The Sweet little Fulang Chapter 161 Part 1

Chapter 161

During the farming off-season, not a single figure could be seen in the distant fields, and there were no neighbors near the Shen family’s new house. Lu Daxiang had been bitten by dogs and beaten, the pain searing into his bones. But now, even if he wanted to cry for help, there was no one in sight—and he didn’t dare anyway. It was truly a case of "calling to heaven, heaven doesn’t answer; calling to earth, earth doesn’t respond." Filled with terror and fear, he glanced at Du Hehua, who had egged him on to come and freeload for money, and wished he could bite a chunk of flesh off her.
[叫天天不應叫地地不靈 (jiào tiān tiān bù yìng jiào dì dì bù líng): lit. Calling to heaven, heaven doesn’t answer; calling to earth, earth doesn’t respond; fig. utterly helpless with no one to turn to]

Seeing him silent, Shen Xuanqing showed no mercy, delivering another punch to his stomach and coldly asking, "Not talking?"

When Lu Daxiang saw him raise the wooden door bolt, the memory of having his leg broken in the past resurfaced, and he hastily cried out, "I’ll talk, I’ll talk!"

Only then did Shen Xuanqing lower the door bolt. He knew Lu Daxiang had come today to freeload, but it had been a year since their last interaction, and things had been peaceful. After buying Lu Gu on their wedding day, he had made it clear to the Lu family that there would be no further ties.

He had been selling rabbits and pork for quite some time, and since Anjia Village wasn’t far, the Lu family must have heard about it. They had never shamelessly come to Lu Gu for money or goods before, so why today? If he didn’t get to the bottom of this, he wouldn’t let them leave.

Shen Yaoqing noticed Du Hehua shifting her feet, looking like she wanted to flee but didn’t dare, and he barked, "Stay put!"

Du Hehua, after all, was an older woman. Though she usually had no filter and would curse freely, she didn’t dare scheme now. She shrank her neck and stayed still, inwardly lamenting her misfortune because of the damned Shen brothers.

Beside her, Lu Daxiang, cowed by the threats, trembled as he pointed at Du Hehua and cursed, "This damn bitch! If she hadn’t egged me on, saying you had money and that Guzi should show me some filial respect, I wouldn’t have dared come!"

But while Du Hehua feared Shen Xuanqing and Shen Yaoqing, she wasn’t afraid of Lu Daxiang. She jumped up and hurled insults back: "You heartless, spineless bastard! Now you’re pinning it on me? Did I drag you here at knifepoint?"

Lu Daxiang’s hands shook even more violently. He spat a bloody glob on the ground and was about to retort when Shen Xuanqing, impatient with their bickering, raised his voice: "Enough! Get to the point."

Once they fell silent, Lu Daxiang finally spoke.

It turned out that three days ago, he and Du Hehua had gone to the Li family in town but were turned away at the door. On their way back, they ran into a well-dressed gentleman at the village entrance, accompanied by two servants. At first, they thought he was some wealthy relative, but upon seeing his face, they realized it was someone surnamed Xu.

Lu Daxiang had met Xu Yanrong ten years ago, back when Lu Gu’s mother was still alive.

Shen Xuanqing was puzzled, who was this Xu person? Seeing Lu Daxiang’s ashen face and reluctance to continue, while Du Hehua sneered beside him, he forced Lu Daxiang to explain everything from start to finish.

Country bumpkins with no experience of the world, cowed by violence, would spill everything when beaten.

The two had gone to the Li family three days ago to ask Lu Wen for money or grain, but they hadn’t even made it past the back door before being dismissed by a servant who said Lu Wen was busy and couldn’t see them. Naturally, they were furious.

As for Xu Yanrong, he was connected to Lu Gu’s mother, Ye Yuzhen.

Ten years ago, Xu Yanrong had come to Anjia Village asking about Ye Yuzhen. The two met at the gate of the Lu family courtyard, and when Lu Daxiang came out of the house, he saw tears in Ye Yuzhen’s eyes. Back then, he was young and hot-tempered, so he chased the stranger away. After that, Xu Yanrong never appeared again.

Though they had only met once without exchanging a word, Lu Daxiang sensed something unusual. Ye Yuzhen was usually gentle but was far from weak - when she argued, she was fierce and never backed down. Lu Daxiang had once asked if she had been involved with Xu, leading to a huge fight where Ye Yuzhen nearly grabbed scissors. Terrified, he stopped asking and instead sneaked off to her hometown, Dinghe Village, to investigate.

What he found shocked him. It turned out that while Ye Yuzhen was learning embroidery at a workshop, she had given a pouch to the young master of the Xu family, who accepted it and even gave her a jade pendant in return. What else could that be but a love token?

But what kind of family was the Xu family? How could they take a fancy to a country girl like her?

The Xu family was at least decent enough not to ruin her reputation outright. They confined Xu Yanrong and forbade him from seeing Ye Yuzhen again. The workshop was instructed to find a minor fault and dismiss her, and they discreetly sent a matron to the Ye family to pressure them into marrying her off quickly to sever any lingering attachments.

Before leaving, the matron took back the jade pendant but returned the pouch.

Embarrassed by the scandal, the Ye family married Ye Yuzhen off to Anjia Village, farther away, to avoid gossip.

Not long after Ye Yuzhen married, Xu Yanrong also married.

Lu Daxiang, newly wed, had thought himself lucky to marry such a beautiful and skilled wife. Sometimes she even earned more than him. He never imagined there was such a backstory, Ye Yuzhen had someone else in her heart!

When he left Dinghe Village, he was seething with resentment, almost forgetting to pay off Ye Yuzhen’s aunt. Back home, the two fought constantly until Ye Yuzhen gradually fell ill, and the arguments ceased.

"So now that you’ve succeeded, congratulations on winning your beauty."

"If I’d accepted my aunt’s support, I wouldn’t have needed to copy texts for a living." Ji Zhexi met his gaze. "I could only disappoint my cousin’s affection."

Ruili pressed his lips together. Was this an explanation? He felt awkward, unable to muster a kind response. "Then I wish you success in the palace exams. My brother says the capital’s nobility adore young scholars, with your talents you might find an even better match."

Ji Zhexi exhaled faintly. Without arguing, he untied a red-threaded jade pendant from his waist and handed it over. "A small token of thanks for your kindness in Siyang."

Ruili didn’t take it, but Ji Zhexi pressed it into his palm. "Keep it if you like. If not, discard it. It’s nothing valuable."

With a nod, he turned and left.

The jade retained its previous owner’s warmth. Ruili stared at it, then at the retreating figure. Words lodged in his throat, unspoken.

Mid-month, Ruili returned to Siyang. Half a year away meant reunions with old friends, and discreet inquiries about the metropolitan exam results.

At night, he often examined the pendant, baffled that Ji Zhexi had gone out of his way to explain. Had he actually succeeded in winning him over?

Skeptical, he sent someone to verify Ji Zhexi’s story. Only after confirmation did he relax.

By June, exam results were still delayed, but Ruijin returned home on leave with Luo Yuxing.

During a family banquet, Ruijin pulled Ruili aside.

    "Lecturing me again?"

Ruijin ignored the jab. "Remember what I said earlier this year?"

    Ruili feigned ignorance.

Ruijin’s tone turned serious. "You’re our parents' favorite. Now that I’m settled, the only worry left is you. You can’t spend your life playing around."

Ruili tried to deflect. "I’m still young."

"Just hear me out. The decision is yours."

    Ruili reluctantly listened.

"This year’s palace exam, the tanhua (third-ranked scholar) is from Siyang."

Ruili’s eyes widened. "Someone better than you?"

"A young, unmarried scholar from a humble background." Ruijin sipped tea, adding meaningfully, "With dignified looks."

Ruili scoffed. "A tanhua, unmarried, and from a poor family? The capital’s nobles must be fighting over him. Why would he settle for me? Don’t offend powerful families for my sake."

