Rongjia didn't listen to the subsequent upheaval in the palace caused by this. His mind was fixated on a few words—Brother Moyan has become emperor.

Jiang Rongjia was happy for Xiao Yanchu. He even felt that this was what Xiao Yanchu deserved. After all, he was the crown prince's son. If the crown prince had not been harmed, he would still be the official heir to the throne now. But while feeling happy for Xiao Yanchu, he couldn't help but feel a trace of melancholy.

Xiao Yanchu had become emperor. In the future, he probably could never be the same with him as before. This realization left Jiang Rongjia's heart aching and heavy, filled with an indescribable sense of despondency and bewilderment.

The emperor passed away and the new emperor ascended the throne. Jiang Rongjia originally thought that he would not see Xiao Yanchu again for a short time, but he did not expect that on the very next night after the emperor's passing, Xiao Yanchu appeared outside his window, dressed in black.

"Brother Moyan?!" Xiao Yanchu's appearance was completely unexpected for Jiang Rongjia. In his surprise, he instinctively called out the childhood name for Xiao Yanchu.

Hearing this long-lost form of address, Xiao Yanchu's smile immediately softened. It felt as if a sweet spring had welled up in his heart, warm and soft, filling his entire body with warmth and joy.

He leaped in through the window in one fluid motion and came to the side of Jiang Rongjia, who was staring at him in a daze. In a slightly hoarse voice, he said, "Jiajia hasn't called me that in so long. It really brings back memories."

Jiang Rongjia snapped back to reality. Meeting Xiao Yanchu's intensely focused gaze, which felt somewhat burning, his heart inexplicably flustered. Instinctively, he tilted his head to avoid it. Then, remembering something, he looked up at Xiao Yanchu again and hurriedly said, "Why are you here? Shouldn't you be in the palace? The emperor has just passed away, and you are the crown prince. How can you leave the palace at a time like this? What if someone discovers you? Hurry, go back quickly." As he spoke, he pushed Xiao Yanchu toward the door.

But Xiao Yanchu grabbed his hand and said with a laugh, "Don't worry, Jiajia. I've made all the arrangements in the palace. With Granduncle there, no one will find out."

Mu Chongyan's mother and the old emperor's mother were sisters, making them cousins. As the old emperor's grandson, Xiao Yanchu should rightly address Mu Chongyan as Granduncle.

Although Xiao Yanchu said this, Jiang Rongjia still couldn't relax. Frowning, he said, "Better safe than sorry. Right now, who knows how many people in the capital are watching you, waiting to catch you making a mistake. How can you be so reckless? What are you doing coming here?"

Even though Xiao Yanchu was now the confirmed crown prince and future emperor, Jiang Rongjia found it difficult to change his attitude toward him and spoke as casually as always.

Xiao Yanchu didn't feel offended at all. Seeing that Jiang Rongjia was still very familiar and casual with him, without any distance or barriers, he felt completely relieved. The smile on his face grew even more genuine as he said, "I missed you. I just wanted to come see you."

When they were younger, Xiao Yanchu often spoke to Jiang Rongjia like this. Every time they were separated for some reason and met again, before parting, Xiao Yanchu would always say, "Jiajia, you have to miss me. I'll miss you too." And when they met again, he would ask, "Do you miss me, Jiajia?" or "I missed you so much."

When Jiang Rongjia was young, he would always honestly say "yes." But as he grew older, he became too embarrassed to say such things. Perhaps sensing this, Xiao Yanchu gradually stopped saying them to him. He never expected to hear such words from Xiao Yanchu again today, especially since Xiao Yanchu had taken such a risk, leaving everything in the palace just to see him.

Jiang Rongjia couldn't quite describe how he felt. Although he was already sixteen, an age where marriage proposals could be discussed, whether it was Jiang Chenghan and Yan Jingshu, or Mu Chongyan, Xie Huan, and Xiao Yanchu, they had all protected him too well, leaving him still inexperienced in matters of love. Faced with Xiao Yanchu's near-confession, he only felt instinctively at a loss, unsure of how to respond.

After stammering for a while, he finally managed to say, "Okay, okay. Now you've seen me. I'm fine, alright? Hurry back to the palace. What if something goes wrong if you delay any longer? Quickly, go back now!"

Xiao Yanchu wasn't surprised by Jiang Rongjia's obliviousness. He hadn't planned to make his feelings known today—he had just missed Jiang Rongjia and wanted to see him. Now that he had seen him, his heart was content.

Not wanting to make Jiang Rongjia worry any further, he didn't insist on staying. He obediently followed Jiang Rongjia's instructions, left the Jiang residence, and returned to the palace.

After Xiao Yanchu left, Jiang Rongjia found himself completely unable to sleep. One moment, he envisioned Xiao Yanchu dressed in imperial robes; the next, he recalled Xiao Yanchu smiling at him and saying he missed him.

His mind felt like a tangled ball of yarn. Lying in bed with his eyes open, he stared at the patterns on the canopy above, unable to sort out his thoughts all night.

