Lingchuan City wasn’t far from the capital, just an hour’s drive away.
Without wasting words or letting He Chen engage in small talk with others, Mu Lichuan headed straight for the mountain to inspect the ancestral graves.
The gravesite was well-chosen, he had studied some feng shui principles.
Feng shui often spoke of "entering the mountains to seek the water’s mouth, ascending the burial site to observe the mingtang." In other words, when selecting a yin dwelling (grave), one had to consider where the water came from and where it went, paying special attention to the mingtang water before the burial site.
[Mingtang water (明堂水): the open space or water feature in front of a gravesite or building in feng shui, crucial for gathering positive energy (qi) and influencing wealth and fortune for descendants.]
The source of the water was called the "Heaven’s Gate." If the origin of the water was invisible to the eye, it was termed "Heaven’s Gate open." The exit of the water was called the "Earth’s Door." If the water’s departure was unseen, it was called "Earth’s Door closed."
The depth of the water also mattered - deep water signified great wealth, while shallow water meant modest wealth. The water mouth was like the front gate of a home. If the water flowed between two towering mountains, it was called "two mountains clamping a single waterway." Water represented wealth, and being held between two mountains symbolized a reluctance to let riches flow away, such a gravesite was considered highly auspicious, ensuring future generations’ prosperity.
The He family’s location had a flowing water source and even a large lake, indicating considerable wealth among their descendants.
It should have been an excellent yin dwelling, yet Mu Lichuan could sense an eerie chill in the air—clearly, the He family’s feng shui had been sabotaged.
"This mountain’s placement is excellent, and the water flow is good, but..." Noticing He Chen’s nervous expression, Mu Lichuan paused before continuing, "it seems someone has deliberately damaged it."
After surveying the area, Mu Lichuan said, "I’ll walk around over there. If I find something, may I dig?" He wasn’t deeply versed in feng shui, but disturbing a family’s graves required permission.
He Chen was taken aback. "Dig up the ancestral grave?"
"It might be necessary. I’m asking you, Mr. He, do you trust me or not?" Mu Lichuan’s clear eyes shone with determination.
If the man before him didn’t believe him, there was no point in proceeding.
Remembering the protective talisman the youth had given him, He Chen gritted his teeth and said firmly, "Young Master Mu, do whatever you need to." He believed his ancestors wouldn’t blame him.
This gravesite had been chosen by a renowned feng shui master at his father’s request and had remained untouched since. But in recent years, due to his father’s death and his own belief in science, he hadn’t even visited to pay respects.
"Mm." Without further explanation, Mu Lichuan walked a short distance before stopping at an unusual spot.
Yuan Dacheng didn’t move recklessly, this was someone else’s ancestral grave, and as an outsider, it wasn’t his place. He and He Chen quickly followed when they saw Mu Lichuan halt.
Mu Lichuan took out a small shovel and began digging where the yin energy was strongest. He had no idea what lay beneath.
"Come help, this shovel’s too small." Mu Lichuan’s gaze was sharp. They had brought tools for this purpose.
He Chen quickly fetched a hoe and, under the youth’s direction, began digging carefully.
"Stop, let me." Mu Lichuan eyed the half-meter-deep hole and took over. Though it was broad daylight, Yuan Dacheng felt an unnatural coldness, rubbing his arms unconsciously.
Mu Lichuan motioned for them to step back and dug deeper, soon uncovering an animal’s corpse.
The creature was unfamiliar - somewhat cat-like, but with a red rope tied around it and a swollen belly, clearly pregnant. The sight was horrifying.
He Chen and Yuan Dacheng paled. "What... what is this? What’s going on?" The area had some sparse grass, but it was easy to miss unless one looked closely.
"It’s what’s ruining your feng shui." Mu Lichuan didn’t elaborate. Instead, he channeled his soul energy to purify the resentful aura surrounding the creature.
While others might have struggled, his golden light protection and soul energy made dispelling the vengeful spirits’ energy relatively easy.
Though the creature resembled a cat, it seemed hybridized, which was a chilling testament of the perpetrator’s cruelty. Had it been a human... the He family would likely have been wiped out by now.
"You saw it yourself earlier, your villa was haunted because someone wanted to destroy your family completely." Mu Lichuan’s voice was calm, though his face was pale from exertion.
He Chen hurried to support him. "Young Master Mu, you..." He had clearly seen the youth pause over the corpse earlier.
"It’s resolved. The resentment clinging to the animal’s body is gone. Bury it properly." Mu Lichuan stressed, "Good deeds bring good rewards."