Ruijin chuckled. "I wouldn’t go that far without your consent. But I’ve met him before, we admired each other’s talents. Had it not been for his mourning period, we’d have taken the provincial exam together."

"Gold shines eventually. The special exam made up for lost time."

Ruili’s ears perked. "This tanhua, what’s his name?"

    "Ji Zhexi."

Ruili nearly bit his tongue. Struggling to keep his expression neutral, he asked, "Does he know you’re playing matchmaker?"

"The truth is, years ago, I knew he fancied you. But circumstances separated us, and I lost touch. Before the exams, he detoured to Cangzhu to see you."

"Given his long-standing feelings, I thought I’d help. But he said he wouldn’t speak up without first achieving success."

Ruili coughed hard. That scheming Ji Zhexi! He knew my brother all along!

"Brother, you said he’s liked me for years? Since when? I don’t recall ever meeting him."

Ruijin mused, "Long ago." Noticing Ruili’s interest, he added, "If you’re curious, ask him yourself."

"Great! What a wonderful match! I’m thrilled!" Ruili grinned through clenched teeth. "Tell Ji Zhexi to come back to Siyang immediately. I’d love to meet him."

Ruijin blinked. "Weren’t you against this earlier?"

"I didn’t want to presume. But if his feelings are genuine, how can I refuse?"

    Pleased, Ruijin nodded. "Excellent."

In July, Ji Zhexi returned to Siyang, drawing crowds. Ruijin, as his old friend, welcomed him at the city gate and whisked him home, disappointing many hopeful well-wishers.

Ruili tagged along. At the sight of that familiar face, he wordlessly turned and boarded the carriage.

Ruijin scolded, "Mind your manners!" Then turned to Ji Zhexi, he apologized, "Don’t mind him, he’s just shy."

Ji Zhexi glanced at Ruili’s retreating back, smiling slightly. Shy? More like plotting revenge.

At the Zhang residence, after formal greetings, Ji Zhexi finally cornered Ruili.

    "Angry?"

Ruili rolled his eyes. "Who dares be angry at the tanhua?"

Ji Zhexi sighed. "Must we do this?"

"You made a fool of me! All that talk about coincidences, mocking me for seeking attention, accusing me of being shallow, who was the shallow one? I’ve never met someone so—"

Ji Zhexi cupped his face and kissed him silent.

Ruili froze, his cheeks burning. He turned away. "Brother said you’ve known about me for years. Really?"

    "Yes."

    "Since when?"

Ji Zhexi pulled him down to sit. "You probably don’t remember. You’ve always flirted carelessly, how would you know who I was?"

    Ruili flushed. "Stop dodging. Explain."

"Years ago, your family bought the communal mountain near my village. I was gathering firewood when we crossed paths."

Ruili vaguely recalled wandering those hills but smirked. "So you were smitten at first sight."

"More like love at first sight."

"Admit it, you did stalk me down!"

Ji Zhexi shrugged. "Not entirely. I’d worked for your family long before. I frequented places you visited, but we never coincided - until fate intervened."

"Then why provoke me when we met?"

"With your temper, would sweet talk have worked?"

    Ruili pouted. "You’re devious."

"For you, it’s worth the effort." Ji Zhexi stood suddenly, his expression serious. "I’ve laid myself bare. What about you?"

Ruili yanked a gold-threaded sachet from his waist and tossed it. "If others can do it, so can I."

Ji Zhexi caught it, tracing the embroidery. "The craftsmanship is lacking, but the thought counts."

    Ruili beamed.

Mr. Ji, we have a lifetime ahead. Let’s see how you handle me.

My Fulang is a Delicate Flower Chapter 9 Part 1

Chapter 9

You Erlang of the You family passed the provincial examination, and the celebratory banquet for the villagers was set for the 26th. The You family invited everyone in the village, clearly intending to make it a grand affair.

In the Jiangnan region, scholars were highly respected and admired. Because of this, even farming families who could afford to eat would send their children to private schools for a couple of years, so many people within the same magistrate's office were literate.

Though education had become commonplace, those who truly excelled in their studies and earned scholarly honors were still the exceptional few.

The You family had long been one of the prominent surnames in the village, descended from the first farming households who settled in Mingxun Village during its reclamation. Generations had passed, yet their lineage remained unbroken.

Their ancestors included hunters, butchers, traveling merchants, and craftsmen. When the You clan was united, they had flourished for two generations. However, by recent generations, their cohesion had weakened, and with no particularly outstanding descendants, the position of village head, held by the You family for three generations, had passed to the Ji family. From then on, their decline became more pronounced.

That said, while the Ji family had also been among the first farming households in Mingxun Village, their earlier generations had been far less illustrious than the You family. Yet in recent years, as the You family declined, the Ji family had been quietly rising.

Both surnames were the most prominent households in Mingxun Village, sustaining the village for generations. The two families interacted frequently, their relations intricate, yet they were no strangers to covert rivalry and fierce competition.

Although the You family's last two generations had been lackluster, their ancestors had left them a solid foundation. Their fields and woodlands still accounted for the majority of the village’s land. While they were not extravagantly wealthy, they lived comfortably with ample food and clothing.

The You family prided themselves as one of the village’s great surnames, setting high standards for marriage.

You Erlang’s father had five siblings, making him the fourth eldest. Though his health was poor, this did not stop the You family from seeking a suitable match for him.

Initially, they had settled on a family of decent means, though the ger was broad-built and plain in appearance. The You family thought this would suit their fourth son well, as he needed someone to manage his household affairs.

The two families had agreed on the arrangement, but before the wedding, the eldest daughter of the Sun family seduced the fourth son of the You family. The two cooked raw rice into cooked rice - engaged in illicit relations before marriage, effectively forcing the You family’s hand.
[生米煮成熟饭 (shēng mǐ zhǔ chéng shú fàn): lit. to cook raw rice into cooked rice; fig. to force a situation to a point of no return]

The You family looked down on the Sun family, who often struggled to make ends meet. Yet the eldest Sun daughter threatened to kill herself at the You family’s doorstep if she were not allowed to marry into their household, creating an ugly scene.

With no other choice, the You family gritted their teeth and brought her in.

Though the eldest Sun daughter got her wish, she cost the You family face in the village and forced them to compensate the originally betrothed family heavily.

The You family loathed this daughter-in-law, and tensions between mother-in-law and daughter-in-law ran high.

However, the eldest Sun daughter had not enjoyed many years of comfort before the fourth son of the You family passed away. The You family, resentful of You Sunshi’s earlier coercion, not only failed to support the widow and her child but instead blamed her for cursing their son to death. When the family property was divided, she received next to nothing.
[尤孙氏 = You (husband's surname) + Sūn (maiden name) + shì (clan marker), Sūn of the You family]

The other uncles and aunts of the You family, having witnessed You Sunshi's actions over the years, treated her coldly, nearly neglecting the mother and children entirely.

You Sunshi endured years of hardship, but she was resourceful. Despite poverty, she managed to educate her son.

Once You Erlang earned the title of xiucai, the You family’s attitude changed dramatically. The uncle who once refused to lend even a candle now sent money to the fourth branch. The third branch, once full of harsh words, bought expensive writing materials. The fifth branch frequently delivered poultry, fish, and meat.

Even the married aunts and their husbands sent lavish gifts.

You Sunshi was shrewd. Though she harbored resentment, she understood the importance of maintaining family ties. She accepted everything without complaint.

To outsiders, the branches of the family appeared closer than ever, as if past quarrels had never happened.

Now that You Erlang had passed the provincial examination, the entire You clan was overjoyed. The different branches pooled money to set off firecrackers, honor their ancestors, and host a grand feast… The fourth branch contributed nothing, yet the other branches treated You Sunshi with newfound respect, consulting her on every matter.