The Young Master Becomes a Wife Chapter 78 Part 4

"Father, what about you and Dad..." Jiang Rongjia's face showed worry, not for himself, but for Jiang Chenghan and Yan Jingshu.

Jiang Chenghan was worried about him, but he was equally worried about Jiang Chenghan and Jingshu. What if the Thirteenth Prince, unable to have him, vented his anger and sought revenge against his father and dad?

Jiang Chenghan smiled and rubbed his head, saying, "Don't worry, Father will protect your Dad well. As long as you are safe, Father and your Dad fear nothing."

The news of the Thirteenth Prince's marriage proposal to the eldest young master of the Jiang family being rejected quickly spread throughout the capital. Needless to say, upon learning that the matchmaker had returned empty-handed once again, the Thirteenth Prince was filled with fury and resentment, breeding many thoughts of revenge in his heart.

In the palace, because it involved the Jiang family's Jiang Rongjia, the news was delivered into the palace at the fastest speed, ensuring that Prince Rui, Xiao Yanchu, also learned of it. Upon hearing this, Upon hearing this, the usually slow-spoken, taciturn, and even somewhat cowardly Prince of Rui seemed to instantly transform into a wrathful deity, a fierce and merciless fighter from hell. His eyes turned dark and abyssal, swirling with a heart-palpitating ferocity, malevolence, and menace, not a trace of his usual gentleness remaining.

At dusk, Xiao Yanchu left the imperial palace. Suppressing the urgency in his heart to see Jiang Rongjia immediately, he rode directly back to his residence and then went straight to Junzi Hall where Xie Huan lived, meeting the person he wanted to see, the Prince of Chuxiang, Mu Chongyan.

"You already know." Mu Chongyan asked, though his tone was affirmative.

Xiao Yanchu's expression was stern, his entire being exuding a grim, murderous aura. He pressed his lips together and nodded.

Mu Chongyan continued, "Resolving Jia'er's immediate crisis isn't difficult. But even if we deal with the Thirteenth Prince now, there will inevitably be a second, a third Thirteenth Prince in the future..."

At this point, Mu Chongyan looked up at Xiao Yanchu and said, "My words from back then still hold true. Do you still hold the same intention as before?"

Xiao Yanchu shook his head, closed his eyes, and said in a deep voice, "In the past, I was too naive..."

He had believed that by maintaining a peaceful and non-confrontational stance, he would avoid becoming a target himself and, more importantly, would protect those close to him from harm. However, he failed to realize that his passivity was perceived not as peacekeeping but as weakness—an invitation to be exploited. This perceived vulnerability extended to his loved ones, making them targets as well. This miscalculation was why the Thirteenth Prince, fully aware that Jiang Rongjia was under Xiao Yanchu's protection, felt emboldened to act so brazenly and without fear of consequence.

Mu Chongyan finally showed a trace of a satisfied smile. He stood up, walked to Xiao Yanchu, patted him on the shoulder, and said, "Never place your hopes on others. What you want ultimately must be obtained by yourself. You should have realized this earlier, but it's still not too late now."

Xie Huan had been listening to their conversation. Although Xiao Yanchu and Mu Chongyan spoke somewhat obscurely, Xie Huan, who was well aware of Mu Chongyan's plans, understood what they were discussing. Having already been persuaded by Mu Chongyan, he didn't say anything now, only letting out a faint sigh.

The capital, which had enjoyed a decade of peace, was now poised to witness the eruption of countless scenes of violence and bloodshed. Yet, as thoughts of Jiang Rongjia and Yan Jing Shu filled his mind, Xie Huan pressed his lips together firmly. A cold, stern light appeared in his eyes, reflecting his resolute determination to protect those he cared for, no matter the cost.

The next day, Jiang Chenghan personally escorted Jiang Rongjia and Jiang Rongkang to Prince Rui's residence. Using the excuse of settling the Jiang brothers in, he met with Mu Chongyan inside the residence. After discussions were settled, he left Prince Rui's residence.

For the next several days, the capital was tranquil and uneventful. Neither the Jiang residence nor Prince Rui's residence experienced any disturbances. Everything appeared as peaceful and calm as usual, but Jiang Chenghan and Xiao Yanchu both knew that the Thirteenth Prince's revenge had already begun.

First, Prince Rui was detained in the imperial palace for several days without being allowed to leave, and Jiang Chenghan was also transferred away from the capital to investigate the corruption case involving military pay in Jiangzhou. Knowing that the Thirteenth Prince was using a diversion tactic, Jiang Chenghan decided to play along, but he was worried about leaving Yan Jingshu alone at home and didn't want to implicate the Duke of Anguo's residence, so he took him along.

Although Jiang Rongjia and his brother were at Prince Rui's residence, they were secretly protected by Mu Chongyan. The Thirteenth Prince did send people to infiltrate the residence, but each time they were repelled. Although Jiang Rongkang failed to stab the Thirteenth Prince to death, he managed to kill several of the Thirteenth Prince's men, which somewhat vented his anger.

