Jiang Chenghan’s heart skipped a beat, his gaze snapping to Xie Huan—had Xie Huan revealed the truth about Yan Jingshu’s origins?
But the next moment, he realized he was mistaken.
Spotting Jiang Chenghan at the door, Yan Jingshu eagerly called out, "Chenghan, you’re back just in time! Uncle says he plans to establish a school in Ningcheng and won’t be leaving again anytime soon."
Though his assumption had been wrong, Jiang Chenghan showed no sign of it, instead feigning pleasant surprise. "Really? That’s wonderful news."
Personally, he didn’t mind either way, but seeing Yan Jingshu so happy made him happy too.
Xie Huan glanced at Jiang Chenghan. He hadn’t forgotten that it was Jiang Chenghan’s words that first made him suspect Yan Jingshu’s true parentage—and that Jiang Chenghan had entrusted him with investigating the matter. But now, he feared he couldn’t fulfill Jiang Chenghan’s hopes.
Suppressing the turmoil in his heart, Xie Huan lowered his gaze, concealing his conflicted emotions.
Though unaware of Xie Huan’s thoughts, Jiang Chenghan sensed that since Xie Huan hadn’t mentioned Yan Jingshu’s origins to anyone, there was likely a reason. Still, certain things needed to be clarified.
After a brief pause, Jiang Chenghan smiled at Xie Huan. "Uncle, since you’ve just arrived in Ningcheng, you probably aren’t familiar with the city. If you’re starting a school, you’ll need a suitable property. Why not take advantage of the remaining daylight and the cool weather to let me show you around? We can scout for locations."
Xie Huan looked at Jiang Chenghan, seeming to understand his intentions. After a moment’s hesitation, he nodded. "Very well."
Yan Jingshu also hoped the school could be established quickly, ensuring Xie Huan wouldn’t leave again. Relieved, he fully supported Jiang Chenghan’s suggestion and even urged them not to rush back, suggesting they dine out if they grew tired.
Though Jiang Chenghan had ulterior motives, he genuinely intended to help Xie Huan find a property. Instead of wandering aimlessly, he took Xie Huan directly to the yahang, asking the agent to assist in finding a suitable residence based on Xie Huan’s requirements.
After leaving the yahang, Jiang Chenghan said to Xie Huan, "Uncle, there’s a restaurant ahead with a chef whose skills are excellent—Jingshu loves their dishes. Would you like to try it?"
Xie Huan glanced at Jiang Chenghan. He wanted to say that Yan Jingshu didn’t need to be used as bait—he would have gone regardless. But hearing Jiang Chenghan’s words, he couldn’t help feeling a flicker of anticipation. He had missed everything about Yan Jingshu’s life; now, even reclaiming a tiny fragment of it was precious.
Jiang Chenghan deliberately chose a secluded private room and ordered dishes according to Yan Jingshu’s tastes. While waiting for the food, he didn’t delay any further and directly addressed his true purpose for this outing.
"Uncle, regarding Jingshu’s origins… have you uncovered anything?"
Though he had anticipated this question, hearing it still made Xie Huan’s heart tremble. His hands clenched tightly under the table, but under Jiang Chenghan’s gaze, he forced himself to remain composed. Slowly, he shook his head. "I investigated, but found nothing amiss. Jingshu’s background is exactly as my father described. Because my sister lost her child and feared she couldn’t answer to her husband’s family, she bought an infant who had been abandoned at birth and passed him off as the Yan family’s child. There are no hidden circumstances."
Jiang Chenghan listened quietly, his expression unreadable.
He had heard Yan Jingshu speak of Xie Huan before—a fellow shuang'er who was devoted to poetry and travel. Before the age of twenty, Xie Huan had left home to wander, and now, nearly two decades later, remained unmarried and childless.
When Jiang Chenghan first suspected Xie Huan might be Yan Jingshu’s biological father, his lifelong solitude no longer seemed strange. Though shuang'er could marry or take a wife, they only had one choice in their lifetime—a shuang'er who took a fulang role could no longer impregnate a woman or another shuang'er, and one who took a wife would lose the ability to conceive after consummation.
If Xie Huan had indeed given birth to Yan Jingshu nineteen years ago, he naturally couldn’t have taken a wife afterward. But if he had been pregnant, he should have married the person responsible—yet instead, he had left alone and stayed away for nearly twenty years.
Jiang Chenghan couldn’t guess how Xie Huan had conceived Yan Jingshu, but seeing his solitary suffering and his restraint in not claiming his own flesh and blood, it was clear the past held painful memories.
He had no intention of reopening Xie Huan’s wounds. His persistence in uncovering Yan Jingshu’s origins stemmed from concern—if the truth ever emerged unexpectedly, it might hurt Yan Jingshu. He wanted to prepare for that possibility.
But now that Xie Huan refused to acknowledge Yan Jingshu and wouldn’t reveal the truth, Jiang Chenghan couldn’t force him. Unable to leave Ningcheng to investigate himself, he had to let the matter rest for now. Still, Xie Huan’s return and decision to stay in Ningcheng were enough for Jiang Chenghan to confirm his suspicions.
Though he hadn’t achieved his full objective, he had at least found one of Yan Jingshu’s biological parents—no small consolation.
With that thought, Jiang Chenghan smiled slightly. "If that’s the case, then it’s fine. I was only worried that if there were hidden complications regarding Jingshu’s origins, it might cause trouble in the future, which would be bad for him. Now that you’ve said this, I can rest easy."
Xie Huan frowned slightly, as if surprised by Jiang Chenghan’s response. After a pause, he said, "...Don’t worry. Nothing will come of it."
His tone was firm. Jiang Chenghan didn’t know how Xie Huan could be so certain, but he didn’t press further. He simply smiled. "That’s good."
With everything said, the private room door was knocked open as the waiter brought their food. Jiang Chenghan called for him to enter. After that, he and Xie Huan spoke no more of the matter. Once they finished eating, they returned home.