It was no surprise the You family changed their tune so quickly. Not only did a successful exam candidate have the chance to become an official, but the most immediate benefit was tax exemption.

The You family already owned substantial fields and woodlands. Now, with a juren (provincial graduate) in the family, they would no longer need to pay taxes under his protection.

Within a couple of years, the You family was bound to prosper.

“Now you see why, even two days after returning, the You family is still setting off firecrackers and celebrating.”

During breakfast, the crackling of firecrackers echoed outside as Zhao’s mother explained the dynamics between the village’s prominent families to Huo Shu.

Life had been hard for Zhao’s mother in recent years. With her bedridden husband and her son away for corvée labor without news, she worried constantly about food and clothing.

Without a capable man to manage the household, the villagers, who bullied the weak, often took advantage of her.

Because of this, she never spoke of other families’ affairs outside, fearing gossip.

In the past, when her husband was still alive, she could confide in him. But in recent years, she had been alone, with no one to talk to indoors or out.

Huo Shu was a man of few words and not one for idle chatter, so she enjoyed sharing village gossip with him.

Rebirth of the Useless Young Master’s Counterattack Chapter 39

Chapter 39: Staying Against Their Will

"Because he still had some rationality left, knowing you were his mother, the person he cherishes most. Should we test it again? See if the dark energy inside him will corrode you, Aunt Bai?" Mu Lichuan's face was filled with loathing. "Actually, Grandfather wanted to test your and Father’s blood to see if there was anything unusual, to find a way to dispel the dark energy and ensure Xiaolin’s safety."

"You know how Grandfather is...old and prideful. He speaks bluntly and doesn’t like explaining himself." As the boy spoke, his gaze remained fixed on Mu Xiaolin.

In his past life, Mu Xiaolin, wielding his power, had disregarded everyone else’s opinions. He crushed anyone who opposed him, including Mu Lichuan himself.

Though Mu Lichuan didn’t know what had happened after his death in that life, Mu Xiaolin’s cruel torment of him proved one thing: he feared no pressure from the Mu family. No, to be precise, the Mu family’s pressure meant nothing to him.

Hearing his grandson defend him, Mu Xiwang felt a twinge of awkwardness before turning away. He hadn’t expected the boy to be so skilled at twisting words, turning lies into truths.

Mu Xiaolin retorted loudly, "Impossible! You just want to drive us out of the Mu family!" Hmph! Did they think he couldn’t see through Mu Lichuan’s venomous schemes?

"Little Brother, you misunderstand me deeply. When did I ever say I wanted you gone? Or have you forgotten, if not for this incident, Aunt Bai would already be the Mu family’s matriarch, wouldn’t she?" A faint sneer curled Mu Lichuan’s lips as he spoke.

Truthfully, it would be best if the mother and son left the Mu family. But he knew all too well, with Mu Xiaolin being a walking time bomb, the Mu family would never let him roam free to harm others. Neither would the other major families.

At these words, Bai Ping and her son fell silent. Mu Changnian, however, looked at his eldest son with relief. "Father, if you had such concerns, why not explain earlier?"

He understood that Mu Lichuan’s words were just covering for his father. From Mu Xiwang’s actions, it was clear he truly doubted Xiaolin’s parentage.

But how could Xiaolin not be his son when their DNA had matched? Another test would be the ultimate blow to his dignity as the family head. Who would respect him after this?

Mu Xiwang’s face remained impassive. "The blood test is still necessary."

"You—!" Bai Ping’s expression darkened. Despite Mu Lichuan’s smooth explanations, she wasn’t fooled. Even a blind man could see Mu Xiwang’s disdain for her son.

They needed the Mu family’s protection. Without it, certain people might discover them, bringing unforeseen dangers. She had to inform that person quickly. Otherwise, her son’s safety couldn’t be guaranteed.

"Ah Ping, Father means well. Let’s cooperate," Mu Changnian said reluctantly. He couldn’t bear to leave the Mu family either. Who knew what dangers lurked outside?

It wasn’t the mundane struggles of ordinary life he feared, but the unknown threats, especially the dark energy within Xiaolin. The memory of its corrosive force still haunted him.

Mu Xiaolin watched their act coldly. "Mom, can’t you see? They want to imprison us in the Mu family!" The boy’s voice was firm, devoid of fear.

The dark energy inside him was a gift from that person, a protection. It would never spiral out of control. So why...? Were they planning to use him? Or control him?

Bai Ping was torn. Part of her wanted the Mu family’s protection for her son. Yet another part refused to let him live under their surveillance.

"Mom!" Mu Xiaolin called out sharply when she hesitated. Tears of stubborn defiance welled in his eyes, but he refused to let them fall.

"Fine. We’ll leave," Bai Ping said softly, her voice tinged with resignation.

Mu Changnian was taken aback by their resolve. Just when things could have been smoothed over, they chose exile. "Ah Ping, Xiaolin, you—" He trailed off, conflicted.

Bai Ping laughed coldly. "We never should have come to the Mu family. Never should have hoped for the impossible. From the moment we step out, we’ll have no ties to the Mu family."

She had misjudged Mu Changnian. She’d thought he could protect them, but he held no real power in the Mu family, not even basic standing.

Mu Lichuan feigned panic. "Little Brother, Aunt Bai, leaving is suicide! Are you really willing to take that risk?" His dark eyes brimmed with concern, as if already seeing their corpses.

"If we die, it’ll be the Mu family’s doing!" Mu Xiaolin’s eyes burned with hatred. Once he gained enough power, the first to die would be Mu Lichuan, then the entire Mu family. The Mo family wouldn’t be spared either.

"Little Brother, must you be so extreme? You’re part of the Mu family. Everything we do is for your own good," Mu Lichuan said, frowning slightly. As if Mu Xiaolin, raised outside, couldn’t understand familial duty. He was too selfish to ever protect the Mu family, even if he succeeded.

"For our good? How hypocritical! Using ‘for our good’ as an excuse to imprison us?" Mu Xiaolin spat. His heart had twisted beyond reason, blind to the terror of the dark energy within him.

This time, Mu Lichuan stayed silent, glancing at his father instead. The man’s face was stormy, clearly angered. "What does the Mu family want from you? Haven’t we given you everything - food, shelter, a life?"

"Master!" Bai Ping shrieked when she saw her son’s pale, trembling lips. "You’re right. Without your support, we wouldn’t be alive today."

Her heart ached. She’d thought entering the Mu family would be easy. Now she saw the truth - getting in was hard, leaving even harder. Unless they became pawns. Unless they were useless.

Her son’s body attracted unclean things. If a powerful evil spirit came, even the Mu family might not withstand it. But for now... staying was their only choice.

"Mom..." Mu Xiaolin’s eyes swam with tears. The Mu family’s oppression only fed his hatred, his eyes gradually tinting red.

Recognizing the signs of the dark energy’s influence, Mu Lichuan acted fast. "Aunt Bai, the Mu family means no harm. Look at Xiaolin—!"

Bai Ping had doubted him, but at the mention of her son’s condition, she whirled around. Xiaolin’s face had gone blank, his eyes glazed with an eerie light. "Xiaolin! Xiaolin! It’s me—Mom! Look at me!" When he didn’t respond, she steeled herself and slapped him.

The pain jolted Mu Xiaolin back to awareness. "Mom? What’s wrong?" In just a blink, his mother was sobbing uncontrollably.

"My son... my son..." Bai Ping dropped to her knees, clutching him tightly. "We’ll stay with the Mu family." Even if they learned Xiaolin wasn’t a Mu by blood, they wouldn’t dare harm him. If he lost control, the entire family would pay.

Mu Xiwang and the others exhaled in relief. None of them knew the extent of the dark energy’s reach, whether it was limited or infinite. The death toll could be catastrophic.

Mu Xiaolin was utterly confused. "Mom, what happened? Don’t cry. I’m fine." He remembered nothing of the past moments.