Due to repeated failures to kidnap Jiang Rongjia and the loss of many personnel, the Thirteenth Prince was forced to reevaluate Xiao Yanchu, a royal nephew he had never taken seriously before. He finally realized that, compared to himself, Xiao Yanchu was the true master of playing dumb while secretly being highly capable.

Unfortunately, he realized this too late. By the time Jiang Chenghan, Mu Chongyan, and others began executing their plan, he had already lost the opportunity to expose Xiao Yanchu's true nature.

The Thirteenth Prince died in his own princely residence, on the bed in his bedroom, while embracing a concubine he had recently taken into his household. She was originally the top courtesan from a renowned brothel in the capital. The cause of death was recorded as a sudden death during sexual intercourse.

Although this manner of death was highly disgraceful, given the multitude of concubines and beauties almost filling the rear courtyard of his princely residence, and the identical diagnoses from over a dozen imperial physicians, no one doubted the cause.

The Thirteenth Prince was dead. Although the cause of his death became a topic of much gossip, it was soon overshadowed by the various incidents arising from the struggle for the crown prince position in the capital.

The emperor had reigned for decades and fathered over ten sons, but he lived too long, and his sons did not all inherit his longevity. Additionally, some were disinherited, demoted, executed, or given away in adoption. Now, not a single direct son remained.

However, although there were no sons left, there were still plenty of grandsons born to those sons.

Although the Thirteenth Prince was dead, his political faction remained intact, and he had a living son. Consequently, his supporters logically regarded the son as the legitimate successor to the throne.

But at this time, the descendants of other princes who had been forced out of the succession struggle for various reasons in the past began to emerge. Although they individually held little power, together they posed a significant force that the Thirteenth Prince's supporters could not ignore.

For a time, the court became lively again with the dispute over the crown prince. Some argued that the son of the eldest prince should inherit, as the eldest prince was the firstborn. Others argued that the son of the second prince held the strongest claim, as the second prince had been the legitimate firstborn son of the empress. There were also those who advocated for the son of the former crown prince, Xiao Yanchu, to inherit, since the former crown prince had been the only officially designated heir by the emperor.

Of course, there were also many proposals to advocate for the enthronement of the Thirteenth Prince's son. However, the child's extreme youth made him incapable of effectively exercising power. Coupled with the joint suppression from other factions, the Thirteenth Prince's original supporters gradually disintegrated, and eventually, they were the first to be squeezed out of the crown prince contention.

The Young Master Becomes a Wife Chapter 78 Part 3

Jiang Chenghan lowered his head and whispered a few sentences into Yan Jingshu's ear.

Yan Jingshu immediately widened his eyes slightly, extremely shocked, but he remembered to cover his mouth and whisper, "This... this is too risky. After all, the Thirteenth Prince is the only prince now, and he has been in the court for many years, his position long solidified. How can it be so easily..."

Yan Jingshu didn't finish the latter part of his sentence, but Jiang Chenghan understood his meaning. He patted his shoulder reassuringly and said, "Extraordinary times call for extraordinary measures. Don't worry, Uncle, the Prince of Chuxiang, and I have already planned everything thoroughly. Nothing will go wrong."

Although Jiang Chenghan said this, Yan Jingshu still found it difficult to be completely at ease until the matter was settled. After lowering his gaze for a moment, he still said, "Given the turbulent times now, if I reject the matchmaker this time, I'm afraid the Thirteenth Prince will be completely enraged. Who knows what else he might do. Moreover, the matchmaker came to our door with great fanfare, who knows how much gossip will spread in the capital. I was thinking, why not use preparing for the imperial exams and needing to study hard as an excuse for Jiajia to stay at the Commandery Prince of Rui's residence for this period. With the protection of the Prince of Chuxiang and the Commandery Prince of Rui, presumably the Thirteenth Prince wouldn't dare to do anything again."

If this could put Yan Jingshu's mind at ease, Jiang Chenghan naturally had no objection.

After settling this matter, Yan Jingshu went to the main hall to see that Matchmaker Zhao, while Jiang Chenghan went to the inner quarters to find Jiang Rongjia.

Now that the old emperor was critically ill, Xiao Yanchu, who had been promoted another rank to Prince, needed to enter the palace daily to attend to the emperor. Although Jiang Rongjia still went to the Commandery Prince of Rui's residence every day to take lessons from Xie Huan, today Jiang Chenghan was on his day off, so he also asked for a day off to spend more time with his father.

Since Jiang Chenghan was with Yan Jingshu, he went to his younger brother Jiang Rongkang's courtyard to check on his studies.

Unlike Jiang Rongjia's courtyard, Jiang Rongkang's courtyard didn't have many elegant landscapes. There was only a very lush and tall parasol tree standing under the window. Other than that, there was a large flat grassy area, with the center patch faintly revealing brown earth, clearly from frequent trampling. Around the grassy area stood several rows of various weapons, stone locks, sandbags, and other such items.

As soon as he entered the courtyard, Jiang Chenghan saw the two youths sitting at the stone table under the parasol tree by the window. They were about the same height and had similar builds.

