Chapter 9: Campus Confession
Mu Lichuan looked at him as if he were an idiot. "You’re just realizing this now?" Before this person could even grow into a threat, he would crush him utterly. Let’s see how he could possibly turn the tables then.
Mu Xiaolin glared at Mu Lichuan with gritted teeth, but the latter simply got into the car and leaned out the window. "If you’re not getting in, then stay here. I don’t have time to waste, I need to get to school."
He knew that if Mu Xiaolin tested as a single-spiritual-root genius, his treatment in the family would completely change. So before that could happen, he had to "deal with" him. But given his father’s temperament, it wouldn’t be easy.
Mu Xiaolin’s heart burned with fury, but even more so with resentment. After all, he was still young, lacking Mu Lichuan’s iron will. And deep down, he even felt a hint of inferiority.
The car ride was silent, save for Mu Xiaolin’s heavy breathing.
"Elder Brother, I know my mother and I have disrupted your and Auntie’s lives. But this wasn’t something I could choose. Can you forgive me?" Mu Xiaolin understood that he couldn’t rely on his father now, he had to find his own way.
Mu Lichuan, who had been lost in thought about future plans, turned his head at the sound of his voice. "There’s no grudge between us. What’s there to forgive?" He knew full well that the driver was his father’s man. If any further conflict between them surfaced, who knew what his father might do?
Right now, Mu Lichuan felt he had too few resources at his disposal. Aside from petty annoyances, he couldn’t take real action. Not when his every move was likely being watched.
"You—!" Mu Xiaolin hadn’t expected him to switch attitudes so quickly.
Mu Lichuan smiled. "Little Brother, as a member of the Mu family, the first thing you must learn is independence." In other words, don’t expect anyone to help you.
Mu Xiaolin fell silent, his eyes burning with hatred. But Mu Lichuan pretended not to notice, turning his gaze elsewhere.
The most prestigious school in Chuanshi was Chuan University High School. Mu Lichuan was in his second year of high school - thanks to skipping a grade, while Mu Xiaolin, being younger, should have been in middle school. So they parted ways at the school gates.
"Elder Brother, I don’t know where the middle school section is. Can you take me there?" Mu Xiaolin thought, If he wants to mess with me, then I’ll make sure he deals with all my problems too.
Mu Lichuan smiled, though his eyes remained cold. "Lao Chen will take you. I’m in a hurry." With that, he turned and left without another glance at Mu Xiaolin’s darkening expression.
"Young Master, this way." Lao Chen, the driver, couldn’t hide his distaste. A teenager his age, and he can’t even handle the basics? Expecting the young master to escort him like he’s some helpless child?
Mu Xiaolin walked off stiffly, his resentment growing fiercer.
Mu Lichuan’s memories of school were hazy, mostly revolving around his bald homeroom teacher. In his past life, he had been solely focused on seizing control of the Mu family as quickly as possible. Concepts like "friendship," "innocence," and "happiness" had long since abandoned him.
"Lichuan? What’s wrong? Don’t tell me you heard about Lin Xiaolin’s confession and got too scared to even enter the classroom?" A voice suddenly clapped him on the shoulder.
Mu Lichuan froze. "Confession?" He had no memory of this at all.
"Seriously? You and Lin Xiaolin are basically the school’s golden couple. Don’t tell me you’re not into her?" The speaker was a freckle-faced boy. "Come on, let’s go!"
Mu Lichuan let himself be dragged along. When they reached the classroom door, he saw a girl with a ponytail, head bowed. Spotting him, she whispered, "Mu Lichuan, I like you. Do you like me?"
At that moment, Mu Lichuan felt an overwhelming sense of absurdity.
"No, I don’t." The words left his lips, cold and unfeeling.