"Aunt Bai, Xiaolin is a Mu family's... genius. Our ancestors wouldn’t want him in danger. You should stay," Mu Lichuan said, his goal achieved. No need to push further, not when the elders now viewed him favorably.

For now, he needed their protection. His foolish father might do anything otherwise.

Mu Changnian added, "Xiaolin, you’re my child, a member of the Mu family. Where else would you go?"

"The engagement ceremony is soon. Aside from school, prepare for it." Once betrothed to Mo Shanshan, Xiaolin would have the Mo family’s backing too.

The thought of being engaged to Mo Shanshan made Mu Xiaolin sick. If he hated the Mu family, he despised the Mo family even more. Their mess, yet he had to clean it up.

"I’ll talk sense into Xiaolin. Don’t worry." Bai Ping squeezed her son’s hand - a silent plea to endure, for now.

Rebirth to Erase Dark History Chapter 54 Part 1

Chapter 54: He Sacrificed Himself

"Jiajia, come visit the capital when you have time. We’ll host you, you must come," Meng-Three-Year-Old waved goodbye reluctantly to Yang Jiabo.

Xu Chen added, "Don’t forget to bring food when you come. The capital has plenty of delicious dishes, you should try them."

"Foodie, you just want Jiajia to bring you snacks, don’t you?" Chang Jin immediately called him out. This guy was always looking for an argument.

Xu Chen shot him a glance and said to Tang Yu, "Dump this guy. I’ll introduce you to a better boyfriend."

Tang Yu smiled. "I’ll consider it seriously."

"Breaking up couples invites lightning strikes," Chang Jing glared at Xu Chen before instantly switching to a fawning expression toward Tang Yu. "Tangtang, a boyfriend as good and outstanding as me is rare, you should cherish me."

Amid the noisy banter, the group boarded the car. Ren Boying smiled and bid farewell to Yang Jiabo. "Jiajia, thanks for your hospitality. Hope to see you in the capital."

"I will." Yang Jiabo smiled. He would definitely visit the capital, it was the nation’s capital, after all. He had to see it at least once.

"Little boss, you’ve never been to the capital, have you? The capital and this place are like two different worlds. You should go and broaden your horizons," Qin Rong said softly, but her words rubbed Yang Jiabo the wrong way.

Zhang Yunwei and Qin Ruiwen also bid farewell politely. Yang Jiabo waved as their car slowly left the farm. With this lively group gone, the world felt peaceful again, and he could return to his quiet life.

"They’ve all left. When are you heading back?" Yang Jiabo turned to Wei Jing.

"Day after tomorrow. Come with me to my place tomorrow afternoon, my mom wants to treat you to a meal."

Wei Jing was leaving, and Song Yufang wanted to thank Yang Jiabo for taking care of him.

Yang Jiabo: "Sure, no need to buy ingredients, we can bring some from the farm."

Wei Jing: "Alright, I’ll call and let her know."

After lunch, Yang Jiabo and Wei Jing went up the mountain to feed the chickens.

"Jiajia, staying cooped up all the time isn’t good. Why not come to the capital with me? My grandfather has always wanted to meet you," Wei Jing tried to persuade him to get out more.

The idea did tempt Yang Jiabo. After some thought, he said, "You’ll be busy this time, right? You won’t have time to show me around. Let’s wait until you’re free then I’ll visit, and you can be my tour guide."

"Fine. Once I settle my work, come find me in the capital," Wei Jing didn’t push further.

As they chatted, they reached the chicken coop on the mountain. Yang Jiabo scattered a small bag of corn where the chickens gathered. Instantly, feathers flew everywhere as the chickens flapped their wings, scrambling for food.

"Woof woof woof—" Dahei and Xiaohei suddenly appeared, circling Yang Jiabo’s feet.

"These two dogs are well-raised—their coats are shiny and smooth," Wei Jing reached out to pet them, but the dogs dodged. They sniffed around him, as if memorizing his scent.

"Of course. They’re Yang Qing’s ‘dog sons.’ My dad has a ‘cat son,’ and now he’s also taking care of a myna. He’s always happy about it. That tabby cat of ours is so fat it looks like a pig. It loves sunbathing on high spots all day, barely moving, the laziest cat I’ve ever seen."

"Pets can help you relax. You should get one you like," Wei Jing watched the clever dogs. He stretched his hand toward Dahei. "Dahei, come."

Dahei trotted over, sniffed, then placed a paw in Wei Jing’s hand.

"He wants to shake hands. Yang Qing plays this game with him often."

Wei Jing shook Dahei's paw. Xiaohei eagerly approached and offered his paw too. Not wanting to play favorites, Wei Jing shook Xiaohei's paw as well. Then, Dahei fetched a dirty baseball, excitedly nudging Wei Jing’s leg.

"He wants you to play fetch with him?" Wei Jing looked at Yang Jiabo for confirmation.

"Yeah. That ball looks disgusting, doesn’t it?" Yang Jiabo knew Wei Jing was sharp enough to understand, but the slobbery, grass-stained, mud-caked ball was hard to ignore.

"You caught me," Wei Jing frowned at Dahei. Xiaohei then trotted over with another baseball in his mouth, equally eager to play.

"No need to struggle, here." Yang Jiabo handed Wei Jing a glove. He did the same thing often.

Yang Jiabo liked animals too, but he was a bit of a neat freak, so he preferred letting others take care of them while he played occasionally.

Wei Jing put on the glove and started playing fetch with the two black dogs. They were hyperactive, as if pumped with adrenaline. Yang Jiabo usually surrendered after half an hour, but Wei Jing handled them effortlessly.

"Brother, you’ve got great stamina, you work out often, huh? Dahei and Xiaohei have too much energy. I usually admit defeat."

"Yeah, I’ve kept up with exercise." Ever since Yang Jiabo got hurt protecting him, Wei Jing had trained consistently, even learning some combat skills.

Yang Jiabo poked Wei Jing’s arm. "So firm."

"All from training," Wei Jing glanced at Yang Jiabo’s soft, pale frame. "You should exercise too. With your sweet tooth, you’ll gain weight sooner or later."

"Who says I don’t exercise? I work in the fields every day, that counts!" Yang Jiabo retorted indignantly.

After feeding the chickens, the two wandered the mountain, picking vegetables for dinner. Near the chili field, they saw Yang Jianjun in old clothes, weeding with others. As they approached to greet him, a strange voice rang out.

"The east is red, the sun rises…" Yang Jiabo spotted a myna in a cage under a tree, hopping around and repeating the line. "Dad actually taught it to sing. Wonder how long it’ll take to learn the whole song."

"Jiajia, it’s too sunny now, why are you out?" Yang Jianjun paused his work when he saw them.

Yang Jiabo scolded, "If you know it’s hot, why are you working now? You should rest when it’s time to rest."

"I’m used to it, and I can’t sit idle anyway," Yang Jianjun smiled, knowing Yang Jiabo cared.

"Jiajia! Jiajia—" The myna stopped singing and began screeching Yang Jiabo’s name instead.

Wei Jing walked over and said to the bird, "Jiajia, little rascal."

"Jiajia, bite poop!" The myna immediately mimicked.

Yang Jiabo: "Wei Jing, don’t teach it nonsense!"

Wei Jing: "It learns fast."

"Learns fatsh," the myna garbled.

"Xiaoba is getting smarter," Yang Jianjun said proudly.

"Smart, my foot. Call it smart when it learns the whole ‘East Is Red.’ Though if it does, maybe it can perform at the restaurant," Yang Jiabo mused.

The two spent the day leisurely playing with animals. The next day, Yang Jiabo prepared vegetables, fruits, a fish, and a chicken before heading to the Wei family home with Wei Jing.

Transmigrated As Cannon Fodder To Marry Chapter 96 Part 3

Jiang Lin grumbled at Wei Yunzhao, who countered, “Did you enjoy it, wife?”