One was wearing a moon-white brocade robe, with features as beautiful as a painting, elegant and delicate, his clear, bright eyes revealing the unique brightness and purity of a youth. The other had a slightly darker complexion, handsome and vibrant, full of energy, wearing close-fitting short clothes that showed off his agile and flexible figure.

These two were naturally Jiang Rongjia and Jiang Rongkang.

At the moment, Jiang Rongjia was holding a few sheets of paper, reading them. But as he read, his brows furrowed, his refined and fair little face full of seriousness. Seeing this, Jiang Rongkang, beside him, couldn't help but look somewhat guilty.

"What are you two doing?" Jiang Chenghan said with a laugh.

"Father!" "Father!" The brothers looked over at the same time and spoke.

Jiang Chenghan walked to the stone table. Both brothers had stood up. Jiang Rongkang even diligently helped Jiang Chenghan sit down on the stone stool and hurriedly poured him a cup of tea, looking very ingratiating.

Jiang Chenghan ignored him. He turned and pulled Jiang Rongjia to sit beside him, smiling as he said, "What's wrong? Who made our Jiajia angry? Tell me, and I'll go hit him."

Even if Jiang Rongjia was really angry, being coaxed like a child by Jiang Chenghan like this, his anger couldn't surface. Seeing Jiang Rongkang beside him making faces at him, bowing and thanking him, he ultimately didn't reveal that Jiang Rongkang had someone else do his homework for him. He just gave him a look that said they would settle this later, then folded the papers in his hand and put them away.

Then he said to Jiang Chenghan, "It's nothing. I was just telling Kang'er about something I saw on the street. It's not a big deal. Father, why are you here? Where's Dad?"

The brothers had their own little secrets. Jiang Chenghan knew but didn't press further. When Jiang Rongjia asked about Yan Jingshu, he said, "The Thirteenth Prince sent a matchmaker to propose marriage. Your dad is in the front dealing with that person."

Hearing this, Jiang Rongjia couldn't help but frown, his face showing disgust. Having accompanied the Commandery Prince of Rui for many years, he had some interactions with imperial relatives like the Thirteenth Prince and had long known about the Thirteenth Prince's interest in him. It was just that multiple rejections had been useless, and he was still being pestered.

Jiang Rongkang, unaware of outside matters, was very confused upon hearing this and asked foolishly, "Propose marriage? Propose to whom?" Their family didn't have any girls to marry off!

Now wasn't the time to explain things to Jiang Rongkang. Seeing Jiang Rongjia's somber expression, Jiang Chenghan comforted him in a gentle voice, "Don't worry, Father's here. Nothing will happen..."

Jiang Rongkang suddenly widened his eyes and followed Jiang Chenghan's gaze to Jiang Rongjia, vaguely understanding something.

Jiang Chenghan continued, "The Thirteenth Prince is inherently stubborn and believes himself to be the absolute authority. Having had his marriage proposal rejected multiple times, he must be extremely dissatisfied and is likely to be driven to desperate measures, potentially doing something to you. Today, pack your things and move into Prince Rui's residence tomorrow to lay low for a while. Once Father resolves this matter, I will bring you back home."

"The Thirteenth Prince!" Before Jiang Rongjia could say anything, Jiang Rongkang, who had just understood the situation, exploded. He jumped up, grabbed the black-gold spear nearby, and charged outside.

"Stop right there!" Jiang Chenghan knew exactly what he intended to do and shouted sternly to stop him.

Although Jiang Rongkang looked about the same age as Jiang Rongjia, he was actually two years younger, just fourteen now. His temperament was far less steady than Jiang Rongjia's, and due to his martial arts training, he was even more prone to impulsiveness and anger.

Jiang Chenghan knew his second son's personality well. While Jiang Rongkang's nature was innate and would require long-term tempering in the future, he didn't have that time right now.

He said, "Kang'er, you go pack your things too. Tomorrow, go with your older brother to stay at Prince Rui's residence. Protect your brother well, do you understand?"

At first, Jiang Rongkang was reluctant.

Rather than hiding in Prince Rui's residence, he would prefer to directly take his spear and stab that audacious person who dared to covet his brother, ending it once and for all so his brother would have no more worries. But Jiang Chenghan said he wanted him to protect Jiang Rongjia, which made him hesitate.

In the end, he turned back to his room to pack his things. After the initial fury subsided, calmness and composure returned to his mind. He knew his father would absolutely not let him go stab the Thirteenth Prince to death, so it was better to follow his brother.

If the Thirteenth Prince really tried to secretly attack his brother, he could always stab him to death then.

The Young Master Becomes a Wife Chapter 78 Part 2

Ten years had passed, yet neither of them bore many traces left by the years.

Jiang Chenghan remained as handsome and upright as ever, only his brow now carried a more steady and weighty presence. Because of his high position, he had gained an extraordinary and imposing aura that made people not dare to look down on him.