Jiang Lin couldn’t deny it and nodded honestly, earning Wei Yunzhao’s bold reply: “Then this husband dares to do it again.”

Jiang Lin refused to back down. “Then let’s continue tonight, kiss all you want.”

Wei Yunzhao suddenly laughed, squeezing Jiang Lin’s palm. “Kissing my wife could never be enough.”

The words nearly made Jiang Lin mentally add: Of course not, I’m very kissable. His smug expression said it all. Wei Yunzhao pulled him into an embrace. “Wife, I adore you.”

Jiang Lin noted that this newly initiated man was especially clingy today - even coquettish, and he loved it, indulging him without restraint.

The carriage soon arrived at Anyang Bofu. Hand in hand, the inseparable couple disembarked and entered the manor. Unlike before, the steward now treated Jiang Lin with utmost respect, fearful of slighting him.

Anyang Bo, informed of their return, rushed out to greet them with equal enthusiasm.

He already knew about the marriage and wanted to ask why Jiang Lin hadn’t told him, but he feared upsetting him. Fortunately, Wei Yunzhao stepped in, explaining and presenting prepared gifts, successfully placating Anyang Bo.

Then, Anyang Bo eagerly shared his good news, he was going to have another son.

The irresponsible Anyang Bo even went so far as to call Qiu Shui, wanting Jiang Lin to meet his unborn brother.

Jiang Lin’s expression was indescribable, suspecting the man had lost his mind from excessive baby-making.

Before Qiu Shui arrived, Jiang Lin asked, “Do you plan to give her a status?”

“Her” referred to Qiu Shui. Anyang Bo, thinking he understood Jiang Lin’s concern, assured him, “Lin’er, don’t worry. I won’t let anyone challenge your position as heir. Though this child is my late-life son, I’ll dote on him, but I know my limits. What isn’t his, he’ll never covet.”

Regardless of the child’s gender, the age gap alone made it no threat. Besides, Jiang Lin didn’t care about the heirship.

Jiang Lin decided to drop it and ask Qiu Shui directly.

Qiu Shui soon arrived, politely greeting them. Anyang Bo lavished praise on her, gazing fondly at her belly - clearly overjoyed about the child.

Qiu Shui, now carrying a motherly aura, indulged him before requesting a private word with Jiang Lin. Anyang Bo, pleased by her coaxing, agreed readily and even dragged Wei Yunzhao out for a game of chess.

Once alone, Qiu Shui knelt before Jiang Lin, who waited silently.

Qiu Shui said, “This humble one begs the heir to watch over my child in the future.”

Jiang Lin motioned for her to rise. “If that’s all, speak standing.”

“Yes.” Qiu Shui stood respectfully. “I know my status is lowly, and having a child is already a blessing. I dare not presume beyond my station. But I’m of humble origins, and the Master Bo is old. I fear no one will properly raise my child, hence my plea.”

“Is that all?” Jiang Lin studied her.

“I also fear this child may not survive,” Qiu Shui admitted warily.

    Jiang Lin pressed, “Explain.”

Qiu Shui confessed what she’d overheard: “Some time ago, I heard Madam’s maid say she wasn’t truly mad, she was poisoned into insanity. The poison was given by Second Young Master.”

This aligned with Jiang Lin’s suspicions, he’d long suspected Jiang Zhen.

“But the poison came from the Zhao family, to retaliate for Madam’s schemes against the Wei family. I fear the Zhao family may target my child.”

Jiang Lin knew the Zhao family was petty and ruthless, but this still surprised him.

He asked, “If Zhao Qiuru stops taking the medicine, will she recover?”

Qiu Shui replied, “She seems better off it, but after so long drugged and confined, even if not truly mad, she’s nearly there.”

Fair enough. But Jiang Lin wanted to stir trouble.

Neither the Zhao family nor Zhao Qiuru were good people. He wouldn’t act directly, but he’d give Zhao Qiuru a chance to turn on them - let dogs bite dogs.
[狗咬狗 (gǒu yǎo gǒu): lit. Dogs biting dogs; fig. Iinfighting among villains.

Zhao Qiuru had some wits when not insane.

Jiang Lin said, “As long as you harbor no delusions, I’ll help guide your child. Tomorrow, I’ll send medicine. Find a way to ‘cure’ Zhao Qiuru and tell her what the Zhao family did.”

Qiu Shui understood immediately. She bowed. “The heir need not worry. This humble one will ensure it’s done.”

Jiang Lin left to watch Wei Yunzhao’s chess game with Anyang Bo.

Qiu Shui watched his retreating figure, relieved she’d never overstepped. After all, Jiang Lin was someone who dared to oppose the Emperor.

But with the heir’s promise, her child would have a better future. That was enough.

Returning to the Wei mansion, Jiang Lin and Wei Yunzhao found a disheveled Yue Heng at the gates.

Inviting him in, Jiang Lin asked curiously, “Your Highness, were you chased by dogs too?”

Yue Heng sat, gulped down water, and panted, “Worse than dogs. This prince never knew those wheezing old ministers could run so fast! A trained youth like me was nearly cornered.”

The reason for the chase was obvious.

    “The decree was announced?”

Yue Heng brightened. “The crown prince was named today. The old man said he’ll abdicate to Fifth Brother tomorrow before the court. Then, he’ll be the rightful successor.”

Wei Yunzhao poured him more water. “But it’s all Your Highness’s doing.”

Jiang Lin asked, “Your Highness, why the Fifth Prince?”

Yue Heng smirked. “Because when you can’t repay lifesaving and upbringing debts, you can give a throne.”

He then asked, “Aren’t you curious about my history with Fifth Brother?”

Since he was volunteering, Jiang Lin gestured for him to proceed.

Yue Heng began dramatically, “It all started years ago, when this prince was a starving child…”

My Fulang is a Delicate Flower Chapter 8 Part 2

Under everyone’s gaze, Yu Xia burned with humiliation. A ger’s face was thin-skinned, he felt like his whole body was on fire.

Not daring to look at Ji Taoyu, he kept his head bowed and said tearfully,

“Tao ger, I shouldn’t have made you fall into the water and humiliated you. I was blinded by greed. The moment you fell in, I panicked too, but the crowd under the exam results was so packed, I got pushed away. By the time I ran back, someone had already pulled you out.”

“I’ve been terrified ever since, couldn’t eat, couldn’t sleep. The more I thought about it, the more I regretted it. That’s why I’ve come to apologize. It was my fault.”

Ji Yangzong and Huang Manjing immediately understood and were horrified.

“How could you do such a thing! Tao ger has always been frail, pushing him into the water could’ve killed him!”

Huang Manjing, furious, abandoned her usual politeness and directly berated him.

Ji Yangzong’s brows furrowed deeply. “Utterly disgraceful! The two of you went to the city together, how could you do this?”

“This child deserves a beating and scolding. As soon as I found out, I punished him harshly. But the most important thing was to apologize to Tao ger, so I brought him here. It’s also my fault for failing to discipline him properly and letting him commit such a wicked act. From now on, I’ll make sure he cultivates better character at home.”

Yu Sunshi presented a basket of eggs and two old hens they had raised. “We know we’ve wronged Tao ger. Please accept these humble gifts to help him recover. We’ll also cover all medical expenses for his illness.”

Though Ji Yangzong and Huang Manjing were angry, Yu Sunshi's thorough apology and gifts left them unable to unleash their fury.

They turned to Ji Taoyu, waiting for his response.

Ji Taoyu hadn’t told his parents earlier precisely to spare them worry and conflict. Yu Sunshi's direct approach - apologizing in front of them was clever. It settled the matter cleanly, easing his conscience.

A parent’s heart is hard to defy. It seemed Sunshi hadn’t instructed Yu Xia to act that way.