Yan Jingshu, on the other hand, seemed to be more favored by the passage of time than Jiang Chenghan. It was as if time had stood still on him—his delicate eyebrows, rosy lips, and gentle, smiling eyes remained peaceful and serene, exactly as they were when the two first married, a sight Jiang Chenghan could never get enough of, without the slightest change.

Yan Jingshu was writing with serious concentration. It wasn't until he had filled an entire page with characters that he straightened up, let out a soft sigh, and then turned to look at Jiang Chenghan beside him. He met Jiang Chenghan's eyes, which had been watching him all along, and couldn't help but smile slightly.

Just as he was about to say something, suddenly a maid announced her presence from outside the door.

Yan Jingshu and Jiang Chenghan exchanged a glance, both somewhat puzzled by the interruption. When Yan Jingshu was restoring ancient texts, he required complete quiet and could not be disturbed casually, so under normal circumstances, the servants would not come to report matters at this time. It seemed now that something major must have happened for them to come at this moment.

"What is it? Come in and speak," Yan Jingshu said, putting down his brush and walking toward the outer hall.

Jiang Chenghan also put down the ink stick and followed Yan Jingshu out of the study.

"Master, Furen, the official matchmaker Zhao Bingren has come with gifts requesting an audience. She says she is sent by the Thirteenth Prince to seek the hand of the young master for... for the position of secondary consort."

After the maid finished speaking, the room fell into silence. The smiles that had been on Jiang Chenghan and Yan Jingshu's faces vanished, replaced by dark expressions, and neither spoke a word.

A good long while passed. It wasn't until the maid, having waited without any instructions, timidly raised her head to look that Jiang Chenghan finally said in a deep voice, "...Furen and I understand. Have someone properly entertain this Matchmaker Zhao. Furen and I will go to see her shortly."

"Yes," the maid hurriedly nodded, bowed, and withdrew.

"The Thirteenth Prince..." Yan Jingshu's beautiful eyebrows had long been furrowed, his face full of anger. Then, unable to suppress the fury in his heart any longer, he slammed his palm heavily on the table and said with resentment, "We've already refused several times. Now he actually sends a matchmaker to our door with great fanfare and gifts. Does he intend to force us?"

Jiang Rongjia was now sixteen, the age to discuss marriage. Although he was a shuang'er, his character, appearance, talent, family background, and bearing were all outstanding in the capital. Therefore, over the past two years, there had been no shortage of those wishing to propose marriage, including many from prominent families.

However, Yan Jingshu knew that Jiang Chenghan hoped Jiang Rongjia would marry after twenty. Although he didn't know why, after asking Jiang Rongjia's opinion and finding he agreed with Jiang Chenghan's idea, he had let this intention be known.

The flowering period of a young girl was precious, and few could wait four years, let alone since Yan Jingshu had no intention of securing a match for Jiang Rongjia in advance. Although it was a pity, they had no choice but to give up.

However, while some made clean breaks, others persisted and refused to let the matter drop. Among them, the one Yan Jingshu disliked the most was the Thirteenth Prince's pursuit. But unlike other families seeking marriages for their own or their friends' daughters, the Thirteenth Prince had taken a liking to Jiang Rongjia and wanted to take him as a secondary consort.

The Thirteenth Prince had initially appeared to be a decent man. However, after the Tenth and Fourteenth Princes encountered misfortunes in quick succession, as the only remaining prince, believing the throne was firmly within his grasp, he stopped hiding and gradually revealed his true nature.

Within the walls of his princely residence, countless absurd and outrageous incidents were rumored to have taken place. The stories were so widespread that even Yan Jingshu, who seldom ventured beyond his own home, had heard numerous accounts of these scandals.

Originally, these matters had nothing to do with them. Who would have thought the Thirteenth Prince would set his sights on the Jiang residence, on Jiang Rongjia's head?

Although Yan Jingshu had chosen to marry himself, he had no intention of compelling Jiang Rongjia to follow the same path—particularly not into a union with someone of the Thirteenth Prince's character. Furthermore, Jiang Rongjia had personally expressed no desire to marry. Thus, they had refused from the very beginning.

But the Thirteenth Prince had never given up. After that, whether through the Duke of Anguo's residence, the Commandery Prince of Rui's residence, or even directly approaching Jiang Chenghan, he had caused Yan Jingshu and Jiang Chenghan endless annoyance.

And today, the Thirteenth Prince actually directly dispatched a matchmaker with gifts to their door, thoroughly angering Yan Jingshu and Jiang Chenghan.

Jiang Chenghan's face darkened, his expression becoming as impenetrable and still as deep water. But seeing Yan Jingshu, in his anger, had actually slapped the table hard, he quickly stood up and walked to his side, taking his hand. Seeing the palm already bright red, he couldn't help but frown. While gently rubbing it for him, he said, "Don't be too angry, be careful of harming your health. Don't worry too much about this matter. I knew long ago that the Thirteenth Prince would not give up easily. I have discussed this with Uncle and the Prince of Chuxiang, and we already have a plan to deal with it. We will absolutely not let that Thirteenth Prince have his way. In a moment, you can just send that matchmaker away directly. There's no need to worry about anything."

Yan Jingshu listened, and his expression softened somewhat, but he still wore a slightly worried frown. "The Emperor is seriously ill. The Thirteenth Prince is now the only prince and has been ordered to supervise the state affairs. Although he hasn't been named Crown Prince, he already holds the substance of the heir apparent. If we offend him, and he ascends to become Emperor, what should we do then?"

The current Emperor was advanced in years, already in the twilight of his life. He had been bedridden and ill for a long time, powerless to handle court affairs. As a member of the Inspectorate, Jiang Chenghan knew this all too clearly. This was also the reason the Thirteenth Prince was so arrogant now.

Not to mention that the Thirteenth Prince was still just a prince—even if he were to ascend the throne and become emperor in the future, if he wanted to lay a hand on his child, he would have had to ask whether he agreed or not. Having spent decades between the border and the capital, fighting desperately, all he sought was to protect his family's lifelong health and safety. If he couldn't even do that, then he would have lived all these years in vain.

The Young Master Becomes a Wife Chapter 78 Part 1

Chapter 78: Ten Years

Although Jiang Chenghan and Yan Jingshu both agreed, Xiao Yanchu could not take Jiajia away immediately. Preparations and arrangements still needed to be made at the Commandery Prince of Rui's residence. Furthermore, this matter needed to be reported to Xie Huan and the Prince of Chuxiang.

However, these matters did not require Jiang Chenghan and Yan Jingshu to be involved. Xie Huan was now Xiao Yanchu's teacher, and the Commandery Prince of Rui's residence was next door to the Prince of Chuxiang's mansion, so it was left to Xiao Yanchu to handle everything.

Jiang Chenghan and Yan Jingshu stayed at home to arrange the attendants and items Jiajia would take with him. Although he would return home every day, and surely everything would be prepared for Jiajia at the Commandery Prince of Rui's residence, as parents, they could not do nothing.

By the time everything was ready, three days had passed.

Regarding Jiajia entering the Commandery Prince of Rui's residence to serve as Xiao Yanchu's study companion, both fathers, Jiang Chenghan and Yan Jingshu, had agreed. Xie Huan, who would be able to teach Jiajia, was also happy and naturally did not object. As for the Prince of Chuxiang...

When Xiao Yanchu informed him of the matter, he stared at Xiao Yanchu for quite a while, but ultimately still nodded, allowing Xiao Yanchu to fulfill his wish and bring the child from the Jiang family into the Commandery Prince of Rui's residence.

Jiajia was now six years old and had begun his elementary education three years prior. Because Yan Jingshu was there, they had not hired a private tutor—Yan Jingshu had personally taught him all along. Now that the child was at the Commandery Prince of Rui's residence under Xie Huan's care and instruction, Yan Jingshu naturally had no worries. It was just that with much less to do suddenly, having free time left him feeling somewhat at a loss.

Fortunately, there was still the little one, Kangkang, at home. His playful noise and mischief prevented Yan Jingshu from feeling too lonely.

If the happiest person about Jiajia entering the Commandery Prince of Rui's residence was Xiao Yanchu, then Mu Chongyan was the second happiest.

Although Yan Jingshu and Xie Huan no longer rejected him, neither was willing to make their true relationship public, unwilling to let the calm life they had now be disturbed again. Because of this, Mu Chongyan could not visit the Jiang family to see Yan Jingshu and the two children whenever he wished.

But now that Jiajia was at the Commandery Prince of Rui's residence, Mu Chongyan could see his grandson almost every day.

Although Mu Chongyan was noble and held a high position, he could not maintain any airs in front of his own grandson. He even began neglecting his official duties. After submitting a memorial requesting sick leave, he idled away his days at the Commandery Prince of Rui's residence.

While Xie Huan taught Jiajia and Xiao Yanchu, he would sit in on the lessons. During leisure time, he would either play chess with Xie Huan, have fun with Jiajia, or instruct Xiao Yanchu in martial arts. He was utterly comfortable and at ease, which actually made Jiang Chenghan quite envious.

Although Mu Chongyan had resigned from his post to 'recuperate', the Inspectorate he led had not been handed over to anyone else by the Emperor. As a blade and a shield that could be held directly in hand, the Emperor trusted no one but Mu Chongyan.

Therefore, even though Mu Chongyan was no longer at the Inspectorate, he still managed its affairs. It was just hard on subordinates like Jiang Chenghan, who, besides handling the duties assigned by the office, had to run back and forth between the Inspectorate and the Prince of Chuxiang's mansion every day.

Now having a son, a grandson, and his beloved by his side, Mu Chongyan felt completely satisfied in this life. Although the Emperor was unwilling to let him go, he himself had slowly begun training subordinates and preparing to delegate power.

As his son-in-law, Mu Chongyan naturally hoped Jiang Chenghan could succeed him in his position, which would benefit Yan Jingshu and the two children in the future.