Looking at the weeping ger on the ground, he said, “I’m standing here unharmed now, but Xia ger, don’t think you’re lucky that nothing worse happened. The only reason this didn’t become a tragedy is because a Warrior saved me. You must’ve seen who it was. From now on, don’t spread word of this incident, don’t bring trouble to the kind soul who helped.”

“He won’t say a word! This was all his fault!”

Ji Taoyu glanced at Yu Sunshi, who had hastily spoken up for Yu Xia. She shrank back and fell silent.

“I-I understand. No one else knows about this.”

Yu Xia said cautiously, “And I-I won’t ever have such improper thoughts again.”

“In that case, there’s nothing more to say. Xia ger, you may rise.”

“Thank you, Tao ger, for your generosity.”

Seeing that Taoyu didn’t insist on dragging out the matter, Sunshi sighed in relief and helped Yu Xia up.

Huang Manjing, however, her heart still ached for her child. “Sun niangzi, our families have always gotten along well. From now on, keep a closer eye on Xia ger. If he nurses such malice among fellow villagers where bonds of affection exist, what if he marries into another family someday? With this temperament, he’ll surely suffer for it.”

Yu Sunshi's face burned with shame, but she could only agree. “You’re right, Huang niangzi. I’ll discipline him more strictly from now on.”

After the Yu mother and son left, Ji Yangzong closed the courtyard gate and looked at his son sitting under the awning. He was both angry and helpless. “Why didn’t you tell us earlier? You let them bully you for nothing. Had we known, we’d have gone to the Yu family ourselves, no need for their tearful performance.”

“Exactly! I thought you slipped into the water by accident, I had no idea it was that Yu family’s ger! And to think he invited you to the city that morning. Had I known, I’d never have let you go.”

Huang Manjing was shaken by the thought of what could’ve happened.

“If I’d told you earlier, and you confronted the Yu family, wouldn’t the whole village have found out I fell in and was rescued? If the Yu family denied pushing me and insisted I fell on my own, people might’ve thought you were abusing your authority as village head to bully them. We might’ve gained nothing, neither justice nor reputation.”

“At first, I was furious too. But after calming down, I realized acting rashly could’ve backfired. That’s why I first hinted to Sun niangzi, to see her reaction. If she’d pretended nothing happened, I’d have known their true nature and told you, so we’d know how to treat them in the future. But since she disciplined Yu Xia and brought him to apologize, they’re still decent people.”

Ji Yangzong and Huang Manjing thought it over and agreed. They admired Ji Taoyu’s careful reasoning, yet still felt they’d suffered a silent injustice.

“Even so, we can’t let the Yu family off so easily in the future.”

“Father, you’re the village head, how can you say such things? Yu Xia was the one at fault. Sun niangzi and Uncle Yu have always been honest and kind. There’s no need to punish their whole family.”

“The only reason Yu Xia acted so maliciously was because of You Erlang.”

Ji Yangzong suddenly understood, then sighed. “Now that you mention it, I’ve often seen Yu Xia visiting the You family. So he harbored such intentions. That settles it, we can’t delay this marriage any longer.”

Rebirth Married The Control group Fulang Chapter 140 Part 2

Instead of going home, he headed straight for Ji’an Martial Hall. After venting to his uncle, he secured a group of elite fighters and charged to the road, intercepting the slow-moving ox cart carrying Ji Zhexi and the girl.

The cart driver trembled as burly men surrounded them. The girl shrank behind Ji Zhexi.

“It’s fine.” Ji Zhexi noted the Ji’an insignia on their sleeves, they wouldn’t harm anyone.

Then the fighters parted, and Ruili strode forward with dark face.

The two stared at each other in silence. The fighters waited for the order to seize Ji Zhexi.

Finally, Ruili muttered, “Forget it. Let them go.”

He turned and slunk back to his carriage.

Baffled but obedient, the fighters dispersed.

    “Young master…”

Ruili hugged his knees, shaking his head to silence Ban Yan.

Seeing the girl’s frightened face, he couldn’t bring himself to act. He was already annoying enough, might as well do one decent thing.

Back home, Ruili moped for days, listless and sallow. After half a month, he had visibly thinned.

Zhang Fangyuan and Xu He couldn’t get a word out of him. The doctor diagnosed melancholy and loss of appetite due to the heat. Pressed, Ban Yan claimed Ruili missed his elder brother.

“Your brother wrote that they’re settled now,” Xu He said. “If you miss him, you can visit. It’ll ease your Dad's mind.”

    “Really?”

“If you want, we’ll write back so they can prepare for you.”

Ruili nodded. “I’ll think about it.”

Xu He sighed. “Alright. Ban Yan, take good care of him.”

    “Yes.”

Ruili flopped onto his bed, flipping idly through a novel. He’d read countless romances and plays, he knew exactly what this inexplicable feeling was.

And that was why he was so angry. He’d fallen into the very trope he despised: the spoiled rich kid infatuated with a poor scholar.

Why couldn’t he just enjoy being adored as a wealthy young master? Why did he have to scheme and end up humiliated? Now, he'd lost both wife and soldiers - utter humiliation!
[陪了夫人又折兵 (péi le fūrén yòu zhé bīng): lit. To lose both wife and soldiers; fig. To suffer a double loss.]

Now Ji Zhexi was probably laughing at him at home.

    How pathetic.

After more restless days, Ruili packed his bags and slunk off to his brother’s place.

Cangzhu Prefecture was bustling and prosperous - even more so than Siyang.

Ruili threw himself into food, shopping, and dragging Luo Yuxing around. Zhang Ruijin often returned to an empty house.

After a month, the newlywed had had enough.

    “When are you going back?”

“I just got here! Are you kicking me out?”

Zhang Ruijin frowned. “Stay as long as you want, but why are you always taking my fulang out?”

Ruili huffed. “You’ve always been serious, but Xiao Xing'er isn’t! What’s wrong with me showing him a good time?”

Zhang Ruijin shook his head. "This year's provincial exams are over. I think it's better to find you a suitable match among the young scholars in Siyang and arrange an early marriage."

Ruili brushed it off, and said jokingly, "Brother, you were a prodigy, shouldn't you at least find me a jinshi (metropolitan graduate)?"

"You certainly aim high." Ruijin replied seriously. "With the new emperor's enthronement, an additional imperial exam has been announced. Those who passed this year's provincial exams are lucky, they don’t have to wait three years but can take the metropolitan exam next year."

Ruili raised an eyebrow. "So you’ve really put thought into this. But if I marry someone from the prefectural city, wouldn’t I have to move far away?"

Ruijin smiled. "Of course, we’d look for someone nearby in Siyang."

"Please, Siyang is a small place, how many talents could there be? It’s nothing compared to the prefectural city." Ruili waved a hand. "I don’t want to get married anyway."

With that, he dashed off, leaving Ruijin sighing.

Ban Yan noticed his young master sitting by the window in a daze despite the pleasant weather.

"Young master, are you wondering if Ji Zhexi passed the exams?"

"Why would I care? His life has nothing to do with mine."

Ban Yan sighed at his stubbornness. "When do you plan to return home?"

"I haven’t had enough fun here yet. What’s the rush?"

Autumn passed in a whirlwind. Ruili, who was initially unfamiliar with Cangzhu, quickly befriended the local young masters with his skills in polo, chuiwan (ancient golf), fishing, and cockfighting. Before long, it was the end of the year.

Winter in Cangzhu was milder than in Siyang, and as Siyang's heavy rains set in, Zhang Fangyuan wrote a letter advising Ruili to stay until spring. Ruili happily complied.

By the time he prepared to leave, he had gained weight, his cheeks rounder. Yet, despite the fun, homesickness crept in.

One day, Ban Yan rushed in with a letter. "Young master, the gatekeeper gave me this. It’s not from Master or Fulang, I wonder who sent it."

Ruili frowned. "Strange, if it were someone from the prefectural city, why send a letter?"