However, even so, Mu Chongyan would not show favoritism or unfairly assist Jiang Chenghan. On the contrary, he assigned Jiang Chenghan many important tasks, intending to temper and train him.

Fortunately, Jiang Chenghan himself had sufficient ability and grew stronger when faced with challenges. Over the years, his accumulated merits allowed him to steadily rise step by step, eventually becoming the Deputy Chief Commander of the Inspectorate, second only to Mu Chongyan.

Furthermore, because he was not a native of the capital, and although he had some connections with the Duke of Anguo's residence and the Commandery Prince of Rui's residence, the Duke of Anguo had already retired from office. The current heir to the Duke of Anguo was still young, so it could be said that the Duke's residence could not offer Jiang Chenghan much assistance in the court. As for the Commandery Prince of Rui's residence, as the orphan of the deceased former Crown Prince, although the Emperor pitied Xiao Yanchu and often gave him preferential treatment, Xiao Yanchu was the son of a commoner concubine, had no maternal family power to rely on, and had suffered from a speech impediment since childhood, making communication difficult.

For these reasons, although he appeared noble, he essentially had no foundation within the court and naturally would not form a faction with Jiang Chenghan.

After various considerations, although the Emperor did not issue an explicit decree, Jiang Chenghan learned from Mu Chongyan, who had already heard the Emperor's intention, that the Emperor was very satisfied with Jiang Chenghan. Barring any unforeseen circumstances, Jiang Chenghan would eventually succeed Mu Chongyan to the position of Chief Commander.

But Jiang Chenghan was still somewhat young and might not be able to suppress those below him or command respect, so he needed a few more years of tempering.

Spring passed and autumn came, time flew like a white steed flashing past a crack. It seemed like in the blink of an eye, ten years had already slipped away.

The capital was as prosperous and flourishing as ever. Taibai Street in the west of the capital, being an area where the nobility gathered with few merchants or peddlers, appeared much quieter and more solemn. The residence of the newly appointed Chief Commander of the Inspectorate, Jiang Chenghan, was also located here.

Inside the residence, taking advantage of a rare day of rest, Jiang Chenghan was in the study helping Yan Jingshu restore books.

It was called a study, but it was originally an elegant and exquisitely built embroidered tower in the rear courtyard of the residence. Since no one lived in it and it was very close to the Hanlan Courtyard where Jiang Chenghan and Yan Jingshu resided, it was converted into Yan Jingshu's study, serving as his usual place for reading and book restoration.
[绣楼 (xiùlóu): lit. embroidered tower; fig. a traditionally adorned tower or room in a wealthy household where unmarried young women (daughters) lived in seclusion.]

Back when Yan Jingshu studied under his mentor at the Mushan Academy, he had learned the skill of book restoration. After marrying Jiang Chenghan, he did not abandon this skill but instead had more time to refine his technique.

Over the years, not only had his craftsmanship become increasingly exquisite and advanced, but as his reputation gradually spread, people often came to his door holding accidentally damaged books, paintings, or calligraphy copies seeking his help. He was highly regarded and had clearly attained master status.

Book restoration was delicate work. Although Jiang Chenghan was a rough man, he could still grind ink and cut paper for Yan Jingshu.

One of them bent over the desk carefully retracing characters, while the other stood nearby gently grinding fine ink. Within the quiet stillness, a uniquely warm and peaceful atmosphere lingered.

Xie Huan wanted to break free from Mu Chongyan, but Mu Chongyan's two arms were like cast iron, firmly restraining him around the waist, making him unable to move.

Xie Huan's expression gradually turned cold. He reached out to grab the pot of delicate ornamental greens from the flower stand in front of the couch, but at that moment, Mu Chongyan beneath him uttered words like a dreamy murmur: "...I won't give up on you, never, even if I die. You are mine, you are my child's father. Even if I die in the future, I want to be buried with you, buried together, buried together..."

His voice gradually faded until it disappeared. Xie Huan's outstretched hand, reaching for the pot, halted mid-air. After a long moment, he withdrew his hand, pulled away Mu Chongyan's arms which had gone limp in sleep, and straightened up.

Looking down at Mu Chongyan's sleeping face on the couch, Xie Huan's lips moved silently, forming three words—"I know..."

After leaving the residence of the Prince of Chuxiang, Jiang Chenghan's family and Xiao Yanchu shared the same path for a while before they were supposed to part ways. However, Xiao Yanchu indicated that he had something to discuss with Jiang Chenghan and Yan Jingshu, so he accompanied them to the Jiang family.

Jiajia had the habit of taking afternoon naps, so upon arriving home, Jiang Chenghan carried him back to his room to rest. Yan Jingshu took Xiao Yanchu to the main hall to talk.

After Jiang Chenghan had settled Jiajia and returned to the main hall, Xiao Yanchu rose to his feet. He approached Jiang Chenghan and Yan Jingshu, then offered them a deep, formal bow. Meeting their surprised gazes, he said with solemn sincerity: "Uncle Jiang, Uncle Yan, I have an impertinent request that I hope you both will agree to. I would like Jiajia to become my study companion. You can rest assured, I will take good care of Jiajia and will not let him suffer any grievance."

Not expecting Xiao Yanchu to make such a request, Jiang Chenghan and Yan Jingshu looked at each other, unsure how to respond to Xiao Yanchu.

If they weren't clear about Xiao Yanchu's character, they might have thought that he made this request because of the time before he regained his status when he was Jiajia's playmate in Ningcheng.

Even so, Jiajia was only six years old. Even if he were under their watchful eyes every day, Jiang Chenghan and Yan Jingshu would not be entirely at ease, let alone if he were to leave home alone for another place. Moreover, Jiajia was a shuang'er. When he was younger, it didn't matter, but now that he was growing up day by day, some concerns had to be considered.

Without needing to say anything, just a single glance between them was all it took for Jiang Chenghan and Yan Jingshu to reach a mutual understanding. However, before they could politely decline Xiao Yanchu's request, Jiajia—who was supposed to be asleep in his room—suddenly ran into the hall clutching something.

"Brother Moyan, you haven't left yet? That's great." Jiajia, still dressed in his sleeping robes, burst into the room. The moment he saw Xiao Yanchu, his face brightened and he darted directly toward him.

He thrust the object in his hand toward Xiao Yanchu and announced, "Brother Moyan, this is the portrait I promised you. I almost forgot to give it to you."

"You finished it so quickly? Jiajia, you're amazing." Xiao Yanchu praised as he took the scroll and opened it. On the paper was a portrait of himself. Although the brushstrokes were still somewhat unrefined, the portrait was undeniably a recognizable likeness of him.

"Jiajia, come here and put on some proper clothes," Yan Jingshu called out, his tone a mixture of fondness and gentle admonishment.

Jiajia had remembered his promise just as he was drifting off to sleep. Fearing that Xiao Yanchu had already left, so he got up in a hurry, didn't even bother to dress properly, found the finished painting and dashing from his room.

Yan Jingshu frowned inwardly at his son's impulsiveness, but he refrained from any outward scolding in front of their guest. Instead, he simply took the outer robes from the flustered maid who had followed Jiajia into the hall and helped him put them on.

Jiang Chenghan watched as Jiajia, even while Yan Jingshu was helping him get dressed, still looked up with a smiling face towards Xiao Yanchu. After thinking for a moment, he asked Jiajia: "Jiajia, would you like to be able to study with your Brother Moyan every day?"

Jiajia turned his head to look at Jiang Chenghan, tilted his head, thought for a moment, and then asked: "Like when Brother Moyan was still at our house before?"

Jiang Chenghan shook his head and said: "It's different. It wouldn't be at our house, but at Brother Moyan's house. Would you be willing?"

Jiajia’s small mouth fell open. He blinked, his gaze shifting uncertainly between Jiang Chenghan and Yan Jingshu before turning to Xiao Yanchu, who watched him with hopeful anticipation. He wrestled with the dilemma internally, his small brow furrowing in thought before he finally asked: "I want to study and play with Brother Moyan, but I also want to stay with Dad, Father, and my little brother. Can’t we all just be together?"

Hearing this answer, Jiang Chenghan was not surprised. Although he didn't want to disappoint Jiajia, he couldn't say the word 'yes'.

Just as Jiang Chenghan was about to say something else, Xiao Yanchu suddenly spoke up: "Of course, we can!"

Jiang Chenghan, Yan Jingshu, and Jiajia immediately looked at him.

Xiao Yanchu stepped closer and knelt down so his eyes were level with Jiajia’s. A warm, reassuring smile softened his features as he said: "From now on, I will come to pick you up at half-past Chenshi (7:30 AM) every day to go to the commandery prince's residence. We can read, paint, and play together. Then, in the afternoon at Shenshi (3:00 PM), I will bring you back home. That way, you can spend your days with me, Uncle Jiang, Uncle Yan, and Kangkang every day. How does that sound?"

"Okay!" Jiajia, hearing that he could be with everyone every day, immediately agreed happily.

"Uncle Jiang, Uncle Yan..." Xiao Yanchu then looked towards Jiang Chenghan and Yan Jingshu. Even though Jiajia was willing, his two fathers still needed to agree.

Yan Jingshu's heart had already softened upon hearing that Xiao Yanchu was willing to trouble himself to pick up and drop off Jiajia every day, meaning Jiajia wouldn't need to stay overnight at the commandery prince's residence. Seeing Jiajia looking at him expectantly, he found it hard to refuse.

He thought about how Xie Huan was also at the Commandery Prince of Rui's residence, plus the Prince of Chuxiang who showed up uninvited every day by scaling the wall. With them keeping an eye on things, it wouldn't be much different from himself and Jiang Chenghan.

Thinking this, Yan Jingshu turned to look at Jiang Chenghan. Without needing to say anything, a single exchanged glance was enough for them to understand each other.

Knowing that Jiang Chenghan felt the same way, Yan Jingshu smiled and, under the expectant gazes of Jiajia and Xiao Yanchu, finally nodded.