He opened it, scanned the contents, then abruptly snapped it shut.

Ban Yan blinked. "Who’s it from?"

    Without answering, Ruili bolted outside.

He sprinted to the neighboring alley, where a tall scholar stood beneath an overhanging crabapple blossom, as if he’d been waiting for hours.

"I’m heading to the capital for the exams. I came to see you."

Ruili narrowed his eyes. "The road to the capital doesn’t pass through Cangzhu. You’d have to detour two extra days." His heart fluttered, but he scoffed. "Shouldn’t you be harmoniously married to your dear cousin instead of toying with me?"

Ji Zhexi replied calmly, "After my parents died, my aunt took pity on me and planned to arrange a marriage with my cousin after I passed the exams."

The Sweet little Fulang Chapter 160 Part 2

Seeing Shen Xuanqing take two more steps forward, Lu Daxiang shrank back in fear, his last words trembling.

Little brother? Lu Gu wiped his tears, choking back a sob before finding his voice. "What little brother? He’s Lu Wen’s little brother, not mine. You and Du Hehua spoiled him rotten, letting him learn from her to pinch and hit me. Where were you back then?"

Lu Wu was indeed young, not even seven yet. As a son, Lu Daxiang doted on him, naturally indulging him. And because Du Hehua had given birth to a son, securing his lineage, Lu Daxiang treated her well too. Over time, swayed by her whispers, his favoritism shifted entirely to Lu Wen.

Lu Daxiang was momentarily speechless at the question. Finally, he sighed and said, "Xiao Wu’s just a child. He doesn’t know any better. You’re grown up now, why hold a grudge against him?"

Lu Gu’s tears fell again, his lips pressed tightly together. Struggling to steady his breath, he asked, "And when Du Hehua beat and cursed me, where were you then? Now you come asking me to feed you? What kind of logic is that?"

Seeing Lu Gu in tears, Shen Xuanqing’s patience ran out. Before Lu Daxiang could defend himself, Shen Xuanqing spotted the wooden door bolt by the gate, picked it up, and said coldly, "You shameless old fool. Your precious Lu Wen is living it up in town, eating well. If he’s so filial, even his leftovers would be enough for you. Now get lost."

"If you don’t leave, I’ll break your other leg."

Seeing him grab the door bolt, Lu Daxiang nearly collapsed in fear, his voice shrill: "Guzi, are you really going to let him hit your dad?"

"You unfilial bastard, standing by while your father gets beaten!" Suddenly, a figure emerged from behind a large tree on the side path - Du Hehua. Disgusted that Lu Daxiang hadn’t gotten anything and full of contempt for Lu Gu, she screeched, "No wonder you’re a bastard, you don't even care about your own father!"

"Lu Daxiang, I told you long ago, this son was a waste of over a decade of food and money! An ungrateful white eyed wolf, turning his back on us the moment he got ahead. How noble!"

Shen Yaoqing, who had just stepped out, heard her cursing and shouted, "What kind of shrew dares spew filth here?"

Furious, Shen Xuanqing commanded Dahui: "Bite!"

Dahui immediately lunged forward, baring his fangs and sinking them into Lu Daxiang’s calf. As the lead dog, his aggression spurred the other dogs to snarl and charge.

"Ah—!" Du Hehua screamed as the black dog rushed at her, fleeing in panic. Lu Daxiang howled in pain, and soon the cacophony of barks and shouts drew villagers over.

Shen Yaoqing sneered. "Your beloved Lu Wen climbed the social ladder by seducing the wealthy, doing unspeakable things. They say people envy what they lack, you can’t stand Guzi’s decency, so you try to dirty him with your words."

Lu Gu had only ever seen the dogs hunt animals. Seeing them bite people was far more brutal, so he tugged at Shen Xuanqing’s sleeve anxiously.

Understanding without words, Shen Xuanqing whistled, and the four big dogs released their holds but continued baring their teeth, still looking vicious.

Du Hehua, nearly scared out of her wits, could no longer curse. Clutching her leg, she wailed on the ground. Lu Daxiang, surrounded by Dahui and Guaizi, sat frozen, sweat beading on his forehead like soybeans.

A few villagers stood on the side path, including Da Chen and his wife. Seeing the dogs had stopped biting, Dachen called out, "Daqing, what’s going on?"

Shen Yaoqing, quick-witted and unwilling to give anyone ammunition, replied loudly, "Nothing much. Just caught two rabbit thieves. Good thing we have dogs, caught them red-handed."

Lu Gu was stunned for a moment before realizing how clever this excuse was. Otherwise, Du Hehua would’ve surely framed them.

Dachen immediately played along, exclaiming, "How outrageous! Thieves bold enough to strike in broad daylight! Quick, drag them to the magistrate, with so many witnesses, the judge won’t go easy on them!"

Hearing herself labeled a thief, Du Hehua panicked: "Nonsense! We’re not thieves, we came to see someone!"

"You shrew, who are you here to see? Our families have no ties. Admit it, you came to steal!" Shen Yaoqing retorted coldly.

Sensing the situation turning against them, Lu Daxiang cursed at Du Hehua: "Shut your damn mouth and help me up!"

"Dahui, Guaizi." Lu Gu stepped out of the gate, hesitating briefly before calling the dogs back.

Hunting dogs usually only obeyed Shen Xuanqing when attacking prey, but at Lu Gu’s call, they hesitated. Seeing this, Shen Xuanqing whistled, signaling them to return.

Only then did Du Hehua dare approach to help Lu Daxiang up.

Lu Gu looked at them, his expression still grim, his voice slightly nasal. "You sold me off - a death contract, no less. Now I have no father, no stepmother. I severed all ties with your Lu family long ago."

Some things were better ended cleanly.

Having said that, he turned to Shen Xuanqing, unsure how to handle the two intruders.

Shen Xuanqing understood and whispered, "Don’t worry, we won’t actually take them to the authorities. Just a scare. Commoners have never had an easy time filing lawsuits. Without solid evidence, we could get in trouble too. Go inside. Brother and I will handle this and send them away."

Lu Gu hesitated but let Shen Xuanqing guide him back into the house, calling Guaizi to follow. He also scooped up the two puppies that had been "barking" at Lu Daxiang, lest they get trampled if a fight broke out.

Shen Xuanqing exchanged a glance with Da Chen, who caught on and tugged his wife’s sleeve, calling out to the nearby aunties and grannies: "Alright, show’s over! Dogs aren’t biting anymore. Oh, Granny, my mom wanted to borrow a shoe pattern from you yesterday, Xinrui can go with you to get it."

With no onlookers left on the side path and no neighbors interfering, Shen Xuanqing strode forward and blocked Lu Daxiang and Du Hehua’s escape.

His face hardened as he grabbed Lu Daxiang’s collar, dragging him toward the mud wall beside the house, the long door bolt still in his other hand.

The sight made Du Hehua immediately want to scream for help, but Shen Yaoqing, following close behind, threatened, "Scream, and I’ll break your leg too."

For all her shrewishness, Du Hehua was in Qingxi Village territory, just her and Lu Daxiang, with no backup. And since Shen Xuanqing had already broken Lu Daxiang’s leg once, she knew Shen Yaoqing’s threat was real. She didn’t dare make a sound.

Lu Daxiang, shorter than the unusually tall and strong Shen Xuanqing, trembled as he was dragged into the shadows by his collar.

Once they stopped, Shen Yaoqing, bringing up the rear, said coldly, "We let you off before, but since you came asking for trouble today—thieves get their hands chopped off in court."

Du Hehua wanted to argue, but the situation was dire. Her eyes darted around nervously, full of fear and wariness.

Shen Xuanqing said nothing, releasing Lu Daxiang’s collar.

    Then—

A heavy fist slammed into Lu Daxiang’s stomach, doubling him over in pain. Another punch sent his head snapping to the side, blood and saliva spraying as a tooth flew out.

Despite his pitiful state, Shen Xuanqing’s expression remained icy. "Talk, why are you here?"

Rebirth of the Useless Young Master’s Counterattack Chapter 38

Chapter 38: Young Master Mu's Deception

Mu Xiwang coldly rebutted her words, "Having Xiaolin proven as Changnian's child once more would only solidify your position, wouldn't it? After all, the position of the Mu family's matriarch cannot remain vacant."

He knew this woman had long coveted the role of the Mu family's matriarch. The fact that she could endure for over a decade proved just how deep her schemes ran.

"Dad, this isn't about proof, it's about the Mu family's dignity. Where does that leave my face?" Mu Changnian couldn't help but speak up.

He couldn't understand why his father was doing this. If the first test had been unavoidable, this was nothing short of outright humiliation, stripping him of any authority as the family head.

"Which is more important, your face or the purity of the Mu bloodline?" Mu Xiwang's eyes were icy with warning. "I'll say it again, provide the blood samples. Otherwise..." He left the threat hanging.

Bai Ping's face turned deathly pale. She couldn't let Mu Xiwang go through with this, or everything would be ruined. "Dad, the facts were already laid bare before, yet you refuse to believe them. If that's the case, then I..." She abruptly stood and made as if to dash toward a nearby pillar.

"Ah Ping!" Mu Changnian shouted, his eyes filled with panic.

"Go ahead and die. Even if you do, Mu Xiaolin will still be tested," Mu Xiwang said coldly, unmoved by her theatrics.

Bai Ping, who had only intended to feign desperation so someone would stop her, froze mid-step, her face drained of color. Mu Changnian quickly pulled her into his arms.

"Dad, how can you be so heartless? How can you treat them like this? What about me?" Mu Changnian growled, his voice thick with emotion.

The Mu family had always preached that men should never shed tears lightly, yet today, his father had pushed him to this point.

Mu Xiwang's expression darkened further at his protest. "Refusing a second test only proves you have something to hide." His son had always been sharp-witted, how could he be so blind now?

"Dad, it's not that I'm hiding anything. It's just too unreasonable," Bai Ping said with feigned grievance. "I've always been faithful to Changnian. Whether I’ve ever strayed, the master knows full well. When I first entered the Mu family, to prove my innocence, Xiaolin’s paternity was tested. The results were clear, Xiaolin is his son. Why test again now?"

"This isn’t just suspicion, it’s outright distrust, even of the master himself." Her words were clearly meant to sow discord.

Mu Xiwang seethed with anger. This should have been straightforward. He had assumed an open test would be simple, but he hadn’t anticipated this woman’s stubborn resistance.

"Mom, why beg them?" Mu Xiaolin, who had remained silent until now, spoke up hoarsely.

He would remember the Mu family. Even without their protection, he would rise. And when he did, he would make them pay.

"If the Mu family doesn’t want us, we’ll leave." Mu Xiaolin stood from the sofa, his frail frame radiating defiance.

Bai Ping’s face was streaked with tears. "Master... will you really let a descendant of the Mu family be cast out?" Her voice trembled, Xiaolin was still in danger.

"Dad!" Mu Changnian’s voice was laced with fury.

At that moment, Mu Lichuan entered. Seeing the situation, he knew things hadn’t gone smoothly, and that his grandfather hadn’t punished him.

Perhaps in his grandfather’s eyes, the entire Mu family was under his control. Forcing his father and Mu Xiaolin to take another test should have been simple. But Bai Ping was no pushover, she wouldn’t have endured this long otherwise.

"Lichuan, talk some sense into your grandfather. He’s about to humiliate the Mu family again!" Mu Changnian’s face flushed when he saw Mu Lichuan.

He knew his father favored Lichuan. Bai Ping, meanwhile, bit her lip silently, she was convinced this was all Mu Lichuan’s doing.

"Lichuan, stay out of this. The Mu bloodline must not be tainted," Mu Xiwang said sternly before Mu Lichuan could speak.

He hadn’t wanted the boy involved, yet here he was. Glancing at the time, he sighed, things had already been delayed.

"Mu Lichuan! First, you made Xiaolin and your father take a paternity test. Now you’ve dragged your grandfather into it? Do you reject the previous results?" Bai Ping’s eyes burned with quiet fury.

Mu Lichuan’s expression remained indifferent as he looked at his father. "Dad, if it’s just a retest, why refuse?"

"And Aunt Bai, if you’re truly innocent, why fear it? As for the Mu family’s dignity, wasn’t the first test done in secret? Who even knew about it?"

They kept harping about "the Mu family’s dignity," oblivious that the real shame lay in their own actions, not the results.

Silence fell after his words. Mu Xiaolin gritted his teeth. "Mom, the Mu family doesn’t respect us. They don’t see us as family. Let’s leave!" He couldn’t understand why his mother clung to this place. Wasn’t their pride worth more?

Once mocked as a bastard, he had finally gained a father - only to be bullied by this half-brother, who schemed relentlessly to drive him out.

He knew Mu Lichuan was behind it all but lacked proof. The man pretended kindness, only to turn vicious the next moment. How could such a hypocrite be so beloved?

Bai Ping steeled herself and pulled away from Mu Changnian. "Master, I’ve failed you. Before, though life was hard for us, we managed. At least we weren’t forced into a corner like this. Xiaolin and I will leave. Perhaps returning was a mistake." She wasn’t a fool, fighting Mu Xiwang was futile.

"Then I’ll leave with you!" Mu Changnian declared. Bai Ping was the only one who understood him, the rest of the Mu family treated him as a pawn.

Mu Xiwang’s aura turned glacial. "Mu Changnian, do you think the Mu family is a place you can just walk away from?" He knew Mu Xiaolin’s unusual constitution. If released, the consequences for the mortal world could be catastrophic.

"Dad, what do you want?" Mu Changnian was baffled. His father insisted on another test, yet now refused to let them leave.

He managed all the Mu family’s worldly affairs. If he left, chaos would ensue. Even if Mu Lichuan was capable, he couldn’t stabilize the family’s industries overnight.

"That boy carries an ominous energy. He cannot leave the Mu family," Mu Xiwang said sharply.

"Just because you’re the Mu family? Just because you rule this city, you think you can imprison us?" Bai Ping had never imagined their confinement was due to the dark energy around her son. Hatred swelled in her chest.

"We have our freedom!" she spat. They had sought the Mu family’s protection, only to find themselves trapped in a den of tigers.

Mu Xiwang pressed his lips together. Mu Lichuan spoke calmly, "Aunt Bai, you misunderstand Grandfather. He means that the energy around Xiaolin is dangerous - it could harm others, even turn him into a weapon."

The moment these words left his mouth, Bai Ping’s expression changed. "Lies! That energy would never hurt Xiaolin!" she cried.

The man who had given it to them had said it would protect Xiaolin in times of danger. How could Mu Lichuan claim it was a threat?

"Aunt Bai, why would I lie? You saw what happened when Xiaolin lost control before. If not for you snapping him out of it, he might have slaughtered everyone. Isn’t that harm?" Mu Lichuan thought this should have been handled discreetly. Announcing it like this only gave them time to prepare.

He didn’t know who stood behind Mu Xiaolin, but they had to be a powerful cultivator - how else had Mu Xiaolin grown so strong so quickly in his past life?

From his great-grandfather’s records, he knew that without his own fortuitous encounters, he wouldn’t have reached Foundation Establishment so soon. Cultivation depended on opportunity, even geniuses could perish prematurely.

Though cultivators were rare on their planet and spiritual energy was sparse, other worlds teemed with them. A Foundation Establishment cultivator like him would be considered bottom-tier elsewhere.

"Y-you’re lying! It’s impossible..." Bai Ping’s face paled with fear as she recalled that incident. "Xiaolin didn’t hurt me!"
